Pacific/Oceania Mod- Discussion Thread

Thanks for the map (you'll be listed as a cocreator in the map pack)!
Pouakai, it'll need to be rescaled (it doesn't work in CivV as is, to tall and narrow).
I'll post a re-scaled version soon, see what people make of it.

Off topic: What's with all of the "content staff" labels?

Ah, ok.
Side question: how do you convert CivIV maps? If its easy, I might scan through the mod libraries here...

If you haven't done so, you need to go into Steam, go to library, and then click on the button (probably saying All Games) and select 'Tools', and install Sid Meiers Civilization V SDK.

That'll install worldbuilder, which will then appear in the taskbar and everything. Converting Civ4 maps is as easy as loading them. You can then edit them, stretch them, etc.

For example, given the long tall nature of my NZ map, it's been scaled to the max of 80 tall. You can however stretch it out as well (manually) to the full 128 wide. This seems to remove all placed resources though.

Lightly. I postponed the actual modding, because:
A) Switched over to Hawai'i, then took a short break from modding.
B) Not 100% sure I know what I'm doing there.
C) Also, only got 2-3 of the wonders listed out.

If anyone missed it, this mod has now recieved front page recognition!
Thanks to Camikaze, and anyone who may have been working behind the scenes, for posting that!

Once someone has a draft of the NZ map, I'll take a look at at it and make some suggestions.

Obviously the final version of the map couldn't be done until the economy and resources were designed and implemented, and after testing.

It might also be worth finalizing a list of major tribes and city states, as that would help on map design.

I'm of the opinion that gameplay is more important than geographic accuracy, so for example the important Northland, Wellington, Auckland and Waikato regions might be larger than life, while the South Island might be shrunk down. For the South Island, basically we'd want Marlborough, Nelson, a bit of west coast for greenstone, and a bit of space around Canturbury/Akaroa.

The original map in terms of resources:

A: Somewhat resource heavy
B: Using mineralogical surveys, growing regions etc, placement of luxuries and resources were determined
C: A few more arbitrary resources thrown in for geographical balance (i.e, major oil in places other than Taranaki, horses in places other than the small wild herd in the South Island).
D: Quite geologically accurate

Was there a link of specific resources to be included? I'd be happy to do this all over again if it's NZ specific resources.

If I were to cut it off, maybe just past Canterbury?

For the map for this mod, all the resources should be removed, because the resources and bonuses in the mod would be particular period-specific ones, the normal resources (oil, iron, coal, etc.) wouldn't show up in this era and so shouldn't be included, and a few other resources (sheep, cows) would probably be handled differently.

We don't have a list of resources yet. Fish, crayfish, greenstone, stone seem possible.
Sheep, cows and wheat make sense for Europeans, but not for Maori until very late. Similarly Kauri and Kauri gum.
But most other "normal" resources don't really make much sense.
Any ideas?

I think that a map should basically have the south island cut off in the SW corner of the map, so basically the map would go as far south as Banks peninsula on the east coast and greymouth/hokitika on the west coast. No need for anything south of that.

Geologically accurate is probably ok as a start, but I worry a little that the important areas won't be big enough, and that too much space will be taken up by various unproductive hill country blocks (Tararuas, etc.) and that there might not be enough land to make auckland/bay of islands into productive/important areas.

Another thing to think about is: what should the level of forest cover be? Do we want to strive for something semi-accurate, historically? I'm not sure what that would be for ~1800 start. AFAIK Canterbury had already been largely burned off by Maori by then, but most of the rest of the country is still probably forested. But that might not be much fun to play in.

[A thought; even though sheep/cows are bonus resources rather than luxuries or strategic resources, is it possible to have them tech-linked? That is, they could still be there, but they'd be revealed only by a tech that belonged to the European player, so the Europeans could still build pasture resources but the Maori players couldn't - or couldn't without some high level tech. Can a resource be revealed by either of two resources; so sheep could be revealed by a generic resource that the British player starts with *and* by a high-end tech available to Maori players? Livestock resources should be very valuable.]

Ok;
South Island has been discussed before. It will remain.
No new resources will be added - its a pain to do so.
Forest level will strive to be at the pre-colonial level.
Also, I'm going to use a different map, for a better fit, dimension-wise.

Removing resources is a horrible suggestion if you ask me. Gameplay > realism and removing the resources would remove the choice when settling land.

Since we can't have a map that's taller than it is wide, why not include the Chathams as well? Could have a Moriori city-state there.

Well, I'm turning NZ sideways. Rather than going North when moving "up", you'll be moving West.
