Non-Midas With A Vengeance - The Conquests Rematch

I'm using standard windows extraction, but as I say, some files I can extract immediately.

I too have this problem fairly often when I use windows extraction...

All I can say is that WinZip always finds the contents whereas windows does sometimes...

I'll hunt around and see what I can find out about this.

Hi guys,

I've had stuff come up at work ( a promotion actually :D ;) ) which means I'm going to be extremely busy rest of this week and won't be able to play until the weekend. So if Aggie can and wishes to play before Saturday we can swop in the roster again? What do you think, Aggie?

IHT: I move all the workers away from the coast. We have 31 cavs. That appears to be enough, so I switch most cav building cities to Hospitals or Stock Exchanges.

I plan to take the rubber city Smolensk and make peace with Russia after 9 turns.

Research to 90%. Radio still in 3.

IT: Russia wants a MPP. I do not.

Trebizond: Bank->Stock Exchange. Iconium: library->harbor.

We are called the most powerful nation of the world :hammer: Russia is 6th :lol:

Turn 1 (1160 AD) I renew the deal with Persia: Incense and Silks for Ivory, world map, 100 gold. Cannon upgraded to artillery for 120 gold. Science to 80%, radio in 2 (205 gpt). Library rushed in Ohrid for 120 gold.

IT: Ohrid: library->worker. Adrianople: hospital->stock exchange.

Turn 2 (1170 AD) Artillery upgraded for 120 gold.

IT: Spain and Russia sign a MA vs Persia. Spain destroyed the Inca. Persia and Arabia sign MPP.

We discover Radio and start on Combustion.
Heralcea: university->bank. Trebizond: stocvk exchange->hospital. Nicomedia: factory->university. Ancyra: barracks->marketplace.

Turn 3 (1180 AD) No-one has any tech over us :eek:

-I sell Radio to Spain for 398 gpt and 228 gold
-I sell Radio to Persia for 1417 gold and 29 gpt

Factory rushed in Septum, Nicaea. 2 cannons upgraded. Several pikes upgraded to rifles.

IT: Caesara: stock exchange->hospital. Nicaea: factory->bank. Basra: worker->worker. Dyrrachium: university->bank. Septum: factory->stock exchange.

Turn 4 (1190 AD) Several buildings rushed.

IT: Persia and Russia signed peace :nono:

Adrianople: stock exchange->police station. Nicomedia: university->bank. Iconium: harbor->courthouse.

Arabia chooses to be the next victim of Spain. They declare war on them.

Turn 5 (1200 AD) Troops unloaded near Smolensk. They have infantry and German ships also sail around the city.

IT: Prileb: barracks->courthouse. Trebizond: hospital->barracks. Amorium: university->bank.

Turn 6 (1210 AD)

-Artillery takes two hitpoints from a vet infantry in Smolensk. Another infantry with four hitpointds appears.
-Vet cavalry retreats vs an elite infantry that keeps four hitponts
-Vet cavalry redlines this infantry and is killed
-Vet vavalry redlines the other infantry and is killed. A cossack appears.
-Elite cavalry kills the cossack without being hurt.
-Vet cavalry kills a redlined infantry without being hurt.
-Redlined infatry kills vet cavalry.
-Vet cavalry kills redlined infantry. A wounded coassack appears.
-Vet cavalry kills wounded coassack and we take Smolensk. But the rubber is now in German territory :(

A library in Smolensk is ordered.

IT: Constantinople: Military Aceademy->Hospital. Smyrna: factory->university. Heraclea: bank->stock exchange. Trebizond: barracks->artillery. Chalcedon: bank->stock exchange.

Turn 7 (1220 AD) Library rushed in Smolensk. I accidently drafted a unit in Chalcedon :o

Combustion is in 5 and no-one has it yet!

IT: Adrianople: Police Station->artillery. Caesarea: hospital->artillery. Nicaea: bank->stock exchange. Smolensk: library->temple.

Turn 8 (1230 AD) I cancel a couple of alliances. Only the one with India is still running for a turn.

IT: Germany and Persia sign a MPP. Germany declares war on Spain.

