OB01 - Time Gentlemen!

Randall_Flagg said:
Whatever happend to ya'lls GE? I remeber him being put to sleep, but no one has said they used him.
Ozbenno is correct. We used him for 740 of the 1500 hammers needed to build the Statue of Liberty.

Its 1832AD. 174 turns left!

I bring Tokogawa into the war with Peter.

Why? Well if he moves this out of Arbela we should flip it.

Also, it will bog him down producing and moving troops across our lands to get to Peter (if he bothers), which can only help as he is second in score to us now. He stands to gain nothing out of it as well.

Steel comes in for some nice cannons and I pick Astronomy. Was tempted by Railroad but don't want to cheapen it for the AI.

It worked!

We build Wall Street.

War weariness is biting so we start some jails and research Fascism, comes in last turn. I set research for Scientific Method to head to Communism for Scotland Yard but can be changed. Also, do we switch to Police State to get rid of some war weariness? I think so.

Played 9 turns to get us to 1850AD.

Oh, how's the war going you ask?

Let's just say Peter ain't doing so well. He still won't talk though. Yekateringburg should fall next turn as well.

That's an impressive lead in GNP  We have over 6000 in the bank as well. Another reason I want to get Scotland Yard going, we can finance a lot of spying with this cash.

The Save

FuRRie, you're UP

Im glad peter wont talk. Lets trudge through the WW by turning up the slider. Id rather have have that now than 50 turns of "We long to join the motherland". Lets finish Peter and make sure that Toky doesnt steal Moscow.

Got the game, will play asap.
Most likely later this evening or tomorrow morning.

I took the liberty of updating our National Wonders list:

Forbidden Palace - Delphi DONE
Iron Works - Kumbi Saleh
Hermitage - Culture DONE
Oxford - Timbuktu DONE
Wall Street - Timbuktu DONE
Heroic Epic - Zapotec DONE
West Point - Zapotec DONE
National Epic - Niani DONE
Globe Theatre - Niani
Mt Rushmore - TBD
Red Cross - TBD
Scotland Yard - TBD

I'm thinking we should put Mount Rushmore in Djenne. It is a good high hammer city with no other National Wonders.

My inital thoughts on Scotland Yard are Uzbek or Culture, since they are more centrally located. The spies will be heading west towards China and England, most likely. However, putting it with the Iron Works may make more sense. After railroads and Factories, Kumbi Saleh should be able to turn out a Spy in a single turn. Thoughts?

Ozbenno said:
Conroe, if you can grab the save its yours!!
Let's give Furrie a bit more time. I won't be able to play for another 4 or 5 hours. If we still haven't heard anything by then, I will post a "Got It" and play.

Ozbenno said:
Scotland Yard! I've never actually built it before (one of the motivations for this game). Would we use a spy a turn? If so, yes to Kumbi Saleh. If not, Red Cross might be a better combo for Kumbi Saleh (medic factory).
I haven't played with spies much myself. IIRC you are limited to a max of 4. Mine seem to get caught a lot, though. So, I am constantly training replacements. In a normal game, I would combine the Iron Works with Red Cross. Not sure how everyone else felt about that, though.

I played a game before where the tech leader was closer to space than i was. I kept sending in spies to take out his mines, lumbermills and watermills where he was producing parts. I launched 2 turns before he did. In our case, It may not be a bad idea to sabatoge his happiness and health resources depending on what would hurt him most. The problem there is that is temporary as workers will have it online quickly.

Maybe the biggest payoff is slowing down their tech by sabotaging towns. Towns take a long time to grow back. If it takes 24 turns to grow a village to a town. Then he loses 24 coins x banks, markets, grocers, library's, and universities. That could add up to being greater than the 200 coins we spend on the spy.

guys i'm so sorry, i got cluttered up in work.
feel free to skip me for this round.
I was planning to play tonight but I have a party with some bulgarian folks so I really can't.
I'm very sorry guys :)

Sorry folks, but something has come up. It looks like I won't be able to play tonight, after all. I should be able to play it tomorrow, though.

 War weariness is through the roof! Many of our cities are starving, what with all of the anti-war protestors. I think Ozbenno's suggestion of a civics swap to Police State is a requirement.

I'm also not sure how much :hammer: I'll be able to accomplish. Our forces are spread out pretty thin all along the Russian front. In addition, many of our Infantry are wounded and are in combat without the assistance of a medic.

Turn 295 (1850 AD)
Since we lose the ability to cash rush by switching to Police State, I decide to spend 420 gold to hurry a few odds and ends. We are still sitting on almost 6k in gold, though. Then, I do the civics switch.
Revolt to Police State from Universal Suffrage
Revolt to Slavery from Emancipation
Revolt to Free Market from Mercantilism
Since we can no longer cash rush, I wanted to be able to at least pop rush. I decided to switch to Free Market because it is a huge increase in our gold. Plus, it gives the AI a bit of extra income, as well. Remember all of those gpt trade deals? Let's renegotiate them before the money gets spent:

OB01_1850AD_Trades.JPG

Mao didn't get any extra money. It looks like his trade income is coming from Russia, I suppose.

