A couple of spiders. Just fussing around with.
I'm having problems with the shadow and the transparency though

I know I have a while to wait yet, but how's this for the start on my avatar? Paint is all I have to work with.

The problem with using paint is that when you save images as a .jpg there is no way of optimising the quality so that the picture is saved as close to 4k as possible although your picture doesn't seem to suffer much from a loss of quality.

I think that is probably because the .jpg I started with was small (about 280 pixels square) but excellent. I got it from the band's website. I didn't have to do too much shrinking. My screen claims I have it down to 70x70 and I'll believe that, but I have to hope the file size works right since in one place it says 2.7k and another says 4.0k.

Paint should shrink it to the right size... Sometimes windows doesn't report file sizes correctly but the smaller figure is probably correct.

What is the advantage of gif over jpg or the other way around?

Gifs support transparancy and can be animated, but are limited to 256 colours.

Jpegs can be full colour, and will (under most circumstances) have much smaller file sizes, but are "lossy" and will lose some of the finer detail at greater compression levels. Jpegs don't support transparency.

I am glad to know that as I was under the impression that jpg was better. But I guess it is like graphics, more fancy graphics are not necessarily better and more colors do not always a better picture make.

Thanks much

Jpegs are generally better since they allow a much greater quality with the only drawback with avatars that they cannot be made transparent but you will not see many gifs in the babe thread. Of course gifs are useful in animated avatars but they aren't allowed here and they do tend to become quite large as soon as you have several images that you want to rotate through.

May I have a transparency for this fellow?

Does anyone use Arcsoft Photo Studio, Paint Shop Pro, or IrfanView? I'm having problems with decreasing the size of an image while keeping the 70x70 pixel size.

I, personally, don't use any of those (I use photoshop 7) but I did dig up this link for Irfanview..

Looks pretty good ;)