Smyrna: university->bank. Trebizond: artillery->artillery. Vidin: courthouse->library.

Persia declares war on Russia.

Turn 9 (1240 AD) I cancel the last alliance vs Russia (with India). I make peace with Russia for 150 gold. They have nothing else to offer.

Temple rushed in Smolensk, amongst others.

IT: Constantinople: hospital->army. Dyrrachium, Nicomedia: bank->hospital, stock exchange. Smolensk: temple->barracks. The borders expand and rubber is now ours :) We lack the workers to connect it though :(

Science to 90%. We will have Combustion in two. Amazingly, the AI doesn't have it yet. This makes one thing obvious to me: we should continue self research. I also think that we don't need to start a was unless we lack resources and trade is out of the question. We have a galleon just north of Sardica with 4 workers. They should go to Smolensk to connect the rubber.

1250 AD save

Nice work on getting the rubber, though I see what you mean about needing workers.

Germany doesn't seem to have rubber either, so presumably doesn't yet guard his towns with infantry. Would a war be worthwhile?

One MM note: Trebizond is just below the number of shields needed to build a artillery every round. Move a single citizen to a hill and we get the artillery twice as fast.

Hmm... you are probably right - they have an MPP with Persia, who is supplying gold and Lux to us. We also are "weak" compared to them militarily, so it may not be an easy war.

My original thinking was that if we took out the rubber island (that stack of Cav looks big enough to do so), we could get the rubber sooner by capturing Bremen (I see at least one worker on the island) and it is only 1 square to connect. Also Germany's southern cities would be productive for us, and they have Leo's if we took Berlin.

One other thought - we can clear that swamp square in the N of our lands and build a city there. We "steal" Germany's oil if we do this without war.

I think I'm up, but I need a skip. There's a 32 inch TV in my basement that can't hook itself up. I'll be knee deep in speaker wires until at least monday. Just go over me for now.

Thanks.

Got it (and have extracted the save from the zip with no problems :) ).

I think I agree with Aggie's assessment of how to play it now. Killing the Germans would be nice but there's no need for it. Instead, with all the MPPs and wars flying about, we can calmly cruise through the tech tree while everyone else pounds each other. However, in saying this we must make sure we have a good military on hand and keep border areas strongly fortified, to prevent any AI from getting any funny ideas.

Going to play today.

NMTWAV, Inherited turn 1250AD

Just as a point of interest, the very first thing I noticed when I opened the save is that the Germans have oil :eek: I sure hope that proves to be an irrelevance!

As we are no longer at war there is no need to fortify the coast. Instead I moved troops to border cities; Nicaea and Smyrna on our home continent, in particular, are defended by cutouts and would surely fall if the Germans betrayed us.

Not sure why our workers are fortified and watching the fun. I lash them back into action :whip: There is a lot to be done. Some tiles are still not improved and with hospitals and cities maxing out, there is a lot to be done to maximize food and shields.

Cities are looking good, not that much left to build, and mm is pretty good. I swapped a few tiles around so that cities closer to the capital get as many tiles as possible, and other cities get the rest.

I'm amazed and impressed by the difference the new corruption settings make in 1.15beta. Smolensk, for example, would have been very corrupt in PTW, yet here with a courthouse it contributes 3 beakers a turn to science at size 1 :goodjob: Similarly the ex-Arabian cities are not a total loss, and can be made useful with some work. All-in-all I think this is a positive step made by Firaxis.

Did a bit of trading on the inherited turn: sold radio to India for wm, 108g + 111gpt. Sold furs to Spain for wm, 130 + 16gpt. Spain is at war with 3 civs and could use a little help. Ideally we want a stalemate to develop in the world wars, so the AIs continue to waste resouces without any one becoming very powerful. Used gold for some partial rushing.

IT: Spain demands our 6g :crazyeye: I would tell Isabella to stuff it but the demand is so pathetic that I'm not going to give her an excuse to get out of the hundreds of gpt payments she is making to us. Given, with a laugh and a shake of the head :D

A German worker moves onto our rubber at Smolensk...is he going to hook it up for us?

