Once some final adjustments are made, i intend to post it here. It won't be bad to have some indipendent opinions. Would you like to test it? It's for vanilla, but there are 2 batch files for installing and de-installing in a single click.

P.S. anyone interested in it could drop a line.

1380AD - A run against time

The turn ends, and nothing happens.

It's a run against time now. Go to hit the Iroquois before Bob has a chance to regain mental sanity and exit from his horrible war weariness situation. I buy a world map from the Iroquois. No sign of a rail network yet. 25 gold well spent.

The 2 stacks of frigates and galleon continue their sail. The 2 free galleons are loaded with 4 riflemen, 2 cannons and 2 settlers, and sent toward the New World escorted by the 2 remaining frigates. There are 2 galleons still to be assigned. They are both sent in the first node of the ship-chain system. The node will be completed next turn. Another galleon is rushed in Texoco: it will be the mainland terminal of the chain.

Six cavalry units are sent south to Roma. Escorted by the 2 rifle units being trained in Thebes and Romola, they will form the invasion force that will deal with the 2 southern colonies of Oka and Kahnawake. The 2 galleons that will transport them are being built in Roma and Memphis. Elephantine will provide the escorting frigate.

There are 2 nice spots that can be settled in the mainland, one west of Augusta and the other NW of Calixaca. With a temple rushed there, more tiles will be claimed and the domination limit will be closer. Forte Mungo and Augusta will provide the necessary settlers.

Here's a shot of the interested area. Blue spots are the settlement zones. The solid border delimit the tiles reached with rank 1 culture (dark blue) and rank 2 (lighter blue). A total of 17 tiles will be claimed. Not much, but i cannot snub anything.

tR1ckyBS036.jpg

1385AD: The two fleets procede toward the ex-Persian peninsula. Next turn they will be in range for dropping their deadly cargo on the open plains of Persepolis and Pasagardae. A third stack, with riflemen, cannons and the combat settlers follows 5 tiles behind. Some riflemen are available south of Texoco. There are 8 cannons and 8 cavalry units ready to be sent as reinforcement for the invasion.

In the southern scenario, the fleet due to strike at Oka and Kahwanake is still to be assembled. Galleons are rushed in Roma and Memphis. The escorting frigate will be in position next turn. Cavalries and rifles are already in place.

This is all, apart from the usual tasks of workers. Bob is still at war with Persia. Abe is still sitting on his 3500 golds. I trade maps with Bob again. Not a single rail has been placed yet.I end the turn, and prepare for the invasion.

In the interturn, 6 iroquois frigates show up around the choosed area for the invasion. It won't be a harmless trip for our warships, after all.

In the shot: the approaching Roman fleets are about to meet their Iroquois counterparts. A sea party is about to begin?

...
I was sure that only land tiles count to the domination limit.

Coast tiles count, but not ocean. I think that sea tiles count too.

Checked the 1st save with MapStat. You're right. S#!T.
Coastal tiles count. Sea tiles don't. :(

If you mean 'boats' i think i will. Those 6 iroquois frigates are ready to accept the sacrifice.

Playing session right NOW. Will my valiant forces be able to gain a foothold and capture those 2 cities? We'll know quite soon...

Last but not least: THANX to all those who rated this gamelog! 19 votes for an outstanding 4.74 average rating - it really whips the llama's ass!

1390AD - The sea is on fire

Those 6 frigates will be a real pain for my invading forces. I must expect some losses. But i have the advantage of the 1st strike, and i'm confident that i can take out 2 of them from the battlefield.

First, Bob must declare on me. Let's steal his world map, immediately. 158 gold. The mission is successful, and i obtain his world maps :( Not a single rail line has been layed yet. Good, but i must repeat the mission, in order to achive failure :) The 2nd attempt is "successful", and...

tR1ckyBS037.jpg

Ok, that idiot has declared. Now? It's time to deal with those pesky frigates. Let's sink 2 isolated ships and regroup into a single tile. Bombardment is successful, one is at 2/4 and the other at 3/4. The 2 other frigates finish off them with minimal damage, and regroup on the first node. The stack of galleons headed for Persepolis drop the units and retreat in the first node, escorted by 4 frigates.