I give the pigs back to Zapotec! Please do NOT switch them back to Walatta again! We built the Heroic Epic in Zapotec. We want to maximize the hammers the city has available. Unless the city grows to work all of its tiles, it cannot do that.

OB01_1850AD_Zapotec.JPG

I also notice that we have a couple of Monasteries being built in the former Greek cities. I assume they are being built in an effort to push back the Greek cultural borders. But, we only need 3 turns to complete Scientific Method. Since this would obsolete the Monastery before it could be completed, I decide to turn research completely off for a couple of turns.

And lastly, I think we need more troops on the Russian front. To this end, I decide to commit our reserve forces. We have quite a few troops in the former Greek cities. I am going to gamble that Alex will not declare on us and send those troops to Russia. Of course, we will need to make sure we send them back before Cabledawg's turn!

IBT:
Peter learns Democracy and adopts Emancipation. What wonderful timing I have!

Peter then counter-attacks our troops ...
While defending, Infantry defeats (20.00/20): Russian Catapult at 100.0 percent.
While defending, Infantry defeats (12.40/20): Russian Catapult at 100.0 percent.

Turn 296 (1852 AD)
Timbuktu builds: Jewish Temple and begins: Cannon
Kumbi Saleh builds: Observatory and begins: Infantry
Walata builds: Factory and begins: Infantry
Culture builds: Factory and begins: Cannon
Coal Blooded equips: Cannon and begins: Cannon
Since we have no method of building Jewish Missionaries ...
Niani builds: Bank and begins: Jewish Monastery
Athens builds: Hindu Temple and begins: Jewish Monastery

I also decide to spend about 3000 gold to upgrade our reserve Catapults and Grenadiers.

Turn 297 (1854 AD)
Zapotec equips: Infantry and begins: Infantry
Djenne equips: Infantry and resumes: The Pentagon
Research is turned back on at 40%. Scientific Method still due in 3 turns.

Peter has more reinforcements heading towards Yekaterinburg. If I don't take the city now, it is going to get a lot tougher. Unfortunately, we have no healthy troops, but the odds are strongly in our favor.
The defenses of Yekaterinburg are reduced to RUBBLE
While attacking, Infantry defeats (4.80/20): Russian Rifleman at 97.3 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (7.00/20): Russian Rifleman at 92.3 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (13.00/20): Russian Catapult at 99.9 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (7.00/20): Russian Catapult at 100.0 percent.
Captured Yekaterinburg (Peter)

OB01_1854AD_Yek.JPG

We have reinforcements marching on Yaroslavl' for an attack next turn. However, Tokugawa's forces will be able to attack in 2 turns.
The defenses of Yaroslavl' are reduced to 36%

Turn 298 (1856 AD)
Zapotec equips: Infantry and begins: Infantry
Walata equips: Infantry and begins: Infantry
Delphi builds: Hindu Temple and begins: Factory
Rostov comes out of revolt ...
Rostov begins: Theatre :whipped:

First order of business is to take care of the troops that Peter is sending into our borders ...
While attacking, Infantry defeats (7.00/20): Russian Grenadier at 99.5 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (15.20/20): Russian Grenadier at 99.9 percent.

Next, take a look at what Tokugawa is up to ...

OB01_1856AD_StPete.JPG

He is marching on the Jewish holy city of St Petersburg. St Petersburg and Moscow are the two crown jewels that we want to capture. Tokugawa will most likely raze the city if he takes it. Unfortunately, I have no healthy troops. I'm going to send what I have to tag along behind him. Hopefully we will get lucky and he will attack without lowering the city defenses, as I have seen the AI do so many times. :crazyeye:

I also take the :whipped: to all of our Monastery builds, as Scientific Method will be complete in 2 turns.

Next up is our assault on Yaroslavl' ...
The defenses of Yaroslavl' are reduced to RUBBLE
While attacking, Infantry defeats (13.60/20): Russian Rifleman at 90.9 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (13.20/20): Russian Rifleman at 75.1 percent.
While attacking, Infantry loses to: Russian Rifleman (14.00/14) at 75.1 percent. Uh-Oh!
I wasn't planning on that one! I no longer have enough troops to take the city. It looks like Tokugawa is going to get this one. He wants 4000 gold to make peace with Peter. I am going to stop the attack now, while Peter still has a couple of Riflemen available. Maybe we'll get lucky, but I doubt it.