Early

Lots of worker tasks. The German worker did not connect our rubber for us (boo!). Persia and India obtained ironclads (the tech) in 1255AD. We obtained combustion in 1260AD, and started on mass production. I decided NOT to sell combustion around, since now is a good time to pull away from the chasing pack, and we don't need the gpt anyway at the moment, In fact, every turn I had 600 or so gold to use on rushes or upgrades since we're making that much even at 100% science.

Renegotiated the lux deal with Spain, we're now giving incense + 15gpt for dyes. Sold incense to India for wm, 6g + 21gpt. Began to merge in a couple of workers.

Swapped steel for ironclads with Germany in 1265AD. India and Persia allied against Spain.

Middle

Persia and India learned combustion. Maybe I should have sold it, but we did get 3 turns onto mass production from not selling it. Sold Ironclads to Russia for wines (8th luxury), wm + 74g.

A number of cities reached max status, including Caesarea, Dyracchium, Adrianople, Trebizond and Naissus. Wall Street became available but with a max treasury of 10g there's not much point building it :crazyeye: An army completed in 1285 allowed construction of the Pentagon to begin, although this army itself was not filled, awaiting tanks :) (it's in Nicaea). Intelligence agency completed in Adrianople, but no spies planted; just about everyone is paying us huge amounts of gpt and I don't want to risk losing all that by planting spies and possibly getting caught.

Russia and India made peace. In 1280 I sold silks to Russia for wm, 66g + 6gpt, and military tradition to Arabia for wm, 71g + 25gpt.

Workers arrived at Smolensk and hooked up the rubber. At this moment in time we have every resource on the planet, all strategic resources so far available and all 8 luxuries :goodjob:

Late

We caught Gandhi attempting to plant a spy :mad: Battlefield medicine completed.

Mass production was researched and we began on motorized transport. I'm hoping that by the time we get motorized transport the AIs will have researched flight. Again, mass production was NOT traded around.

More cities reached max size and shields, and I used workers to irrigate others to get to max size asap. Trebizond, with a police station, is up to 147spt, with 0 corruption!!!

Sold combsution to Germany for wm, 169g + 47gpt. Sold gems to India for 26gpt. German and Russia made peace. Persians decided to renegotiate the gems deal, we now only get 21gpt from them.

Pentagon was completed, and a cavalry added to the existing armies. As mentioned above there is an empty army in Nicaea awaiting tanks.

Just a couple of micromanagement notes to the next player: Constantinople will grow next turn and be working all available tiles. It has one irrigated plains tile which should then be mined over immediately. Also, Heraclea, Sardica and Smyrna are on irrigation at the moment to get them to max size as quickly as possible. Once they are working all availabale tiles the irigation will need to be reconverted back to mines.

Some of the cities further out might benefit from specialists rather than growth. I don't really know much about the new Conquests specialists, so you might want to experiment to see what works best.

In terms of gameplan, just keep cruising along. We're 5 turns from motorized transport, and hopefully the AIs will have flight by then, which we can exchange for mass production and enter the modern age and get a free tech. I would have started a UN prebuild except that Trebizond can build a 1000 shield wonder from scratch in 7 turns :thumbsup: Once we're in the modern age securing the UN will be priority #1, then we can maybe go for the internet for the free labs all round, and then for the space techs.

Since Stuck has asked to be skipped and Elvis isn't back until the 15th, this makes Greebley UP, Betazed ON DECK.

The Save

What do you mean, Aggie? Did you download the save? It looks like a save file but I'll check it.

Preturn:
Speaking of specialists, we could do the following:
Kufah Courthouse in 66 turns => 22 turns
Fustat: Courthouse in 25 turns => 10 turns
Anjar: Courthouse in 72 turns => 24 turns
Basra: Courthouse in 75 turn => 25 turns
Brusa: Courthouse in 56 turns => 19 turns
Ohrid: Aquaduct in 96 turns => Courthouse 26 turns

It might be easier to buy the courthouses so I will let these towns grow for now.

