A lot of discussion has been happening recently regarding the NES and IOT sub forums. At this time staff does not believe there is any merit to merging the two sub forums, but a secondary discussion around the naming of the IOT sub forum has developed.

I would like to take the time to host a sanctioned discussion within the IOT sub forum regarding a potential name change for the sub forum. The first step would be to ascertain if there is indeed a desire within the community to enact a change at this time. This poll is designed to answer that very specific question.

If the outcome of this poll indicates that there is a desire for a re-name, further work will be done to identify options for the new name. This is not the time or place to debate specific names – that will come later.

This poll will be open for 3 weeks, and responses are public. Please consider your response carefully before voting. Take your time to talk through the issues and make an informed decision. Remain level headed and be considerate of other’s points of view and opinions. Flaming, trolling, name calling and being a jerk will not be tolerated. Condescension and statements of superiority regarding a point of view or group of people will also be looked upon negatively by staff.

Let’s have a mature discussion on the merits of a name change and not get personal.

I just want to get this over with.

I'm going to remain neutral on this vote because my opinion on a rename really depends on what the new name is. While I do want to be more inclusive for our new residents, if we try and rename ourselves to something stupid then I'd be really against that. I doubt I could be convinced that there is something acceptable other than IOTNES, NESIOT or a variation on that theme with a good description under that tbh.

Also I apologize for my behaviour in the previous thread, I won't act like that again.

Let us have a new name that reflects the new community we have, and ideally breaks down a few more if those barriers between NESERS and IOTERS

I'm all for NESIOT, but I could be OK with NES/IOT as well :)

I have been thinking about this and plan to offer the current name in any future poll regarding name options. This way if the existing name is preferable to any other option there is a method to keep it.

I support a renaming to reflect the changing make-up of this sub-forum and for a reflective new approach towards strategic narrative forum gaming.

Well with that in mind I'll vote a tentative "yes".

We should probably have multiple polls though, with the options that get few-to-little votes getting pruned along the way. I'd suggest instant run-off but I think we'd have to go offsite to get that functionality and I doubt the admins would be thrilled about that. :p

Assuming this poll is in strong favor of a name change, then we will begin the process of identifying name choices. There will be a process to narrow down the options to a few finalists, likely through a set of polls. I intend for this process to be deliberate vs. quick. ;)

I actually like Imperium Offtopicum as a name, even as a NES migrant. I voted no, but I would like it to be a qualified no, in that if a truly awesome name emerges in the poll suggestions, I would vote for it, but at the time, Imperium Offtopicum is just as good or better than more of the other suggestions.

No merger, no rename. Simple as that. We can talk about changing our name once it happens.

The merger has happened de facto. If 5-6 NESes on the front page of IOT isn't a merger, then I don't think backing up an inactive forum to it would be a more "merged" community

De facto is not the same as de jure. Until a de jure shift has happened, IOT is the way to go. And once it merges, it needs a name that represents that it is, de jure, a shared community: NESIOT.

This entire debate aside, while it's going on I do want to use this space to say I think it's fairly imperative the subforum description be changed, as "Forum for IOT games" does not tell anyone anything remotely useful.

Agreed.

I can agree that the description should be changed to explain what it is exactly we do here.

Yes the description needs to be changed badly.

However, I am far more in the Megan camp here.

I want to be inclusive and representative, but I don't want the IOT name to be lost or marginalized.

But I also fall far more into the SK camp. I just want all this to be over, I'm tired of all the fighting and sectarian division, I'd rather just play games tbh.

So I'm tentatively not voting to see if I can be convinced, but again I fall more into the Megan camp here.

It has already merged. De jure should reflect de facto.