The northern stack of galleons won't be able to retreat in time once their cargo is unloaded and they will probably be attacked... damn! By moving the 1st galleon toward Pasagardae, 3 more iroquois frigates are spotted! Seven of those pesters in total. At least 3 of these galleons will be sunk, but i've secured the communication line for the moment. The 3rd stack is moved to the lone galleons, but cannot reach them in time.

I end the turn, and the enemy ships attack.

The attack is furious. 2 frigates came out of Persepolis and 2 arrived from north. 11 of those beasts, all of them attacking. When the hell is over, 5 of my galleons and 1 frigate are under the sea. But lots of Iroquois ships are redlined and 3 of them are sunk.

The land skirmish of the Iroquois is less than expected. 5 cavalries and 1 knight attack the troops SW of Pasagardae. 3 riflemen are damaged and 1 is killed, but all the attacker are killed or badly damaged. A regular rifleman defend the city.

1395AD - Counterstrike

Now it's my turn. First let's deal with Persepolis and Pasagardae.

My artillery bombard Persepolis. A vet pike and an elite spear are weakened, and 2 cavalry units finish them off. A regular pike shows up, but the 3rd cavalry dispose of it and enters the town! Persepolis is captured. Size 2, all the 2 pops are resistors. Seven units amassed should quell the resistance quickly.

On the northern front, cannons bombard Pasagardae and redline the regular rifle. A pike and 3 redlined cavalries are in the city, and are easily disposed by the superior Roman cavalry. Another mounted unit dispose of the redlined knight. All the cavalry units have been employed in battle and were successful, but not a single one of them has been promoted. Pasagardae is size 3 with 2 resistors. All the available units are amassed in the town for a quick quelling.

Now, the ships. There are 2 redlined frigates in range for the galleons. They are full of troops, but it's worth the risk. A redlined enemy unit can heal and come back harassing. A sunk enemy unit is much less troublesome :) The first galleons wins and is promoted elite. The 2nd is redlided, but finally manage to sink its target. It was full of riflemen...

The 2 war galleons unload their cargo at Pasagardae and fortify there. The stack of frigates move north to harass an enemy stack of 1 full-strength and 3 redlined frigates. Some bombardment redline the sane frigate, then the last frigate and a galleon kill 2 of them. Another galleon is sent and is redlined, but kills another enemy ship. The damaged galleons now must heal quickly.

The combat settlers could move, but i prefer to leave them in the city, and send them founding their forts only after the stack of cannons outside Pasagardae enter the town. Cannot risk losing them, and cannot expose Pasagardae.

Meanwhile, the ships of the southern fleet have reached their gathering point. Next turn they will sail to Oka and Kahnawake.

At least another galleon is needed to complete the ship-chain. It's rushed in Texoco. The galleon now in the town move to the 1st point. One of the ships stationed there moves for the 2nd.

Nothing else must be done. The turn ends. The lone frigate at full hitpoints attacks my stack and kills my frigate, taking only 1 hp of damage. It heads north, but i'll reach it  Some iroquois harassers come from the north, but don't reach Pasagardae, and stop their course on the open plains. Fools.

The first attack has been successful. Not a single land unit has been killed, and 2 iroquois cities are now in the hands of Rome. A relevant number of ships is lost. The naval power of the Iroquois war stronger than expected.

In the image: the situation on the Iroquois scenario after the first attack. Since the map of the battle plan reported an obvious error (i also draw the line as if it was ok!!!), the position of the 2 forts is reported again (and this time the correct one!) with the tiles they will claim.

I'd be somewhat surprised if you claimed that much territory from Susa and Ashur upon building those forts. What rank cities are they? If they are rank 3, won't they keep most of the territory within their 21-tile control?

What's after Susa and Ashur? My strategy is always make a b-line to the capital. Knocking out the capital may move the palace to a disadvantageous location and it always seems to have a few wonders.

