I just made a test with a unit replacing the settler. To see the death animation I killed off my settler and got this:

I must admit I have some games in my hall of fame. Those were games played by my girlfriend though

I honestly can't recall ever seeing that screen before

The very strange thing that I realize now is that I've never seen that screen either, actually I've never finished a game since I got C3C! (and that screen was very different in Vanilla) I generally lose interest in a game sometimes in late middle age, sometimes in late Industrial Ages, and sometimes when the game is like already won or lost.