IBT:
Henry Bessemer (Great Engineer) born in Walata

As expected, Yaroslavl' is razed by Tokugawa. Meanwhile, Arbela goes into revolt. The revolt would later end without the city flipping to us.

Turn 299 (1858 AD)
Culture equips: Cannon and begins: Cannon
Niani builds: Jewish Monastery and begins: Globe Theatre our FP farm!
Athens builds: Jewish Monastery and begins: Market for the happiness
Rostov builds: Theatre and begins: Barracks
We need to push back the Greek culture in order to claim a few more tiles in our captured Greek cities ...
Thermopylae builds: Hindu Monastery and begins: Hindu Mandir
Sparta builds: Hindu Monastery and begins: Hindu Mandir

With the loss of Yaroslavl', I send more of our troops in the direction of St Petersburg. Our forces are also marching on Moscow. I noticed earlier that we had a half-completed Settler in the build queue at Uzbek. It gets bumped to the top of the queue.

I send our Great Engineer off to Djenne to see if he can help out with the Pentagon build. I also notice that the option to start a golden age is available; which means, of course, that we have another great person sleeping somewhere. It turns out it was a Great Prophet. I send him off to Timbuktu to be merged; that 5gpt will be 15gpt with Wall Street.

IBT:
Peter launches a counter-attack on our boys stationed at Novgorod.
While defending, Infantry defeats (15.20/20): Russian Grenadier at 99.9 percent.

Turn 300 (1860 AD)
Tech learned: Scientific Method and Research begun: Communism
It looks like Peter got the free Great Scientist that came with Physics. Peter and Tokugawa also have Biology.

Kumbi Saleh equips: Infantry and begins: Infantry
Zapotec equips: Infantry and begins: Infantry
Coal Blooded equips: Cannon and begins: Cannon
Orenburg comes out of revolt ...
Orenburg begins: Theatre

There is some resistance on the road to Moscow ...
While attacking, Infantry defeats (20.00/20): Russian Catapult at 100.0 percent.

Our Great Prophet gets merged, while our Great Engineer will provide 780 of the 788 hammers remaining on the Pentagon.

Meanwhile, we get a look at St Petersburg and its defenses ...

OB01_1860AD_StPete.JPG

Tokugawa only has 2 Catapults and a couple of Grenadiers available to attack next turn. I've got 4 Infantry and 2 Cannons; the healthiest of which is at 65% strength. It will be 3 turns before I have healthly reinforcements arrive to attack.

IBT:
OB01_1862AD_MostTech.JPG

Turn 301 (1862 AD)
Timbuktu equips: Cannon and begins: Factory
Djenne builds: The Pentagon and begins: Factory
Walata equips: Infantry and begins: Infantry
Uzbek equips: Settler and resumes: Factory
Awdaghost builds: Jail and begins: Observatory
Orenburg builds: Theatre and begins: Barracks

Tokugawa has bombarded the defenses of St Petersburg, as more of his troops arrive at the outskirts of the city. I decide to keep my cannons quite, while more of our troops arrive, as well. It is a bit of a gamble, as Tokugawa out numbers the Russians by a 2-to-1 margin. However, our forces do not number enough to take the city.

Our forces do arrive at the gates of Moscow. The city is well defended, but our Infantry here are healthy.

OB01_1862AD_Moscow.JPG

IBT:
Tokugawa's attack against St Petersburg was successful. He keeps the city.

Turn 302 (1864 AD)
Zapotec equips: Infantry and begins: Infantry
Tadmekka builds: Factory and begins: Cannon
Yakutsk equips: Cannon and begins: Cannon

The defenses of Moscow are reduced to 18%

IBT:
Our stack at Moscow gets attacked ...
While defending, Infantry defeats (17.80/20): Russian War Elephant at 100.0 percent.

Turn 303 (1866 AD)
Gao builds: Factory and begins: Cannon
Culture equips: Cannon and begins: Cannon

Let the battle of Moscow begin ...
The defenses of Moscow are reduced to RUBBLE
While attacking, Infantry defeats (16.20/20): Russian Rifleman at 62.8 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (20.00/20): Russian Rifleman at 71.9 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (2.00/20): Russian Rifleman at 71.9 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (20.00/20): Russian Grenadier at 90.3 percent.
At this point I decide to stop the assault. Peter has reinforcements enroute to Moscow. If I take the city, he will most likely just take it back. I think it might be best to wait a turn. Tokugawa has no troops in the area.

Meanwhile, a stray unit is wondering around ...
While attacking, Infantry defeats (14.80/20): Russian War Elephant at 99.5 percent.

IBT:
Moscow counter-attacks ...
While defending, Infantry defeats (8.80/20): Russian Rifleman at 99.3 percent.

