Yesterday the large fruitless mulberry tree in our front yard was 100% fully leafed out. No leaves had fallen and all were green. This morning 90% of the leaves have dropped. It just took one cold night (below freezing) to cause it to lose its leaves. losing most of its leaves all at once is typical but when it happens it is always a dramatic change. That tree shields us from the afternoon sun. We have two other mulberries that are slowing dying from the both the 20 year drought and from being 70 years old. The one in the picture is the picture of health because its roots have tapped into the sewer line that runs through the street. It has all the water and rich nutrients it needs! The leaves all fell between 7:00 and 8:00 AM this morning.
Tree roots in the sewer line can cause a very messy backup if the pipe gets blocked.
I'm not sure if there's still a minuscule gap in the window after I closed it when fall came along, but now I'm freezing. I'm wearing 4.5 layers and my hands are cold. It's -9C, with a wind chill of -16C. Those would be warm during the day, but it's almost 11 pm.
About an hour north of me their getting absolutely hammered with lake effect snow thru Sunday. Here's a link to the video, and here's a screen capture from the weather report FB page:
Does the weather usually make your wife talkative?
It's -18C here, but with wind chill, more like -27C. That is below my comfort zone.
It's just past midnight, and I'm freezing. There's a draft somewhere in the apartment, and I'm probably going to have to break out another fleece blanket.
I went shopping earlier to stock up on on-sale chicken pot pies, and so help me, it felt warmer outside than inside (inside my place; I was actually overdressed for the mall). Small rave: I found the gloves that I replaced during my last trip to the mall. I thought I'd lost one, but it turns out that it just got shoved further down in my coat pocket and I didn't notice. So I've got extra gloves, which is never a bad thing.
Tentative plans for tomorrow are to do laundry, and just take a book and wait in the laundry room. No windows there, no draft.
Too cold for Alabama. Weather keeps wandering into the twenties overnight. Honestly, what's the point of enduring our miserably hot and humid summers if we have to fuss with water pipes and go to bed wearing thermal underwear?
I got used to 18C being cold.. spent most of my time in Taiwan dealing with 25C+ weather. It was cloudy at first but a week and a half or so into my trip it was sunny skies and sweaty backs. Then once I returned to Taipei eventually it got cold enough for the locals to start wearing jackets.. 18-19C.. which meant I had to put on more than just a t-shirt
I returned to Canada and holy crap, there's snow and ice and 60-70cm of snow forecasted for the next 18 hours. Also 70 km/h winds. Awesome
At least my work closed down for the day, my first scheduled day back. So that's something
It got down to -27C here awhile ago, but a mini-chinook blew in the other day, so it's been warmer lately (not like a more normal chinook, but after wearing 5 layers and freezing, I'll take it). We got to the plus side of the thermometer the day before yesterday.
