Noble01: The One They're Afraid to Start

Now don't be dissing us rookies... I for one plan to play this baby out. Especially since I basically won the entire game on my first 30 turns so actually, no need for anyone else to play, we are the victors.

OK seriously, I got the file and played my turns and I just want to upload a test image here to see how this looks....ok it works

Wow, three in a row and not a single scrap of useful information. Only kidding. I haven't written anything useful in 16 games.

And pholk, can I be dumb cop?

Hey guys can I be the guy who shows up with the briefcase full of needles/saws/and surgical tools. Remember the dentist in "marathon man".

4000 BC
Mecca founded on spot. There's a hut NE of the city, and we've got another coast to the west, so we're going to expand NE I presume. Set citizen to work NE spices for extra gold to go for founding of Buddhism. Warrior begins exploring. Duh.

3800 BC
So we've got 3 coasts already in view and 2 goodie huts ripe for the picking. I spot crab and cow, what we like to call Surf 'n Turf.... After expansion, set Mecca to work newly available NE flood plains/desert for more growth + extra gold

3720
Rocks found north of Mecca! We don't know what to do with them yet, but our people will figure out something, right...?

Sorry I forgot to turn on the resource indicator in this shot but I will have a better picture coming up. What can I say, rookie mistakes...

3680
Gold found in the first hut

3640
OK so we found Buddhism - do we believe? yes, we believe.... we're spiritual so switch right away. I set research to Poly.

Here is my first real doubt, hope this works out, trying to found 2 quick religions...I think this was mentioned as a strategy?? Now, I've set the 2nd citizen to work another flood plains/desert and queued up a third warrior (2 exploring, one to the north, one to the south) while we quickly grow to size 3 in Mighty Mecca, going for a third gold coin and more research.

3520
warriors get a map in the NE and get more gold from that other hut in the SW

3480
Still not a critter, barb or Civ in sight... are we alone in this world? With whom can we share the faith? Spoke too soon: lion appears from the mist next turn and kicks our ass... buh bye warrior. damn that sucks!

More people are born in Mecca, so we are researching a bit faster toward Poly, and our replacement warrior will come sooner

3400 - greetings Elizabeth of England... Philosphical and Financial - correct me if I'm wrong, but she could be tough to keep up with

3360 - A scout from Russia greets us immediately after Elizabeth's warrior... Cathy is Financial and Creative

3320 - Poly coming in 2 turns!! Can ... we ... make it ....

3240 - We get Poly and found a second religion. Set research to Masonry - we need to get that stone to the north hooked up with our second city, I figured. Plus, it puts us on the path to Judaism for the "Hydra" theory that I keep reading about. Something to do with lots of money later, it's all very technical ... you guys can explain it or call me crazy.
Also, started on a worker in Mecca... yes, finally.

I'm sending a new warrior to venture down south again where that lion ate us for dinner. I will circle back with the warrior that's exploring up north to cover Mecca, after exploring just a few more tiles...

The Hydra theory relates to founding multiple religions. If you later in the game get any Great Prophets (from building wonders like the Oracle or employing specialists after building a temple) you can build the shrine for that religion. Each shrine gives you +1gpt for each city that religion is in. If you have a market, groce and bank in that city it goes up to +2gpt. You can really rake in the cash this way!

3080 - Kill that lion for revenge and experience, but mostly for revenge.

2920 - OK, so we get masonry and I set research to mining in only 5 turns, not Monotheism. Right call? I figure we will want to get some mine action going on those hills and we can afford a few more turns in the chance that no one will have Monotheism by then? I really suck at this game, right?

2880 - Great, another ass-kicking by a lion and with a goodie hut right there for the taking! Sorry dudes....

2840 - Worker completes in Mecca, so our settler is on deck and I think should head for the spot I've marked because it will have the stone and some extra food resources. It's not on a river or coast, I realize. In fact, the river out of Mecca flows directly north into an area that I think is pretty devoid of good stuff, so see what you think.

Worker will start on a road for the corn, that's about all he can do for the moment. You see our one and only warrior just outside the city gates. He's lonely after 2 of his comrades have fallen to lions. By the way, I didn't spot a Barb anywhere in my 30 turns, what's up with that?

2800 - Check it out, No. 1 in score on Prince level... yeah baby! Oh it's only the end of the first quarter, eh? and there are other Civs out there to meet? details, details...

Alright I'm done with my first-ever post of a game. We're religious, we're very weak, we have rich neighbors, and we're researching mining and then possibly going for the Trifecta in religion if anyone wants to try it. Oh and along the way we need to learn the secrets of Agriculture, Pottery, Animal Husbandry... well, you know the rest. :)

So enjoy whoever is up next and tell me what I did wrong.... oh, and fix everything I broke, while you're at it.

You did fine llamacat. Founding two religions is good for the cash later and culture in the start. You need to expand now and I see that you have started a settler. I would also recommend going for bronze working soon to see where the copper is. Since you have stone I would settle near there next and think about going for the Pyramids.

After BW maybe think about going for masonry/monotheism. If you don't have copper in your fatcross at least you will know where it is plus the slavery can be a help for pop rushing.

One other thing if you don't have copper in the fatcross you might consider archery if you don't have it already just in case. I don't remember how bad barbs can be on prince but still can be a nuisance and with warriors defense might not be sufficient. At least on prince barb axes shouldn't be showing up too soon.

Good turns, llamacat!

Got it, but won't play until tonight or tomorrow morning.

In the meantime, lets get some disucussion startet... :)

What to research next? IMHO getting a third reli would be good, finding copper/horses/hooking up the corn even better. Thus I'd go for
(Mining)->BW->Agriculture->AH
This way, Copper would be visible just when the Settler is ready. We could also try to found Judaims in our second city by going
(Mining)-> 4-5 turns BW -> Mono -> Agriculture -> AH
but I'm not sure about delaying Mecca's improvements to much (we don't even have Pottery!)

Next question: buildorder.
If we take the first path, I'd vote for
(Settler (16)) -> Warrior (4) -> Worker -> ...
Otherwise
(Settler (16)) -> Warrior (4) -> Warrior -> Settler -> ...

Btw, at llama's proposed settling point, those stones wouldn't be in the BFC, thus requiring a second border pop (=150? culture) before we could work them. I suggest founding instead NW-4N of Medina (sorry, no pictures here).
The city would get 3 floodplanes, 2 grasslands, rest plains/hills and could (by farming the former) become a decent production city.

What do you guys think?

edit: Ah, forget something... Is it usual to press enter on my last turn, or not? And how can I find out, how many turns have been played/are still to play till 2050?

Good exploring, good! Exceeds my expectations.

I personally think founding 2 religions is overkill :D Hydra strategy is kinda useless on the higher difficulties.

Anyway, for settttttttling, I'd put my second city one tile west of the cow.

Stone is great, but I'd rather have a productive city at this point than one that picks a strategic resource but on poor land. We'll have to do without stone. But we will try to build one wonder. Focus. Breathe deep. Is the Pyramids OK?

Cheron: Go with that build order. :D

Cheron; bear in mind that you're likely to have barb activity before the end of your set.

@GreyFox: Thanks :)

@RKai re:city placement: I think, i will play 16 turns now (until BW comes in) and then report back and await a team-decision before playing my last 4 turns and settling.

re:build order: which one? :D I suggested 2 alternatives...

@Ozbenno: Jep, this would be my favourite variant. However, this will have to be decided by one of my successors... :)

Playing now.
