A common problem in today's society, is that it is filled with decite and lies. You can hardly trust your friends, much less a person you talk to in a bar. You believe the words out of some people's mouth about as much as you believe that the earth is flat. If someone says they are going to do something, you rarely believe they are going to do it. It has gotten to the point that praises are given to people who are true to their word. Should not everyone be true to their word and be truthful in general?

My question is, how do you guys feel about lies and people be untrue to their word? Mostly politicians, the media, random people?(I'm not talking about your best friend) Do lash out at them, or just think it to be a common practice, that is getting all to common?

Edited: I'm more talking about society in general(media, politicians,ect...), I know you best friend is likely not to lie to you.

What kind of friends do you have? Ive never had to doubt my friends, as they have never given me reason to. Im sure they've probably lied about something like "Im just going to stay at home" when they have a date or something.

But they have never lied about something important.

Must be your circle

And is this really a thing of today, or has it always been deceitful. Over two hundred years ago Ben Franklin wrote, "Three men can keep a secret if two of them are dead." He realized people were decietful, so I don't think it's changed much through the ages.

In the case of society as a whole: at the end of the day all I can say is that politicians lie, the media is a business like any other, sometimes the bad guys win and sometimes the good guys win.

I sleep quite well at night mind you.

This thread reminds me of that movie with Tom cruise, "YOU cant HANDLE the truth!"

In democracy politicians must lie to be elected. People will not vote for one realistic person, but for one that says is able to fix all the problems.

Why don't you just make yourself comfortable, Moss321, and tell us what happened? Start at the beginning.:D

Lying will be commonplace in humanity as long as humanity exists. It also depends on the situation. If the guy next to me is saying, "Hey, you know if you jump out this window, the wind is so strong you'll get blown back into the floor below us.", I wouldn't believe him. If they're saying they believe that Family Guy isn't funny, I'd disagree heavily, but I'd believe him. Reminds me of a saying I've heard. If you tell a man there are millions of stars in the sky, he'll believe you. If you tell him a bench has wet paint, he has to touch it.

Here is a subject I can really feel for :)

I quite agree with the thread starter that lie is quite present these days. I don't really know if it was worse or better before, but I can make the constatation that sincerity/honesty are not that much valued.
I've seen SEVERAL examples of people who consider a lie a perfectly good mean to reach their objective.
I can see on these boards that many people think it's ok to cheat at a test, and that the only fault is to get caught...
Not even speaking of cheating your partner, and how half people can find excuses and "reasons" to justify cheating and the lie to cover it afterwar.

Well, as for me, I loathe lying. I hate it.
It makes me feel sick, it angers me, and I've the uttermost disdain and scorn for people using it to gain advantage.

I don't think my friends lie to me!

But if you meet me in bar I will tell you the most wonderful stories that come right form my fantasy! It is called entertainment.

A good story does not need to be true!

Johann, I have a plan that can make you millions. I just need you to wire me about $3000 first. What do you say?;)

Rubbish. Politicians give the electorate promises as to what they will do if elected. However when elected every single other politician has made similar but different promises to their electorate. Therefore no one politicians can do exactly what he said he would do. If you want a politician to do exactly what he says he will do then you want one single politician deciding everything for everyone. Also, how many people lie to get a job? How is that different?

Personally I like the fact that people lie. There are some situations where telling the truth is not the best situation. "Do I look fat?" springs to mind. Sure some people lie too much but then some people are too truthful. It's all about moderation. And you should question everything.

"Yes, you are."
or, if you mind about not hurting her :
"Well, let's say you could lose some weight."

I nearly hate as much people who ask questions but don't want the answer as people who lie.

There is in fact very few real situation where telling the truth is not the good thing. If some people can't cope with the answers, then they should not ask the question.

Questioning everything is not a justification for lying.
And being truthful is actually a good thing.

Sometimes a lie can come in handy, I don't think that's so bad. I don't know if the world would be a better place if everyone told the truth all the time. But what I loathe is when people use lies at other people's expense, like when they abuse other people's naivity.
