OB04 - Five Is The Magic Number

I start by changing to forges in a couple of places.

Paper comes in. I select Guilds.

War weariness is killing but not sure of a civics switch just yet.

Akkad whips library, Toledo whips market.

WW reaches 8 . Police state we need, so civics change it is.

Ramses declares on Izzy as well.

Barcelona is bombarded down to 0. 3 catapults and a treb selflessly die. However there were so many units here that even after all our forces attack and win, there is still one mace left inside. However, next turn...

We pop a GG, I send him to Ulundi, our best hammer producer without a military instructor.

The race for Madird is on. Our troops are still healing after Barcelona but we'll have to take the city next turn as Ramesses will if we don't.

When we do take it, we should get ourselves a little vassal and then take the fight to Ramesses.

I have a settler nearby for re-settling Madrid once peace breaks out. We should look at building another soon.

Our first 9xp units should be rolling out the gate next turn :goodjob:

Excellent job, Ozbenno!

WW reaches 8 . Police state we need, so civics change it is.
Ouch! This makes me wonder if she has the Statue of Zues. That is a pretty rapid increase in war weariness.

Also, have we moved the Settlers out, yet? Since Izzy capitulated we won't be able to declare again. We need to grab any prime real estate before she does.

The settler is sitting in our closest city. I don't want to move it into enemy territory until we raze Madrid. It will take 2 turns to have the city resettled. If we're worried about Izzy resettling, don't accept capitulation until we have it settled. WW is bad but not crippling, we could even keep the war going but I want to get at Ramesses sooner rather than later.

Also, I forgot about Heroic Epic in Cuzco.

Looking good! I'll see if I can at least open the game and offer some comments as I cannot play. I should have my computer up and running for CIV by next weekend.

Oops! My bad. :smoke: Evidently I stopped reading after that last screenshot showing the peace deal. I thought you had already razed Madrid and made peace. Sorry 'bout that.

Ok got it. Excellent warring Ozbenno. :goodjob:

Will post thoughts tomorrow night and Play report thursday (friday at latest)

Ralph

Well I guess the key decisions for the team to agree on (no time to play tonight but will play / report tomorrow) are

1. Raze & resettle Madrid (Buddhist holy city so will take a hit with Darius and Rameses) then Vassalise Isabella.
2. Research post guilds. Do we start the long road down Chemistry Military Science or Aim for rifling, in some ways it may be a redundant question as the result of the game will probably be decided before we unlock riflemen or grenadiers?
3. Post vassalsing Spain assemble forces ready to tackle Rameses?

Ralph

With vassalising Izzy, I'd see if her cultural borders are going to bother us at New Madrid first. This is our last chance at her.

Research, I'd head towards whatever is quicker rifles or grens. Grens have the advantage of leaving cannons one tech away.

We probably need some knights and pikes before tackling Ramesses but shouldn't delay too long, heal exisiting troops, apply the whip and go.

Yes he had some marauding knights against izzy so we will need to beef up on pikes. I also side with the gren path worked well last game but is more complicated now in BTS needing Mil science also.

So we are about to embark on our classic Rule of X Stage of “well we aren’t allowed to build anything so lets go bash some heads phase”. Which of course is a lot of fun!!

As normal we get our standard rave review form the scholars of the day as to how we are doing.
rAVEREVIEW.jpg

So first to deal with Isabella, which considering the forces Ozbenno left outside Madrid shouldn’t be a problem.

IHT Dispatch Spy to Egypt who sits there during our turn set earning discount and then gets booted out on the last turn resetting everything to zero grrr.. don’t worry we built some more who are on their way but won’t be effective for a few turns!! I do rebalance spy spending to start accumulating points versus Rameses..

1410 AD . Conquer Madrid and immediately resettle, we will get some cultural pressure from Isabella but the city won’t be swamped..
madridfalls.jpg

And Isabella capitulates. I decide that with the -17 for Razing her cities turning her into a happy productive vassal could be tricky!!!

Isabellacapitaulate.jpg

Guilds comes in and we start on Gunpowder, nobody else has it yet but we will see if that persists.

I set up Cuzco to pop a great merchant next as we can use one for the a trade mission fuelled upgrade in the end game. It will only just win the GP race versus other cities who will pop a non-useful one so watch out for the Governor assigning specialist elsewhere.
cuzcogreatmerchant.jpg

During the turns we get an interesting random event, I guess Ozbenno will rule that rebuilding the lost building is OK.
Toldeorandomevent.jpg
I have started deleting underutilised workers as the unit support costs were non-trivial and there wasn’t much to do.

Other than that we have been building Knights and Pikemen to combat Rameses knight threat.

