OB01 - Time Gentlemen!

I also dont have Warlords. I wouldnt mind going with
Qin Shi Huang. He has 2 of the best traits along with a nice mid UU. Hes Financial and Industrious and I think were gonna like those 1/2 price Forges, 1/2 price banks, and 1/2 price wonders not to mention the extra commerce

Heres a writeup I did on the ChoKos.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=186626

They should come around right about when someone wants to attack us...which will be nice. :hammer:

Its also winning the best UU thread.

I say go ahead and start this puppy and well get someone else along the way.

Just to clarify, there is no discount on Banks as Ozbenno noted. Also, wonders receive a 50% production boost, not a 100% boost. So they are also not half price.

highlands or oasis might be the lowest production maps to give a hand
If you really want to limit production, nothing is better than lots and lots of water and desert. A civ like Qin would certainly have an advantage with the commerce boost and discounted forges.

hopefully roll a start tomorrow.
Would this translate to tonight for those of us in the "new world"? :)

OK, we've got 5! I'd like one more before we kick this baby off.

But also, I'd like the groups thoughts on the game, mainly:

  • Vanilla or Warlords (I'd prefer Vanilla but happy with whatever)
  • Leader (random or pick). I think Mansu would be the best fit if we pick (spiritual for constant civics/religion changes and financial for bribing). State you leader if you want us to pick
  • Map type, highlands or oasis might be the lowest production maps to give a hand
  • Speed, normal or quick
thank god that i have a new civ4 vanala disc but i will miss vassal states Ubs GGs and the vikings oh welll
yes i guess mansu would be a good choice
i have never tried oasis so ill go with that
normal

OK. We're going with Oasis, Standard and Normal speed. I'm still torn between Qin and Mansu, so what the heh, I'll roll a start for both of them and throw in a random leader as well :).

Firstly, meet the King of Pain himself, Huayana Capac.

Secondly, he's mild mannered but you should see him if he's had a few, yes it the double trouble of Mansu Mansu.

Last but not least, one of Civ IV's great backstabbers, the portly Qin Shi Huang.

Well none of the warriors were in a decent enough position to reveal the whole story. So it ain't that easy to tell. From what we can see Huayana has the best start (2 food and plenty of hills) but I'm also liking the Mali start, looks like two floodplains.

What about tech direction? We have two options I think, go fairly standard research or go the religion hog and seed discord through the world (can you tell which way I'd like to go).

For mine I still think Mansu is the man. I'd go Mysticism, Polytheism, Pottery, Bronze Working, Masonry and Monotheism and throw in whatever worker techs we need.

Post thought today and I'll play the first turns tonight.

EDIT: I just realised Huayana starts with Mysticism, I'm torn now!!!

Lets go the religon hoarding path
im still for mansa musa just because his UU is way better and last until the mevial age

Im fine with the religion route as well. Mansa or Capac is also fine. With either start, going the religion route, theres prolly no need to build a worker till size 2 or 3. And by waiting on the worker, you can get out some more explorers and/or future settler protectors.

Capacs start has alot of production capability and dont see a need to move the settler. Mansa might be better moving 1 or 2 tiles north to possibly gain a floodplain....and maybe gold.

Quick question, if you take Mansa and research fishing first then research your normal path, grow to size 2 and work the lake tile, how many turns does that shave off getting your first religion. Even If those turns equal the amount it took to get fishing, its still worth it. But Im not sure of the exact numbers.

How about a 3rd route? The money route! Pottery->Currency->CoL

Since we cannot declare war, we will need to expand eary, while we can. I say we run the research slider into the ground to finance our expansion. Keep research focused on those techs that provide money! The southern land should support a good cottage spam strategy. It would be a painful early game, but it should pay off in the end.

Mali's Skirmisher would be fantastic with this strategy. However, that Mali start looks like it is all the way at the bottom of the map. I would prefer a more central capital.

Well I was hoping to start this last night but I was at a BBQ all yesterday and must have had a dodgy prawn because I fell asleep on the couch when I got home (nothing to do with the many beers consumed).

I'll start tonight. We'll go 30,20,20 and then 15 afterwards (dropping to 10 in times of war).

I'd prefer playing with Mansa, for the rest the tech path and all does't really matter to me, I tend to go with the flow :)

Time to start this baby up.

Firstly, here's Timbucktu!

Look familiar. Nope, didn't think so. You see there was this problem and the dog ate the save or I overwrote it accidently or something like that . Anyway, that's not important right now!

Start building a warrior and researching Mysticism.

That hut was good! Every other one in my turns (and there were a few, good scout) gave me cash.

Mysticism in and now for Polytheism (I go for this over Meditation as it is a pre-requisite of Literature).