BTW, the steal world map trick HAS to be my new strategy.

Yes those cities are rank 3, but the tiles will be mine anyway. The lowest rank always prevail and once i build the forts those tiles will be rank 1 for me and rank 2 or 3 for the enemy. They will suffer the cultural pressure anyway (lots of tiles under enemy control) but in the following turn i should capture Susa and Ashur.

Then, we'll see. I'll continue the invasion but a precise plan is yet to be made.

Oh, and you may be glad to know that your beloved Chicago is shining again! Size 7, temple and harbor completed, going for a courthouse. Alas it's still corrupted.

To all posters and lurkers: i may be away from the console for a day or 2. Once i'm back, i'll continue the log. Seeya!

Cool! I didn't know that. I was surprised when you were right about your fort by one of the high-culture American cities. I guess I've always built too close to the enemy city.

Heh, I enjoy reading this, but there are many more important things in life than CivIII. (Heresy on this board, I know.) Take a break, you deserve it.

Funny, I though it was the military advisor filling dual roles...they look alike to me. :rotfl:

Anyway, here's the update. Lots of pix this time - enjoy!

-------------------------------------------

1400AD - Consolidation

Rome has gaining a solid foothold in the Iroquois territory. A large number of troops are present on the former Persian peninsula. They're more than enough to withstand iroquois skirmishes and prevent any cultural flip problem.

Pasagardae is size 3, but one of the inhabitants is still Persian! Good for me. 2 foreigners, zero iroquois culture and (from next turn) no tiles under enemy control. Iroquois culture is circa 1.5 times mine. 3 units should be enough to reach the safe limits.

Persepolis is a little worse. 2 iroquois pops and an enemy culture of 220 points. This should mean 6 or 7 garrisoned units... better keep it with minimal defense and send some cavalries should the city flip. Anyway, a worker is rushed. Why risking more than required?

A harbor is rushed in Pasagardae, in order to supply the mainland with dyes and heal quickly the redlined galleon currently in the town.

Now let's deal with the ships. The roman fleet has suffered heavy casualties, but the stack of enemy frigates is fleeing. I decide to kill another frigate. After 3 unsuccessful cannon volleys, the 4th frigate attack and sink the enemy losing only 1 hp. Meanwhile, the healed galleon in Pasagardae moves to its assigned node in the chain line.

Troops: in the newly acquired territory there are 11 riflemen, 10 cannons and 12 cavalry units. More than enough to deal with the harassers, hold the 2 towns and move safely the 2 settlers to the founding site of the 2 forts.

One cavalry, 2 pikes and 2 longbows are currently in my territory and need to be disposed of. Cannons weaken those maggots and cavalries complete the task. A stack of 2 cannons and rifle is sent escorting a settler in the planned spot in enemy territory. The other one must colonize an unclaimed tile, and so it's kept safe for now: it will be moved next turn, in order to build the 2 forts at the same time.

Now let's move on the Old World. The fleet parked on the shores of Roma is loaded with units and sent toward the southern iroquois island. Next turn they will be in range for unloading the troops.

The first of the 2 settlers builds the town of Perusia, in the free land spot west of Augusta. The 5 useful tiles are immediately claimed. A temple won't be needed. A rifleman moves from Augusta to assure a minimal defense on the town, just to not attract iroquois pesters. 5 tiles grabbed, 235 for the domination limit. The 2nd settler will found its town 3 turns from now.

Finally, 4 riflemen are loaded into the galleon in Texoco and sent through the half-functional shipchain line toward Persepolis. Next turn they'll disembark.

Nothing else happens, apart from the usual slave works. I end the turn. A cavalry charges Pasagardae, but is weakened by a cannon and disposed by a rifle who gets promoted elite. A longbow try to attack the "settler stack" but fails miserably. A regular musket moves on one of the dye tile. A frigate and a galley approach my stack of frigates, probably with the intention of dropping some lousy units on my new land. None of them is worrysome.

