Oh, the weather outside is...

It has been so hot for so long in Arizona that people are getting burned from touching surfaces, such as car and home door handles, car seatbelts, and paved roads and sidewalks. The Arizona Burn Center in Phoenix has 45 beds, and all of them are in use. The center is overseeing treatment of more than 150 patients in total. Paved roads are reaching temperatures of 180F / 82C, hot enough to burn skin through clothing. People who lose consciousness because of the heat are then getting severely burned when they hit the ground. 2 people have died of burns related to the heatwave.

Current temp here is a mild 88F / 31C, with a 'heat index' (heat + humidity) of 94F / 34C. No idea what temperature the pavement here is, but I don't plan to find out.

I guess that means you don't need an actual frying pan if you want an egg?

It's been cool and rainy here for the last day or so, though it's been really changeable. One night I needed the fan, and the next night I was under my fleece blanket.

Been cold here lately. Currently 3 degrees Celsius. Should probably turn on some heating.

It is miserable here - actual high temperatures around 38C, heat index topped 43 today and is supposed to hit 45 tomorrow. Naturally this is band camp at my daughter's school. She plays the vibes for the field show, and the front ensemble has gotten to spend most of the time indoors this year, but its been hard on the guys trying to learn the motion on the field. Because of the heat they are only on the field in the mornings, but it's not cooling off much at night.

Hot and dry in NM.

"A 26.7-mile stretch of the Rio Grande is dry from San Acacia in Socorro County south, according to the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District. Jason Casuga, MRGCD’s chief engineer, said the drying of the river north of San Acacia could become a factor as early as next week."

Stormy and possibly tornado-y today, sitting in my basement until it let's up.

It's been chilly the past couple of days. Three layers and a fleece blanket last night, and Maddy opted to sleep under the blanket.

Reasonably warm day today didn't need the heater or heat pump until 5pm. Think it hit 13.

Maddening heat.

I hope it won't go on for much longer. Due to lack of wind, if even feels like 30 degrees for big parts of the night...

Read that 60.000 people may have died from heat-related causes last year in Europe. It may be even worse this year.

Very stormy right now lots of rain and lightning. No wind though, so I'm optimistic the power won't go out.

This has been a bad year in many parts of the world. The fires don't help. I could say something political about that, but I'd be violating my own rules for this thread, so I may say it in the Rants thread.

The heck of it is that this is only the first week of August. There's at least six more weeks before the temperatures should go down to a reasonable level. I'm hoping for an early frost here.

Mostly fine in Christchurch, cold in the mornings but no matter.

Apparently Whanganui in the North Island had a severe snow warning on the night before. Seems unusual.