Warrior in and I start on a worker. We're at size 3 already.

First contestant arrives.

Phew!

Double phew!

I start on Fishing, as a pre-req for Pottery.

Found you Peter!

Here's Timbucktu after my 20!

Worker in 4, settler next I think. Worker can mine hills until Pottery.

Fishing in 1, pottery next (in 7 I think). We then either go hunting, archery or chase monotheism. My preference would be hunting, archery, writing, priesthood, code of laws. Could we get Oracle if we went Priesthood now and grab CoL (or Theology). Its a thought?

Whoever is up next should be able to found city #2. I'm rubbish at dot maps but would suggest going north for floodplains and elephants.

First time through the order we'll just go with who is able to grab the save quickest.

The Save

3200BC...Press Enter
3160BC...We learn how to make fishing nets...oh wait...theres no fish around...can we throw a net around those lions? Could we have gotten another tech besides fishing to get to pottery, like agriculture or wheel?
Civ4ScreenShot0028.JPG

3040BC...Scout is sneaking past a lion
3000BC...Borders pop and worker done who is promptly slapped around and told to mine a hill. We can grow in 5 or produce a settler in 17. If we grow, we can produce a settler in 13 because we will be able to work the mine. I build a warrior and hope thats not a goofy move. Our scout is still tiptoeing around this Lion.
Civ4ScreenShot0029.JPG

2960BC...Worker starts mine and scout is still wondering why this lion has really good ears. Scout decides to take off moccasins and go barefoot.
Civ4ScreenShot0030.JPG

2920BC...Lion smells scouts nasty cheesy feet and runs away.
2880BC...We learn how to make cereal bowls...er...we have no grains or fish...what are we eating...grass? We see cow in a pasture and wonder what its for...we go over and poke it with a stick and run like hell. Maybe some day we will learn what this strange creature is for. Maybe we can learn Hunting and hunt these beast.
Civ4ScreenShot0031.JPG

2840BC...Rumble in the Jungle!!! Our Intrepid warrior lands next to a lion. He has heard tales of others who have revealed their stinky feet to lions and avoided contact. He tries this, but his feet smell like roses...he braces himself.
Civ4ScreenShot0032.JPG

2800BC...He wins the battle and is now more proficcient at future jungle battles.
http://www.deadzoom.com/member/yoohoo3131/OB01/Civ4ScreenShot0033.JPG

Our city grows to size 4 and the warrior I was producing will be out in 1
2760BC...Our worker is told to make a cottage on a flood plain....he says he doesnt know how.....we poke him with a stick and give him a cereal bowl and tell him to figure it out. Our city starts a settling party due in 13.
2720...We meet this midget who tells us of his great empire...blah...blah..blah...what a talker. Our warrior, who has no diplomatic skills, pokes him with a stick and runs like hell.
Civ4ScreenShot0036.JPG

We learn how to Hunt stuff so we go back to the cows hoping we can use these beast for something. The cows start laughing at us and we go away crying. Lets go make some bows and arrows...well show those cows whos the boss.
Civ4ScreenShot0037.JPG

2640BC...We meet this kooky fellow who we like immediatly
Civ4ScreenShot0039.JPG

2600BC...We killed a Lion...guess that hunting is good for something
2560BC...Cottage is done, send worker to mine another hill. He says he wants a break...we poke him with a stick and he shuts his pie hole.
2520BC..We learn Archery and i set research to bronze as we need to chop some wood. We get a warrior from a hut..woopee.
Civ4ScreenShot0040.JPG

2360...Thats my 20. Settler out in 3. Still havent lost scout. Worker just got finished with mine. BW in 5 turns. Unsure as to where the settler should go in the northern territory. He really should be next to the river not only for the health but also because we wont need a road. after settler and maybe a skirmisher or 2, Stonehenge can be done in prolly 13 turns....just a thought. Heres a pic of that northern territory.
Civ4ScreenShot0042.JPG

and a pic of where the midget is
Civ4ScreenShot0043.JPG

This was my first SG report and i wanted to get it out of the way early...good luck to whoever is next.

One more thing, itll take at least 2 turns for a settler to get up north and settle. Bronze will come in at that same time, Dont settle till BW comes in and it might give you a better idea on where to settle. If you settle on the river, religion will spread fast. We could prolly build Stonhenge in our second city after a skirmisher and with a chop and build Oracle in capitol.

It seems I missed the start... that's what I get for drinking all weekend. Put me down for lurking/ replacing/ peanut gallery, then.

Heres a dot that might work. Its on the river and can share production with the capitol. If you move 1W, youll gain the 2 oasis, but youll be unhealthy at size 2 or 3 until the cow and sheep are online.