Turn 304 (1868 AD)
Zapotec equips: Infantry and begins: Infantry
Rostov builds: Barracks and begins: Cannon
Novgorod comes out of revolt ...
Novgorod begins: Theatre

The battle of Moscow resumes ...
While attacking, Infantry defeats (9.80/20): Russian Rifleman at 79.5 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (11.00/20): Russian Grenadier at 95.6 percent.
While attacking, Cannon defeats (12.00/12): Russian Catapult at 99.6 percent.
While attacking, Cannon defeats (10.68/12): Russian Catapult at 100.0 percent.
While attacking, Cannon defeats (12.00/12): Russian Catapult at 100.0 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (20.00/20): Russian Catapult at 100.0 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (6.80/20): Russian Catapult at 99.8 percent.
Captured Moscow (Peter)

OB01_1868AD_Moscow.JPG

More reinforcements are were heading towards Moscow ...
While attacking, Infantry defeats (15.20/20): Russian War Elephant at 99.9 percent.
While attacking, Cannon defeats (10.44/12): Russian Catapult at 99.6 percent.

Look at what Peter did! He put a junk city right down next to the ruins of Yaroslavl'! Right next to our Settler and troops. :crazyeye:

OB01_1868AD_NewCity.JPG

While attacking, Infantry defeats (14.40/20): Russian Grenadier at 99.1 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (18.00/20): Russian Catapult at 100.0 percent.
Auto-Razed Khabarovsk
New Yaroslavl' founded
New Yaroslavl' begins: Theatre

Tokugawa is in position to take Krasnoyarsk next turn.
The defenses of Krasnoyarsk are reduced to 32%
While attacking, Infantry loses to: Russian Rifleman (5.18/14) at 69.4 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (17.20/20): Russian Grenadier at 98.8 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (20.00/20): Russian Rifleman at 99.7 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (20.00/20): Russian Catapult at 100.0 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (20.00/20): Russian Catapult at 100.0 percent.
Unfortunately, I can't count! I do not have enough troops to take the city. It is defended by a lone Catapult. It looks like Tokugawa will get another one.

IBT:
Krasnoyarsk is captured by Tokugawa. He decides to keep the city.

Enrico Dandolo (Great Merchant) born in Niani
With 10,000 gold in the treasury, I really don't think we have a pressing need for a trade mission. We might want to lightbuld a couple of turns off of Railroad, or maybe merge him in a city that could use the 1 food he gives. I am leaving him with movement.

Turn 305 (1870 AD)
Tech learned: Communism and Research begun: Railroad
I was tempted to go with Biology, but I really like having a rail network. Feel free to change it, though.

Kumbi Saleh equips: Infantry and begins: Ironworks
Zapotec equips: Infantry and begins: Infantry
Walata equips: Infantry and begins: Infantry
Uzbek builds: Factory and resumes: University
Tadmekka equips: Cannon and begins: Cannon
Novgorod builds: Theatre and begins: Library

I didn't think about it in time, but we should probably build the Kremlin in Zapotec. With as much gold as we have, being able to cash rush 33% cheaper could come in handy.

Our war correspondent reports that Peter is down to his last two cities. We have a ton of troops by Smolensk, so this will be ours to keep. We have more troops than Tokugawa at Vladivistok, so we will get to take this one, as well.

OB01_1870AD_Smolensk.JPG

OB01_1870AD_Vladivostok.JPG

Unfortunately, Tokugawa was able to win the grand prize of the Jewish holy city.

OB-01_AD-1870.Civ4SavedGame

Pre: I up science to 80% and burn the GM on Railroad.

T2: Arbela revolts and joins our Empire :goodjob:
Capture Smolensk, Russians have 1 city remaining

T3: Capture Valdivostok => That's the official end of the Russian empire.
I swap to Universal Suffrage.
Drop science to 20% to net us 1000GPT and railroad still in 1 turn.

T4:

Select Biology as our next tech.

T5: Science to 90% and start Railroading our lands up.

T6: Mao demands Assembly Line -> I Decline

T8:

Select Combustion as our next tech.

Nothing else happened untill turn 10.
I Suggest keeping research high and inscrease our tech lead over everyone. If someone decides to declarte they will be decimated (like what happened to Peter).
If nobody declares, we shoot for space.

The Save:

Bye Peter!

And , FuRRie, we don't shoot for space, we play out time!!!

Got it, may be able toplay tonight. If not, tomorrow.

Plan is to get Scotland Yard up and running. I'll drop the research and just pick up what the AIs already have and put some cultural pressure on St Petes. Now we're in Universal Sufferage, we can buy a lot of culture very quickly.

Now that Biology is in, I'd probably suggest we head towards whatever the tech is that allows Supermarkets. Our cities could use some extra health. Plus don't the Supermarkets give a boost to cash the way Grocers do?

Also, what about the Kremlin? Did we build it?