The other option was to make +27 science by switching to scientists, but this did not bring the number of turns down to 4.
Those by far are my favorite C3C specialists +2 shields or +3 science: If we had a lot of corrupt cities in irrigatible lands we could add a huge boost to research by switching towns to no growth and scientists.

Nad, my guess is that irrigation might be better. We could add 10% to our science perhaps with science specialists. We don't need the shields so much if we aren't planning a war? At least until we are actually making Space parts.

I switch Adrianople to Infantry. I wouldn't mind having one in every town.

We could get a lot of cash from our tech

IBT:
Adrianople: Infantry->Infantry
Varna: University->Factory
Trebizond is hit by pollution and immediately shrinks to size 19 - I didn't think of this before, but every town should have a food buffer to avoid this. Build: Colosseum->Granary
Nicomedia: Stock Exchange->Temple

1305 AD: Spend money on upgrading 2 regular spear. Reg infantry should be fine for interior cities.

IBT: Our 2 for 1 lux deal with persia is no long sufficient. I throw in 2 gpt + 8 gold on our side of the bargain.
Spain and Arabia sign for peace.
Constantanople: Comercial Dock->Colosseum
Adrianople: Infantry->Infantry
Caesarea: Colosseum->Battleship
Trebizond: Granary->Infantry
Naissus: Bank->Settler (to steal the German Oil.

1310 AD: Upgrade 2 Pike to Infantry. Accidentally draft in Dyrrachium
Arabia has a worker for trade, so I go out on a limb and give them the valuable tech of Medicine.
Mass Production is down to 3 turns so I check what the AI would give for it. The great deals of 2 turns ago are no longer Available, so no trade is made.

IBT:
Adrianople: Infantry->Infantry
Trebizond: Infantry->Infantry
Spetum: Temple->Granary
Iconium: Settler->Courthouse

1315 AD: Our gold goes from +430 to -21. Some deals expired. I will re-make them. Trade Mass Prod to Spain for 248 gpt.
147 gpt + nearly 600 gold from persia, 1190 gold + 82 gpt from India. This puts gold up to positive 456 gpt and gives me 2031 to spend. I hurry the Courthouses and 1 harbor in the Arabian land to see if this make that area at all productive. Buy Ancyra's market

IBT:
Adrianople: Infantry->Infantry
Kufah: Courthouse->Commercial Dock (If we had 11 production it would get us 3... not to bad as this is one of the farthest cities.)
Nicea: Stock Exchange->Temple
Basra: Courthouse->Commercial Dock
Prilep: Courthouse->Worker
Anjar: Courthouse->Artillery
Trebizond: Infantry->Infantry
Fustat: Courthouse->Commercial Dock
Sardica: Bank->Commercial Dock
Naissus: Settler->Temple
Vidin: Harbor->Commercial Dock
Brusa: Courthouse->Commercial Dock
Ancyra: Market->Granary
Germany declares war on the Russians (via Persian MPP most likely).

1320 AD: Build Samosata and... what a pity... German oil seems to be ours now. Our goverment denies repsonsibility for "rogue colonists" when Germany inquires. Start building walls. Also use Iconium's settler to build a city in ex-arabic lands.

Samosata gets the two Infantry built this turn.

Use our gold to speed up Varna's Factory.

Russia has more gpt so we trade radio for 40 gpt and 140 gold

Lower science to 90.

IBT: Finish moterized transport and start flight (for now - I may switch).
Constantanople: Colosseum->Tank
Adrianople: Infantry->Infantry
Trebizond: Infantry->Tank
Dyrrachium: Police->Courthouse
Pollution strikes Naissus

1325 AD: Spend all cash on upgrading Galleons to Transport (4).
Well India has Flight but the cost is a bit absurd. Decide to wait a round or two to see if anyone else gets it. We can research it in 7.

Russia took out Mecca. The Arabians may be goners. I am tempted to take out Damascus.

