Pius, Episcopus, Servus Servorum Dei
The particular part of Our duty which is expressed in the words, strengthen your brethren, urges Us to do so. For at the present turbulent time, as much as ever, Satan has sought after us all in order to sift us as wheat.
In these days many are being deceived by what sets itself up as true knowledge, of which the Apostle Paul warned us of, an empty deceitful philosophy that is according to human traditions and the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.
This so-called philosophy that men now proclaim has nothing in common with true philosophy. For as Justin Martyr proclaims, it is Christianity that is the true philosophy and Christ is the one who enlightens everyman.
Every philosophy, then, which does not start from the foundation, which is Jesus, sets itself up against true philosophy. It is with great sadness that We see how many deceive themselves with this false knowledge, deceiving, if possible the very elect. These are the men which St. Jude warns us of, who defile the flesh, reject authority, and insult the glorious ones. Let Us then, not be carried by every wind of doctrine but protect what has been entrusted to Us.
Seeking then to feed the sheep which have been entrusted in Our care, We have decided to restore the Society of Jesus to its former station. They have proven in the past to be a shield to the Church, wise as serpents, able to handle the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. They have gained renown as scholars, known around the world for their commitment to true philosophy.
To lead this order We name Gabriel Lenkiewicz as Superior General of the Society of Jesus, a man whose intellect is only surpassed by his piety.
Let every faithful son of the Church receive the Society of Jesus with gladness. The one who receives them receives Me, the one who receives Me, the least of all the saints, in His Name, receives Him.
His Holiness, Pope Pius VI, writing from Rome, approved all the above decisions of this and command it to be sent far and wide.
