Overall Strategy Thread

I agree with parkin, an early move off the main island would be a good idea, especially if the resources on our home island are as limited as they currently appear. We'll want to make a strong push for the important central cities.

Yeah, we can probably afford to go Writing before Sailing. Indeed, we probably can't afford to delay Writing, because we'll need that Great Scientist ASAP. In a way I guess we are focussing on one sort-of-wonder: it's called the "Academy". ;)

You'd be hard pressed to get an Academy before Writing. :p COL -> Caste System I guess, but that'd take longer as Writing's a prereq for COL.

Sure, with the gold to boost our beaker output, I can see Writing first. So the tech path proposed is: finish Mining > BW > The Wheel > AH > Pottery > Writing > Sailing?

The minimal tech path to Writing/Sailing would be finish Mining > The Wheel > Pottery > Writing > Sailing, but we'd lose the ability to chop/whip, and the discount from AH on Writing.

Yes, an academy, but ONLY AFTER WRITING!

Sorry azz, I couldn't resist :p

If we could get an Academy before writing, I'd have no objections to that. :mischief:

Without formally being proposed, something along those lines. Maybe switching AH and Pottery around.

Out of interest I checked, and I'm fairly sure that's impossible to get a Great Scientist in ANY way without researching Writing first. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I figured:

- Need Writing for Library
- Need Writing for Code of Laws (Caste System)
- Need Writing for Astronomy (Observatory)
- Need Writing for Superconductors (Laboratory)
- Need Writing for Literature (Great Library), Paper (University of Sankore), and all other wonders producing Great Scientist points, including national and world wonders
- Need a Great Scientist in the first place to found the corporations which produce Great Scientist points

Is there any other way of generating a Great Scientist that I've missed?

True, I guess... but if you've got to do it yourself, there's no way but to research Writing, I believe. ;)

Wait, I've got it! Capturing a wonder like the Great Library would generate Great Scientist points for you. You wouldn't need to have researched Writing to get a Great Scientist then. ;)

So I guess war is the only way to do it without researching Writing. Of course, it's a hell of a lot easier to just research the tech in the first place. :p

This seemed like the best place for this as it concerns our overall strategy:

Well, I am quite interested on how this weird map turns out. The amount of times I've seen marble AND stone in my BFC I can probably count on both my hands. So needless to say our surprise at such a happy start this game. Though we suspected for balance that everyone had these in BFC.

HOWEVER... moving our warrior these last few turns has popped up many more of the same, yet nothing much else. The only way to make sense now is that everyone was given at least 2 monopolies. I'm not so sure that's a good thing, but time will see. I'm not complaining too hard, but it would be nice to at least have had the odd gold, silver, or gem somewhere. We have absolutely no commerce tiles and are not even financial here. Too much of the same thing isn't really nice tbh.

Or maybe I should keep my mouth shut until we finish scouting our landmass first.

So, is he playing games with us or do we think he is legit? Surely a marble/stone combo would be a silly map design.

Oh I thought that would go better in a new thread for Espionage. But your right he could be playing games. It doesn't sound balanced to not give them commerce resources.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who brought up the tech tree to see if an academy before writing could be done

regarding obsolete's message, perhaps he is just using marble / stone as a placeholder for the resources he actually has? I dont' know why he would want to give away what he has available this early, even if it was Marble/Stone.

He (his team) has clearly discovered that every team has 2 land based monopoly resources. His claim that they have both stone and marble is believable to most because everyone else is just discovering they have 2 land based monopoly units. 90% truth is the best lie.

He just wants to make everyone think long and hard before they commit to any wonders.

Yeah, I think it's misinformation.

Let's continue the discussion about obsolete's post here. :)

Is Cultural, diplomatic and space victories really impossible for us to do?

We don't have Vasselage but can we do perment alliances?

I think we have alot of silk to be trading in the future.

With the island as small as it is, yes, it's impossible to win culturally. It's too easy to raze coastal cities.

As I already said, you're not going to win diplo because you won't convince enough other teams to grab the votes.

And Space is very hard to win because of the ease of Spy sabotage.

I understand were going to avoid most wonders but I wondered about the Parthenon for the +50% GP points.