IBT:
Adrianople: Infantry->Infantry
Caesarea: Battleship->Battleship
Trebizond: Tank->Tank
Septum: Granary->Cathedral
Nicomedia: Temple->Granary

1330 AD: The price of Flight went down and not up, so I will continue to hold off.

IBT: Russia and Persia sign Peace
Constantanople: Tank->Tank
Ohrid: Courthouse->Commercial Dock
Adrianople: Infantry->Infantry
Nicea:Temple->Commercial Dock
Trebizond: Tank->Tank

1335 AD: Price is still going down.

IBT:
Adri
anople: Infantry->Infantry
Heraclea: Commercial Dock->Hospital
Trebizond: Tank->Tank
Dyrrachium: Courthouse->Colosseum

1340 AD: Decide to not buy flight.

IBT:
Constantanople: Tank->Tank
Adrianople:Infantry->Tank
Prilip: Worker->Artillery
Trebizond: Tank->Tank
Naissus: Temple->Commercial Dock
Ancyra: Granary->Commercial Dock

1345 AD: We now can get flight plus gold rather than visa versa. I think I will continue Flight resarch rather than trading or buying it as we are researching faster than India.

IBT: Spain and Persia sign Peace
Germany declares war on Persia
Adrianople: Tank->Tank
Caesarea: Battleship->Battleship
Nicea: Commercial Dock->Police Station
Varna: Factory->Cathedral
Trebizond: Tank->Tank
Chalcedon: Stock Exchange->Granary
Sardica: Commercial Dock->Granary
Nicomedia: Granary->Barracks
Amorium: Commercial Dock->Granary
Samosata: Walls->Barracks

1350 AD: Now India will offer a pretty penny form Motorized Transport.

Notes:
We are researching much faster than the AI. We may want to try to pull ahead.

I got us up to 8 tank and 30 infantry. Our top 3 cities are building 2 1/2 tanks per turn. We are now average compared to germany rather than weak.

Very quiet turns.

The Save

Great stuff. If we are within a couple of turns of self-researching flight then there's no need to buy from India now.

Betazed is now up. Since today is the 15th and Elvis is supposed to be back, I'll put him on deck awaiting notice he's back and ready. If not, Meli will play next.

So,

Betazed...UP NOW
Elvis ...ON DECK 1 (awaiting notice you're back)
Meli...ON DECK 2 (if Elvis isn't around by the time Betazed finishes)

IBT: Spain cancels the fur deal with us. She will only give us 30G in change for that. So I do not wish to renew it. But seeing that she is paying us lots of gold/turn and she is fighting some wars and we do not need that fur I give it to her for WM and 30G.

1355 AD: veto the barracks in Samsota and rush a library. We need the cultural border expnasion to get the oil solidly in our territory. Barracks to be rushed next.

IBT: Arabia and India sign a MA against spain.

We enter a new age and I get to choose the tech. So I choose computers. Multiple reasons for that. We immediately get a new defensive unit plus we can pull ahead in tech with research labs. Start on fission.

1360 AD: Ew our rubber is protected by cavs. Fetch the transport to transport some Mechanized Infantry. Upgrade infantries to MI. Fission due in 10. I change Smolesnk to a settler. I want to settle right on top of that rubber so that there is no chance of losing it.

1390 AD: Gandhi comes in to the modern age.

...

Overall a very peaceful set of turns. The highlights are

(a) Trebizoid has been building a MI every turn. I switched it to palace now.
(b) Fission is due next turn and we can switch trebizoid to UN
(c) Constantinople has been building SETI and it is due in 10 turns. No one has any modern age tech yet. Persia will get one soon when he comes into the modern age. Russia still does not have either Flight or MT.
(d) Our offshore holdings now have airports.So we can transfer some troops.
(e) I got hit by major pollution on my last turn. I cleaned up some, some still remain.
(f) I did not blow all my cash on the last turn and leave it to the next player.
(g) I have been airlifting workers (yay! we can do that finally, something I always missed in PTW) to our mainland.
(h) Our rubber colonies are very well guarded now with MIs and tanks.
(i) Research Lab built in all important cities.
(j) The world is relatively at peace now. A number of PT got signed. Maybe we should start another war to bog them down.
(k) All our infantries have been upgraded to MI.

And lastly, I mistakenly played 1 turn more than I should have :blush:

Here is the save.
