I just finished building my new PC:

Antec 1200
Silencer 750W
Asus M4A88T-V EVO/USB3
AMD Phenom II X4 945
8GB RAM
EVGA GTX 460 768MB DDR5
1920x1024 HD LCD

I started up Civ5 to see what it recommends: 1600x900 with most of the settings on High, terrain on Medium. Shadows Low.

Is this to be expected? Would it lag if I keep it at this setting but bump it up to 1920x1080? Or do I keep it at 1600x900 and max out the detail setttings? Or do I simply stick with the recommended settings?
 
You really should use your display's native resolution.
Civ5 graphics performance is not very sensitive to the resolution, and the 460-768MB should be able to handle maxed out settings with 2X or 4XAA.
If anything, your CPU will be the limiting factor.
 
I dont know any computer stuff so....
i have a hp with a intel gma3100 graphics card and E53oo processor.
can i play the game without trouble or buying something?

Games often set the resolution to something besides your monitor's native resolution (assuming you are using an LCD monitor), just go into the options and change it (checking the options is the first thing you should do with a new game anyways).
 
Just picked up CivV, before checking the specs, so of course i can't play it. Thinking about building myself a gaming computer. Any recommendations?

Specifically for civ5, a sensible mid-level build would be around

nVidia GTS 450
4GB RAM
intel i3 CPU

If you want to spend a bit more, and/or for more general gaming usage a gtx460 and a i5-760 would deliver the most bang for the buck. Won't need more RAM for gaming.

Oh, cool! I just noticed these requirements. Good thing I did, as I am about to order a new computer and the CiV demo doesn't even work on my current computer. :D (It does, but freezes every turn. :rolleyes: Then I have to restart and begin a new 1-turn demo game.)
 
Thats still going to be a few years, 2 gigs is still enough to run pretty much any game on high graphics levels on XP. Only thing to come close is Dragon Age: Origins with high-res texture mods installed.
 
Dumb question time. When I open device manager (Windows 7) to see what kind of video card I have, two are listed (ATI Radeon HD 4200 and ATI Radeon HD 5400 Series). When clicking on properties it says each of them are working properly.

Here's my problem. When I start CIV V it plays the intro fine but once the intro is over I get a message on my monitor that says VGA mode not supported (or something to that effect). Do I need an HDMI cable to correct the problem? My wife got my computer upgraded for Christmas so I could play CIV V (great woman!) but she did it as a surprise and I wasn't able to talk to the tech that did it and I'm basically computer illiterate. I can still hear the sound through the whole thing but my monitor goes black then the message I mentioned apprears. The message seems to be coming from my monitor if that makes any sense.

If anyone can quit laughing at this post long enough to give me some suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. :crazyeye: :lol:

Have you tried running minecraft?
