Non-Midas With A Vengeance - The Conquests Rematch

NMT2
1: We're in a negative. I have to kick science back so we dont loose anything. 2 turns hopefully wont hurt us too much.
2: More stuff is built. I give X and Ghandi till T5 to find a galley to Dromonize then I'll declare peace. Palace is expanded. I knock Sci back to 40 for a -3gpt deficit. I'll play with it until we get the tech.
3: More. Ancyra is built below Nassius.
4: ZZZ. Varna riots, I hire entertainer.
5: ZZZ. Varna comes to peace. I dont see the point of continuning these wars, but Ghandi and X wont budge on favorable non tech related terms. So, I look to become a pirate.
6: Yar, Matey! Persian Ships ahoy! Vet Dromon vs Reg Persian Galley. Looses.... :GAHHH!!!:
7: Feud is finally researched. I start on theology. 5g to the still Ancient Age Abu. X will do peace for peace. I accept (I want this over!) Ghandi, however, wont do it without tech, so I say no.
8: ZZZ.
9: I start a cathedral in Const., possibly as a prebuild.
10: ZZZ

That wraps it up here. Theo. in 16, keep gifting stuff and see if India will do anything. If not, there is a Dromon near China that we could get to Indian shores.

I must admit, taking the opportunity with Germany at war with other civs is hard to resist. Still, let's not get carried away...we'll be facing knights, maybe even muskets, so we'll need a big force of MDI backed by pikes and horses to do it. And whatever we do, we MUST NOT destroy our rep! There is still a long way to go in this game, so checking for ongoing deals and for possible impact on trade routes is imperative before launching an attack.

All things considered, I'd be patient at this stage. With no other civs on our continent, Germany's present wars are all phoney...if we were to declare on them , we would face the brunt of their deity forces...not a pleasant thought. We're doing well so far, let's not throw it away.

Please everyone, prioritize the FP!!! It's already 260AD and we're still 28 turns from completion. From the screenshot above workers seem to be improving 3rd ring tundra tiles and 2nd ring desert tiles! Please can we spare a worker or two to attend to Trebizond, specifically it's iron hill? :) There's a potential 2 shields a turn being wasted from that tile. In fact, with the floodplains producing 4 food a turn each Trebizond should be able to work other hills and mountains as well.

Let's please build up infrastructure first. We still haven't finished markets in a lot of cities. We indeed have a lot of horses, but the fact that we can't have a lot of cash makes it almost impossible to upgrade them in time.

We have a healthy core. We can in theory wait a long while before we are going to invade. I believe the space is the prefered victory type (right?). That also doesn't require our attack.

Futhermore: let's use the money we make for rushing things as much as possible, rather than giving it away. We could also use it to investigate cities. War away cities from empires also show the amount of money they have and other useful stuff.

I got it and will play tonight.

I will definitely investigate invading Germany. If I do, I think I would start the war by playing defensive until the main unit rush ends, rather than going on the offensive right away. I would want some Cats/Trebuchets to weaken incoming knights. I will work toward this, but won't declare war unless I feel ready for it.

If this was a single player game, I would wake workers to send them to the FP in a profligate waste of worker turns under the theory that the fringe city benfits are small compared to the FP, and therefore wasting the turns are worth it. I am curious on what others think on this. Perhaps a more efficient worker mosey toward the FP would be better?

Greebley: I woudn't do a colossal worker migration, that would be, as you say, a waste of worker turns. I would do a partial migration. From the screenshot Elvis posted, there are at least 5 workers within 1-2 turn movement range of the FP city (that's assuming the workers aren't stacked, if they are stacked, there's even more). I would get those to the FP city ASAP and start improving tiles one at a time, using the workers as a stack. The frustrating thing is that with a group of 6 workers (say), the FP city could be improved fully in 7-8 turns, and the sooner the FP is built the greater the benefit we will receive for the rest of the game; ideally we should already have prioritized the FP city and I did mention it in my turn report. Now we're making up for lost time, so, in answer to your question, my choice would be to move the workers close to Trebizond to improve the city but leave those in the far south, for example, they'll take too long to get there.

Preturn: I do some minor MM'ing. For example, Trebizond is max size and doesn't need the floodplains, so Nicea gets them for faster growth. Also switch Constanople and Adianople to worker for a turn. They both have tons of extra food and an empty shield box, so making workers now and then when at max size seems reasonable.

If we could afford invention we could do a 2-fer, but we can't. I leave science high - maybe we will get Theology before everone else has it.

Side note: I notice we are mining tundra. Once we have engineering we can plant forests which are an extra shield. The only reason there is to mine tundra is to keep track of which ones have had forest chops. Hopefully, this is not the reason for the mines as I am going abort them (and maybe plant some forests if there are not enough already). Sorry if I am messing up someones calculations.

IBT: No Indian ships yet.
Constantanople: Worker->Pike
Adrianople: Worker->Pike

280 AD: Hmm... looking for a way between China and America... First way blocked. I amy have to go all the way around.

IBT:
Chalcedon: Worker->Library

290 AD: Find a way thru with an Indian Galley in the gap. It will get first attack (if it wants) which is too bad.

IBT: Indian Galley advances and then flees.
Constantanople: Pike->Pike
Adianople: Pike->MDI (MM'd town to 20 shields).
Dyrrachium: Worker->Trebuchet
Nicomedia: Library->Harbor
Ancyra: Worker->Harbor

Berlin finishes Leo's Workshop.