So EOT

I have divided our forces into 3 stacks (currently unmoved) Although I think we could have attacked a turn or two ago bearing in mind the Power curve decided it was worth getting team buy in before pressing the button.
Power-2.jpg

The stack in what was Madrid (don’t ask me to say its name can either be a 2nd front versus Rameses or to clean up the little cities he has resettled in the gaps our Razing frenzy left
stack1.jpg

the other two stacks should push straight into his territory

stacks2and3.jpg

At the end of turn Victoria now has Gunpowder but hopefully wont beeline to chemistry Military science so our Grenadiers have fun versus her Redcoats

Well done Ralph.

It might be worth selling Guilds to Izzy (does she have horses? We should give her somespare ones if she doesn't) so she can get some Knights so help us.

Definately think one stack should raze all the little cities in the area and the others head inwards. We raze until Ramesses will capitulate (and we've got an extra city plonked down).

Do we have another settler? There is space on the Egyptian border for a new city (well there will be).

I started off by renaming the city of Dur-Unpronouncable to New Madrid. As for the idea of gifting our spare horses to Isabella ... well, we didn't have any spare horses. She might be able to pick some up after we raze Heliopolis, though. I decided to hold off selling her Guilds, for the time being.

Before declaring on Ramesses, I took a look at what active trade deals that we have going on with him. Needless to say, I was shocked to see that we were selling him iron. But then I realized what a really good deal it was ... for us! He already had his own source of iron; he didn't need ours.

I replaced the Sugar by selling our spare Dye to Victoria. As for the beef and pork health resources, we had since connected our own and they did not need to be replaced.

And then it was hammer time! :hammer:

ob041500addeclarewarnv5.jpg

Ralph stationed our forces on the border of Akhetaten. Naturally it was the first city to fall. No losses.

ob041505adakhetatenpt2.jpg

Ramesses newest city of Hieraconpolis, founded north of Cordoba where the barb city used to be, was autorazed by one of our gallant Knights. Again, no losses.

ob041510adhieraconpolisfu9.jpg

After that, the war began to slow down. Mainly because it took so long to march through the Egyptian cultural borders to get to the cities. Ramesses did make a counter-attack on our stack outside of Giza, though. It really hurt that this stack did not have any Pikemen.

But for the most part, it seemed like Ramesses sent every LB that he had to the city of Heliopolis. With 7 longbows, several of which were CG2, I ended up sending two of our stacks after that city. It would eventually fall, though ...

ob041525adheliopolissd8.jpg

We lost a lot of troops taking that city. A lot. Longbowmen in a city on a hill are tough to begin with. The odds weren't great, but after I suicided the trebs, they were at least in our favor. The RNG was not kind to me. :shake: Our CR3 Cover Maceman lost with 95% odds. Those are the ones you remember. :undecide:

I ended up combining the 2 stacks into one uber-stack for the march on Thebes. Our remaining Spy revealed that Ramesses still had quite a supply of Longbowmen. Plus, I was hoping that he would pull some of the troops out of Giza to reinforce his capital.

The remainder of my turnset was spent marching to Thebes and reinforcing our troops at Giza. On the last turn, the defenses of Thebes were reduced to rubble. Unfortunately, none of the siege units has any movement left.

ob041550adthebesyy6.jpg

I'm not sure if we have enough forces on hand to take out Giza. We definitely wouldn't with my RNG.

ob041550adgizacc2.jpg

Also during my set, Gunpowder came in and I started us on Chemistry. We also completed the Heroic Epic in Cuzco and I set the city to building Trebuchets. Since Babylon and Tiwanaku were so far away from the front, they built nothing but Knights. The only building to report is a Granary in New Madrid. We are also starting to see some war weariness in our cities. Nothing we can't handle at the moment, though.

We have a Settler (and escorts) standing atop the hill that once contained Heliopolis. The hill is still inside Egyptian culture. We can settle the city once Thebes is razed. Or alternatively, we can pick a different site, as this city will be under pressure from England. Anyone have a preference?

I decided to fire the spy in Tiwanaku and hired back the 2 Priests. It should pop a Great Prophet in 6 turns. Alternatively, we have the option of (possibly) a Great Merchant out of Cuzco in 15 turns. This is something else we should probably decide ...

ob041550adleaderpopyh3.jpg

We've got 70 gold in the treasury and are spending it at -2gpt with 30% on the slider. Chemistry is showing at 15 turns.

And lastly, the save ...

Nice progress Conroe. New Madrid does seem much better.

I think the fact Giza isn't on a hill might help us out. In any case we seem to be short on trebs, so re-inforcements are on their way. I would say if we can get through these two cities we should have broken the back of his defense.

Did we get a settler produced to grab some Egyptian land? We've got two cities left, I thought one here and one in Vicky's ex-barb city.

I'm assuming you're still on skip Kodii, so Mighty Dwaarf is UP!
