Oh Kim, you wacky guy...

From one extreme to the other.

Strange how the policys of the extreme right match those of the extreme left.

I'm not even sure if you could call North Korea extreme "right" or "left." It's more like insanity with some political label attached to it.

Purifying the gene pool, are we?Nasty business, that. And generally frowned upon by those pesky Ivory Tower westerners.

See Kim, if you really want to get this kind of program going, you need to tap into the power of technology. Do it right, and your population will purify the gene pool for you, with a bare minimum of fuss. Though I grant, it's probably hard to convince people to spring to first trimester screening when they can barely find enough to eat. Might want to fix that first.
Next, I think he should get rid of all the overweight, jumpsuit-wearing schizophrenics. Then North Korea will be one step closer to purity. :mischief:

Lil' Kim does seem to treat things as though they were one big strategy game sometimes, doesn't he?

Probably another idea of his that wouldn't even be enacted, much less realized.

If anyone thinks that this is one of the rare cases in which the entire CFC community agrees... think again.

There is at least one CFCer who thinks that everything is fine and dandy in North Korea. Guess who...

For the last time, the famine in North Korea is receding. While it is true that North Korea has indeed endured a famine since the early 1990s, that famine was due to a combination of factors beyond Kim Il Sung's and Kim Jong Il's control, namely the collapse of the Soviet Union and subsequent loss of 70% of North Korea's trade, severe meterological conditions including torrential monsoons and even a tsunamie, combined with the lack of significant arable land in North Korea. Though the nation went through a famine during the 90s, the famine has receded, and industrial, agricultural, and electricity production are once again on the upswing.

No, it's not staged. Every travel report, hell even the CIA, shows the KPA helping farmers. If it were staged it would be on such a scale that it would help them anyways.

I'm really getting tired of the "OMG DICTAAYTOR STARVING PPL OMGOMG!!!!" posts that comprise 97% of any thread on North Korea.

Since you brought up the CIA:

In 2004, the regime allowed private markets to sell a wider range of goods and permitted private farming on an experimental basis in an effort to boost agricultural output but in October 2005 retracted some of those policies by forbidding the sale of grains in markets. The regime also revitalized its food rationing system in October, an apparent backtrack on earlier reforms. Black market prices have continued to rise, leaving some vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and unemployed, less able to buy goods. As of December 2005, the regime intended to expel all nongovernmental organizations by year-end and tightly restrict the activity of governmental and international organization aid organizations such as the World Food Program. Firm political control remains the Communist government's overriding concern, which will constrain any further loosening of economic regulations.

That doesn't sound very promising to me. In fact, i can't get this text and pictures you posted to match.

That is why i am skeptical. It is rather a case that is somewhat analogous to he say and she say.I trust neither government, but try to understand both sides.:)

Highly suspect pictures. The people in them look too fair skinned and pretty to be real farmers and soldiers. ;)

Really? You mean that the famine could not have been avoided if they had appealed to the international community, begged for the food, and agreed to liberalize their nation? That couldn't have staved off famine? I betcha anything it could have, but they CHOSE to not take that route because they were/are crazed, power-hunger oppressors.

Who are you again? Oh right, you're the one who think's it's America's Holy Duty to rid the world of evil.

Interesting retort, but I notice you DID NOT do is say I'm wrong, that it wouldn't have prevented the famine.

I'm sorry, I thought that calling you an idiot would suffice.

You're wrong.

Happy?

Very happy. So basically you are saying that there is no way, even if they agreed to open their borders and reform their country, that enough food could have possibly been delivered to prevent to famine and loss of life. I guess we'll just have to disagree.
