Non-Midas With A Vengeance - The Conquests Rematch

hehe, tomorrow's fine Meli :)

On a side issue, Meli: my application to hattrick got rejected :(

OK,

I have played up to Turn 8 of my ten.

The question I have to ask is...

What should I do with a Scientific Great Leader?

We obviously got to Music Theory first, and I have traded my way to tech parity with most except India and Persia who are both up Banking and Metallurgy. And Russia who have the same but just got Physics.

Here is the save.

THE SAVE - Turn 8

Glad to know the MT gambit worked.

IMHO, for whatever we should use, maybe we should not use it for boosting science. That darn thing does not work!

Maybe it works in 1.15. But in my experience it did not make any difference in science in my test games.

So I would suggest we build JSBach. I know in archi maps it is of limited use. That will help us in reducing our lux tax a bit. That will help us in our science research, which it seems we will be doing quite a lot.

Other thing I thought of is maybe keep it until we get to ToG and then rush Newtons...

Could someone check with that SAVE using the SGL to boost science and see what difference it makes?

Melifluous

Come on guys I need more input, I plan to play the final 2 turns in about an hour ;)

Betazed is right about the SGL science boost bug. I had it once in a SP and again yesterday in a RBC6 replay. Both times: no real science boost.

We can keep the SGL. You can have more of them at the same time. Copernicus or Newton would be a VERY useful wonder in our science cities. But then please rush it in the city with the highest potential for science :)

Since Sg's are so valuable now, I would say let's save it. We may get Newtons. Or if not that if are extremely lucky we may get ToE. In any case our chances of getting another SL is slim since our getting to any tech before the other AI's is slim.

So let's just save it and see what we can use it for later.

@betazed: we may get a SGL with the free techs from ToE :) Yesterday I got a SGL for the free tech Map Making after researching Philosophy :hammer:

EDIT: when the AI gets into Fascism or Communism, we will be able to research techs at first again :)

really, :) I did not know that. That must have been nice. Lots of new things to learn in Conquest!

I can't believe we are still keeping up in tech at this stage of the game! Way to go...also, Meli, when you next play, could you please post a screenie of the SGL? I ain't seen one yet!

I think definitely hold on for a wonder, either Newton's or TofE would be good.

Preturn - Little bit of micro to ensure some things finish a bit quicker, emphasise switched to shields rather than food whilst we are still in our golden age.

Turn 01 ( 460AD) - University -> Knight. Adrianople University -> trebuchet. Chalcedon Courthouse -> Dromon. Lots of Micro. Drop science to 50% and trade Theology and 24gpt to Spain for Gunpowder. Could have traded Gunpowder from Incans for Silks, incense, Education and 9gpt, but dont wanna risk the lux trade whilst at war... We have 2 saltpeter already connected...

IT - India declares war on the germans, nice ;) Persians build Sistine, Russians build copernicus.

Turn 02 ( 470AD) - Adrianople trebuchet -> Knight. We do a straight trade Printing Press for Education with the Spaniards. The Germans dont know the Arabs yet :p But they want 67gpt, contact with Arabs and Printing Press for Gunpowder. Er no I dont think so. Trade Incence, Saltpeter, 45gpt and 3 gold to persia for Astronomy. Trade Astronomy and Printing Press to germany for Chemistry. Research to 30%. Straight Dyes for Silk trade with spain. Lux to 0%, 2 cities need entertainers but build temples very soon. Wow what a turn. Music Theory in 5 turns at 40% now doing +5gpt. Persians and Russians are up Metalurgy on us. Everyone else at tech parity except Spain and Incans who are about 3-4 techs back at least.

Turn 03 ( 480AD) - Trebizond Aqueduct -> Temple. Dyrrachium temple -> Barracks. Gift Cathy 4 gold.

IT - Gandhi finally kicks our troops from his waters...

Turn 04 ( 490AD) - Constantinople Knight -> knight. Adrianople Knight -> knight. Caesarea Uni -> harbour. Nicaea Temple -> harbour. Varna Temple -> Marketplace. Sardica Courthouse -> harbour. Septum marketplace -> University. Gift Cathy 4 gold.

Turn 05 ( 500AD) - Indians and Russians now have banking. India wants 108gpt for it... Maybe not. Gift the Incans 6 gold.

IT - Golden Age ends  Cash at -53 gpt. We lose a worker :(
Turn 06 ( 510AD) - Drop research to 20%, Music Theory in 2 turns at +8gpt.

Turn 07 ( 520AD) - Adrianople Knight -> Knight. Caesarea Harbour -> Knight. Russians now have Physics. In fact a bit of looking around shows that Russia and Persia both have Mil. Trad as we are scared of both their cavalry and cossacks. The other tech leader India still only has Elephants.

Turn 08 ( 530AD) - We research Music Theory and Get A Scientific Great Leader! Constantinople Knight -> Knight. Nicaea -> Harbour -> Granary. Sardica harbour -> barracks. SGL goes to sleep in Constantinople. We could make friends with the Arabs, but seeing as they dont even have Republic yet or any MA techs I decline. 5 Gold gift to Cathy.

Turn 09 ( 540AD) - Trebizond temple -> barracks. Dyrrachium barracks -> granary. Build an Outpost on the German border. Buy Metallurgy from Russia for Music Theory, 23 gpt and 9 gold. Unsure as to what to research I set it to 0% (everyone has everything we could research). At least we can upgrade some Trebuchet. I hope. Anyway sell Music Theory around as Russia will if we dont. We get 19gpt from Germany  Research to 20% then. Banking in 20 turns. Gift Incans 15 gold.

Turn 10 ( 550AD) - Adrianople Knight -> Cannon. Spain has Banking! Trade Banking for Metallurgy.

Next !!!

Melifluous

PS. Nad please change the TECH!!
PPS. Also can I advise that we build some caravals and invade the Arabians? Free land going begging here as they still have no MA techs.

THE SAVE

Great turn Meli :hammer: And I agree with you: the Arabs have great land -ehm tundra- with a couple of real gems. For example: Khurasa has gems, Medina and Kufah have furs.

OTOH: I'd like to see us building libraries, universites and banks as well. We are scientific but only 5th in literacy :(

EDIT: am I still up or an you take it Nad?

Indeed I have been building Uni's and Libraries...

However harbours, barracks and granaries have been made a slightly higher priority in the few scary cities I have found without :o

Anyways lemme summarise.

We are paying out about 100 gpt atm for past deals...

We are ahead of the Incans and Arabs (the arabs still have spearmen  )

the rest we have parity except Russia, Persia and India (some of which we have gpt deals with)

We rock...

It ain't just deity. It's a deity variant! And it's meant to be a tough one (remember the first game?!) I can't put my finger on why this one is going so smoothly compared to the first. Can it all be down to the start position and having a 4-turn settler factory available?

Anyway, if I regain Civ-access tomorrow I'll play, otherwise I'll post so Aggie can take it.

For the early game, our strong start combined with the fact that we were seafaring (was anyone else?) allowed us to power through the Ancient Age when many deity games fall behind. Keeping up was trivial!

Since we got techs earlier and had strong cities we were able to get our economy up and running, earlier and stronger. The variant actually forces us to research, which can be bad if we were weak, but is powerful when we are strong enough.

So I would say it was a combination of the 4 turn settler factory at the start, being seafaring, and having sufficient land to settle in without competition (to actually take advantage of the settler factory).

Okay, I can't play til 2moro at the earliest, so Aggie, if you can play before then then please take it :)
