Olympics 2012 discussion

CHINES SUPERHUMANS will MURDER US ALL

I wasn't specific about in what way she was faster. I'm still correct.

About what? Yes, Ye swam the last 50m of the IM faster than Lochte, but that was a consequence of them having polar opposite race strategies. Lochte swam out extremely fast, well ahead of WR pace, to put distance between himself and his competitors, before fading extremely hard on the freestyle leg of his race and finishing well behind the WR line (which perhaps should've been a red flag predicting his subsequent failures in the 4x100 and 200 meter freestyle races). Shiwen conserved energy until the last leg, swimming in second before ending the race in fury (which is a valid strategy, since you can coast off your opponents' draft).

Even with that said, the difference between the two legs was only a fraction of a second.

And finally the first Gold for Germany!

Those Olympics do strange things to me. I did not care for this event until Saturday but am now watching sports I was never interested in (and will not be two weeks from now again) and I even root for the German team. I am quite excited and I just do not know why...

Just go with it. The capacity to occasionally lose yourself in something larger than yourself is healthy.

So what do you guys go by, gold medal count or total medal count?

Realistically neither. It's not truly representative of relative success. There is no way a gold in Laser class sailing is worth even a place in the final of the 100m sprint due to the sheer number of people worldwide competing in each event.

Likewise (sorry fellow Australians) certain sports like swimming and tae kwon doh are padded by the large number of medals on offer within the discipline.

But if forced to choose a barometer, I'll take the gold medal tally. As Ricky Bobby said, "If you ain't first, you're last"

However I reserve the right to completely change my opinion on this if Australia somehow miraculously beats GB in the total medal count.

Total count is the first thing I look at. The gold count is the tie breaker. And so far China owns the US in both!

GB is REALLY sucking, at least relative to my expectations. Perhaps the Aussies can beat them. That would be a national disgrace for GB. Is there any colony they can beat?

Australia has consistently topped GB in the medal tally for 30 years. Beijing was the exception. But yeah, GB will come good. Their pet events are in the second week.

I would rather Mo Farah wins one of the 5 or 10K than any number of rowing medals for GB, I think that track and field is the blue riband of the Olympics.

Thats not to say I don't wan't rowig golds but I put things in this order

Athletics then Swimming and Cycling, then any event that does not involve fighting or a weapon, then fighting and weapon events.

Maybe, but these are the GB Olympics. Supposedly the home team normally sees at 50% increase in medal count. I even saw some British predictions of finishing first in total medals.

I think we are probably not doing as well as hoped, but Bejing was a huge medal haul for us.

As the home team there are quite some events they are automatically qualified for. Australia had 433 athletes starting in Beijing and have 410 now. Great Britain had 312 but have 541 now. There are however many in sports where they have no chance to get a medal at all.

the official way is to use whatever method makes your country look best ;)

doesn't matter to me since we're still 0-0-0  (not that it's unexpected)

You're near the top of the standings for athletes ejected for racist tweets... Do they give medals for that? :p
