Just wanted you to know that Firaxis has launched their official discord channel.

Personally, I find discord to not be able to replace the forums, but it is a nice addition for those on it.

I like Discord--for small groups--but I generally avoid video game-based Discords except for a couple indie games, where I use it for getting news. For Civ, I feel like I'll get all the news I need either from Steam or here.

I just added Discord and it showed my real name since I am in a university based discord as well where they ask us to show our real name, lol. I got other games on discord too so its cool.

think about Discord as if it was a IRC server owned by a community, where all channels revolve around that community.
and just like old irc servers did, discord will not kill forums -- facebook and other social medias would do that

Not at all. Primarily, a Discord server hosts a series of chatrooms called channels that are meant to divy up discussion topics. Each one is like a big group chat. It's a platform designed to be kept open in the background with little ping notification noises whenever someone sends a message. It was originally designed as a means for gamers to bundle text chats and voice chats into one place, if that helps

However, certain Discord servers are organized into channels and forums, in which people can make posts which then spiral into threads. I don't know if the Civ Discord server is or not.

The enjoyment of any Discord server is highly dependent on how active the users are and how well-organized + moderated it is.

If you like the in-depth discussions and (generally) polite demeanor of Civ Fanatics, I don't think it would be worth your time, as Discord is better suited for casual small talk.

Can't say as I've been impressed by any discord's I've visited, but then, I'm a certified Old Fart.

In my opinion, Discord is better when it's a small group of users. Large Discord servers are difficult to keep track of and to carry on a decent conversation because the chat flies by.

Moderation here is much better. The discord is owned by the company and set up to be a marketing engagement channel. Firaxis’ marketing team participates here, but they don’t run the shop.

I used to have to use diiscord for certain mobile games i've played it the past but they were created for and by the clan if you like that i was a part of and most were awesome. I joined the Civ one but soon left as it sucked.
