Official announcement: Hot off the presses. Next Civ game in development!!!!!!!

I think this really misrepresents the NFP. There was no paid dlc that exclusively involved fantastical elements. They were ancillary to the selling points of new civs.

Regardless, I'm not going to part with my money for Civ VII at launch.
Considering my experiences with Civ VI.

It took several patches to make it stable. The release for the Nintendo Switch was awesome!
So I will wait until after a couple of patches (and it's on sale) to buy in.

TBH we are inundated with 4X games now: HUMANKIND, Old World, Dune: Spice Wars.
Really I have no time to play now.

I would however be first in line for Beyond Earth 2 though! 😁

Better graphics for what reason? Good graphics is for FPS games. In Civ you spend most of your time watching the world from satellite and the rest are diplomacy, economy and other screen studying numbers. We don't care about flowers on the hillside.
Says you. I actually do care about the flowers. And, I'm not alone! I remember all the posts here lauding Humankind's pretty graphics when that game was new.

I think it goes without saying that Civ7 will have a more advanced render engine, but I do look forward to seeing how they use it (e.g., Civ6's day/night cycle was a very pleasant addition).

I'm curious if they'll follow suit and adopt Unity/Unreal for the next game, or stick to their properiatry engine.

I'd personally be surprised if they moved away from using a proprietary engine.

I’d love it if we got seasons! Even if it were purely aesthetic like the day night cycle.
I was actually thinking the same thing. At Civ's scale, I wouldn't want seasons or (mundane) weather to have mechanical effects, but it could look beautiful on the map as an aesthetic effect.

I wouldn't.

Engine require so much more resources to get running, while Unity has all that tedious work done for you.

Afaik, Sims 5/Project Rene has gone that route. More and more Indie and even big games are now using Unreal/Unity.

Yeah, I want better graphics for sure. That’s what I meant about taking advantage of hardware. I feel no shame in wanting that.

Civ 4 is really ugly. Civ 5 is also ugly and looks dated.
What compensates Civ4 for its ugliness is its replayability though...

I'm always amazed at the number of people who think aesthetics don't matter. Like, its the same reason why even business software looks nice because it makes interacting with it a better experience. Aesthetics, visuals, graphics, whatever you want to call it, it matters. If I'm going to spend hours upon hours upon hours looking at something, I want the experience of looking at it to be as enjoyable as playing the game itself.

Unity and Unreal come prebuilt but lack the flexibility of in-house engines. Also Unreal in particular is a royal pain to mod.

Not really no. They're pretty flexibility, and can be quite powerful when used right.

Humankind was done in Unity.

House Flipper was done in Unity.

Two VERY different games.

I can't imagine what exactly they would *need* that would be better with a built-in engine.

Very much ready for the civ 7 hype train to get underway. The speculation game should be fun even if the endless 1UPT debates won't 😜

Personally hoping they try and work on making the late game more interesting and less of a click fest.

Graphics are a draw. As much as IV was a great game it's hard to go back to it now... At least for me. Maybe I'm shallow.

I wonder if they could get on the remaster thing and update some of the older iterations. That would be seriously cool

Do older versions need better graphics? I love Civ3 and consider it an interactive boardgame.. don't really need changes imo.

After the first Civ, the odd ones have been the worst.
Oh no, you didn't say that.
I think it goes without saying that Civ7 will have a more advanced render engine,
This is interesting. How much would this game offer in terms of RAM? I'm not asking about Linux compatibility just to put one over on Microsoft but also because some games running on different partitions of the same computer would demand different capabilities depending on the OS I was using.
Why can’t we have both: a great looking game with replayibility?
Look no further. It's called civ3.