1405 - Pestering

The harbor in Pasagardae is completed. By connecting dyes, the unhappiness in the Empire due to the unavailability of that luxury is eliminated.

In the New World, Forte Cesare and Forte Augusto are founded. More land is claimed from the Iroquois Republic. The domination count increases again. 639 tiles owned, 220 yet to be claimed. By moving the settler on the building tile, 3 more iroquois pesters are spotted, 2 pikes and 1 longbow.

This is a shot of the front just after the building of the 2 forts:

tR1ckyBS038.jpg

I've done some math. Both Persepolis and Pasagardae will be safe from cultural flip with 3 garrisoned units. Pasagardae will be OK with 2 once an iroquois worker will be tear off from the city. The planned barracks aren't really necessary now, since all wounded units are all at 3/4 or 4/5 hitpoints.

The cannon and the cavalry north of Persepolis are moved into the town. They will help in case some lousy boat from the southern colonies will show up and drop some pesters. And, of course, they're needed to avoid the flip. The loaded galleon is moved to Pasagardae so it can drop its cargo into the town.

With 2 extra galleons (to be built) Forte Augusto will be perfect as the endpoint of the ship-chain line, since the length of the trip from Texoco is exactly 23 tiles. To have the chain built i'm currently short of 2 galleons. One is rushed in Texoco now. The other will be probably rushed from Pasagardae, i'm keeping this decision for the end of the turn.

The 2 iroquois ships are bombarded and sunk. But the first bombard are unsuccessful and i need to call a just-healed galleon from Pasagardae to sink that 2/4 galley. The lousy boat is sunk, but the galleon is badly damaged and needs to be healed again.

The stack in Forte Cesare is moved on the open plains west of Ashur... and brings some unpleasant news: a stack of obsolete units. is on the mountain NW of Ashur. 3 muskets, 1 pukeman and 1 spear. Apparently, they are escorting a worker. Now there's an high chance that they will join the city, and probably this means no coordinated strike on Susa and Ashur. Then, more cannons will be needed.

tR1ckyBS039.jpg

Cannons are moved in the 2 forts, where they bombard some pesters in my territory. Riflemen follow. Since i need to keep my cavalry safe, i get rid of 2 pesters north of Forte Cesare with the riflemen. The 3rd, a redlined pike, is killed with a cavalry. The redlined musket is left alone, he's not a nuisance. The few healed cavalries are moved to the forts, the other stay in Pasagardae where they'll be healed next turn.

The southern fleet reach the coastal waters of Oka and drop its cargo. Amazingly, only spearmen defend the city. But Kahnawake, the other settlement, has a harbor and is defended by a rifle. I hope Bob won't come up with the money to upgrade those lousy spears. Anyway, the ships rest in the zone. Probably they'll be needed to transport the excess cavalries to the "hot zone".

Here's a shot of the territory around those 2 worthless settlements. Assimilation is due next turn.

tR1ckyBS040.jpg

In the Old World, little worth reporting. The settler is rushed in Forte Mungo. Some slaves continue their work. Units continue to flow slowly to the gathering points.

I choose to not rush anything. I'm half-tempted to steal Steam Power from America. Supply line would benefit of that. With the current treasury and income i need 2 turns for a careful attempt and 3 for a safe one. We'll see. Ah, no galleon rush in Pasagardae then. And no immediate rush of barracks in the 2 forts. They'll be rushed next turn for 36 gold each instead of 120.

I end the turn. The stack of old units doesn't move into the city. They go to harassment instead. A large number of obsolete iroquois units has moved to the game tile north of Force Augusto. I couldn't care less of the game, but i need that tile to attack Susa. The filty AS seems to know that perfectly... Another fleet of 1 galley and 1 frigate has come from the north and pooped 2 cavalries on the same tile. I spotted various obsolete units coming from the north, including an army of swordsmen...

Anyway, here's a shot of the zone after the interturn. Lots of promotions to elite, i guess...

Anyway, we'd better keep political discussions off this thread ;) Nothing is better than politics to attract spam, flames, trolls etc.