300 AD: Attack the Indian gally and win. We enter our golden age!
Sign peace with the indians giving them Engineering for Chivalry and 16 gold.
Reverse WW affects us a little bit.
Lots of MM to match the GA. Get Constantanople up to 30 shields so it can build a Pike or Trebuchet a turn.
Also switch Adrianople to a Courthouse to see if I can get it to 35 (knight every 2 turns).

Give Inca 6 gold before I remember I was planning on spending it to rush things instead. Next time. Short rushing (where you switch to something else, rush and then switch back is something I have never tried before and this game seems suited to it.

Gold at +20 (so 30 to spend on an upgrade of a spear) Theology in 4.

IBT: We are told to leave indian waters.
Constantanople: Pike->Trebuchet (think I will alternate between the 2).
Nicea: Pike->Courthouse
Varna: Library->Courthouse
Heraclea: Library->Courthouse

310 AD: More MM - play games to get theology in 2 rather than 3. It means short term taxmen in the more corrupt cities - the 10 gold limit means there is much more opportunities for this kind of MM (normally you would have enough gold to cover a two turn shortfall.

Upgrade Spear->Pike

IBT:
Constantanople: Trebuchet->Pike

320 AD: I can lower science so I eleminate the now spurious tax collectors.

IBT: Promise we will leave Spanish waters any day now.
Learn theology. Start Education (may switch it).
Constantanople: Pike->Trebuchet
Adrianople: Courthouse->Knight
Naissus: Library->Aquaduct

Darn it, someone else learned theology the exact same turn! We probably learned it at first cost, reduced the cost so an AI got it and immediately traded it to everyone.

Hmm... it is going to be hard to upgrade any horses. we need 110 gpt to reach the 120 needed on any turn. At 0 science we are 105 (but we have 20% lux due to FP city).

Adrianople misses 35 shields by 1. I thought it would make it, but the last shield was a corrupt one :( Need to finish mining the mountain. I will send in help...

Adrianople switch to a worker in the interrum. Constantanople is also growing so I do the same.
Switch Dyrrachium to an Aquaduct.

I also consider buying Invention, but do not.

IBT:
Constantanople: Worker->Trebuchet
Adrianople: Worker->Pike

340 AD: Switch Septum to a courthouse.

IBT:
Constantanople: Trebuchet->Pike
Adrianople: Pike->Knight (in 3 for the first knight)
Sardica: Library->Courthouse
Caesarea: Market->Knight
Chalcedon: LIbrary->Courthouse

350 AD: Final check of the cities.

Notes:
Adrianople is one shield short of a knight every two turns. It seemed that every nearby worker finished at once so I put them all in a stack on the mountain. Once they finish, then feel free to re-scatter them about again. I think if all the workers mine, then it should be done in "1 turn" next turn. If this means the 2 shields are applied right away, then there will be 34 shields this turn and 36 the next and you get the knight in 2 instead of 3. I am not positive if this all works, but I think it does.

As I see it we have several options:
Buy Invention and lower science.
Continue to research Education.
Switch to Printing Press.
Try to get to 120 gpt to upgrade our 14 odd horses.
Upgrade some of the other units we have lolling about (and move them German-ward).

We have:
26 workers
8 warrior
1 archer
7 spear
6 sword
14 horse
11 pike
2 Trebuchets
no knights (yet)

We are also spending 106 gpt on units so simply disbanding the warriors and regular spear might not be a bad idea - actually we could easily reach the 120 gpt with disbanding lesser units. I think this may be the best way to do things. +14 knights or so would be nice, and worth a few regular warriors :lol:

Boy we have a lot of regular units....

Forbidden palace is in 6 turns. I am building a court house or two. Check if they are really needed when the FP finishes.

I am stopping here to even out the years. That way we will go 350-450-550-etc. which is easier for me to remember.

I'd like to see us going for Education and build cheap unviversities. I'm also a big fan of Copernicus and Newton. My two cents: when we are tech frontunners, it will be easier to get gpt and then we are less dependend on cash.

Good idea!

pre turn : disband a few regular warriors. allows me to increase science. Education now due in 11. killing every warrior increased earnings by 2. I thought the cost to maintain was 1G. is this a feature or bug? :confused:

IBT: germany and spain sign PT.

380 AD:

IBT: Russia demands incense. I cave. If I don't she will declare war and drag germany into it. And I do not think we are ready to go to war against germany yet.

400 AD:

IBT: Inca demands incense. COme on! Is this a joke? Frustrated I tell him to

take a hike and be backs down.

410 AD: India demands the 7G that we have in our treasury. I give it to him. Izzy demands Theology. Yea right! She backs down.

420 AD: Gandhi and Cathy has edcation now.

430 : Russsians are building Copernicus! :eek:

440 AD: We get Education. Trade it to persia for Invention and a lux. That allows us to reduce lux one notch. I start Music Theory. Due in 7 turns. If we can get it before others then we can trade it for good.With Uni due in 2 we should get it earlier.

450 AD: Germany has gunpowder but not education. But he will not trade it.

Here is the save.
