Now THIS is a bad start!

Hi Chieftess!

The terrain is not bad at all. The UGLY part is all the rest. As Iggy said, i had space only for 2 cities (in ICS!!!). Then, i started at the very edge of a continent (palace jump needed), and all of this at Deity level.

Hey tR1cKy, I just read the entire thread over the course of four or so days (thanks to constant interruptions) but it was easily the most entertaining story I have read since that one Celtic thread that's so popular (don't remember who wrote it). Good job in coming out with the victory! I don't think I could ever do that, especially on Deity (I'm still a Regent player). Once again, good job! :goodjob:

Thanx bob!
BTW, less than a year ago i was a Regent player too (struggling with Monarch). You just have to improve in the way you play. It's all but impossible to master Deity. However this game was quite an exploit for me - i didn't imagine to be able to play so well until i faced this challenge!

The story you're referring to is the "Celtic Peacekeepers" by DaftPanzer. A great story. Too bad the author lost progressively its grip and so the thread became prey of shameless spammers, until a merciful moderator (hi Chieftess! ;) - again) closed it.

Ah, yes. Daftpanzer? What ever happened to him?

Anyway, I did learn a lot from your game. I especially never thought of how you could exploit the AS like that. Also, I never realized how important artillery are, and the fort strategy sounds like its pretty effective.

Wow! :goodjob:

I just read the entire thread from beginning to end. I feel like I just played a marathon session of Civ. :crazyeye:

Anyway, great job and thanks for sharing all of that. As a relatively new player, I learned a lot and have a hard time seeing myself pull something like this off. Oh well...guess I should actually do some work today before the boss finds out.

I've always wondered about that. Maybe he's still getting another post ready for the thread(s), not knowing that they have been closed down ;) .

WOW! I'm amazed on how this thread still attracts new people, since it's a few months since the story is over. Needless to say, i'm quite proud to see new posters and a viewcount still growing so much.

Now, kud0s to everyone posting their appreciation to this gamelog! In particular, the new entry Misery: should you have problems with your boss, i suggest a visit at The Register. Once there, click on the "BOFH" section. You'll see how the BOFH (Bastard Operator From Hell) and his assistant the PFY (Pimply Faced Yourh) deal usually with bosses once they become an annoyance :D

About Daft and its Celtic Peacekeeper story, well i have no idea where he's gone. Probably he lost interest in the story, in the game and in the forums as well... who knows? Anyway, please note that we're talking about 2 different types of stories. The Celtic Peacekeeper was essentially an epic tale. This is just a gamelog with some fun jokes and a pair of brief excussions into storytelling.

It took me a whole week to read this log (every day 5 pages) but finally I reached the end! ;)

Great Gamelog, tR1cKy, and congratulations with your Domination Victory! :goodjob: The last two years I had lost interest in CivilizationIII, but the last couple of weeks the CivVirus has taken me once again in his grip (also thanks to this thread) and I've started playing again. I've learned a lot from your log, specially the great role artillery can play, i've always neglected this. I also liked that Combat Settler Strategy. Can't wait to use it myself once my exams are over; only two days to go... ;)

Indeed, a brilliant read! You've now inspired me to actually go ahead with some of the seemingly "crap" starts I get, and try to make the best of them, rather than just giving up and generating a new map!!! :)

Thank you very much guyz! It's awesome how this gamelog still attracts people, considering it's over since months. :hatsoff:

Parkin:  when the challenge is more difficult, the final victory is more rewarding!

i just became a member today and when i first stumbled upon this sight this was the first story i read did i stink then yes but now i do a better job at stinking :crazyeye:

Yeah, I'll start reading htis too. I've seen a much worse start: France on a 2-tile island. Completely random too...

I didn't think that was actually possible?

It is. The other tile was plains too!

Sorry for bumping this but I wanted to say how much I
enjoyed this. I read the whole thing in a day.
Yesterday the first time I ever ventured into
this part of the forums or ever read one of these.
Wish Ida done it sooner, not only informative but entertaining.
I like the style used. :goodjob:

Maybe if I start praying to those rng gods
I'll start getting better results

Thanks..

This is one of the most entertaining things that I have ever read! Congrats, tR1cKy, on your victory. :D

If this thread has taught me one thing about CIV, it's that no game (or start) is unwinnable. I personally am struggling with Chieftain level right now (C3C), but then, I'm not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer to begin with. Your 'Fort' strategy is quite possibly the most ingenious thing that I've ever heard of.

And the ViewCount for this thread is astonishing!

Thanks for an entertaining afternoon of reading this thread while sipping Blueberry tea.

You are the Man! :goodjob:

Tricky, Can you post the actual saved game file here so we can try your challenge???
