This was only true in the very earliest patches of Civ 4. Now the stacked coins are gold. A single round coin is commerce.

Ankara is in the heart of Mehmed's land. Almost exactly center. It is also the closest city of his to our hills/forest staging area.

I am happy that the city was kept so we can now airlift into it (one per turn). It takes six turns to get over via transport. I think we probably need at least three cities on the far continent. Right now, Timbuktu gives us one modern unit per turn and the other cities provide two to three. Three cities, three airlifts and we're in business.

SO ... we're at war across an ocean with a TON of fighters and a few carriers and one little city with tons of cultural pressure. We do have a pretty reasonable tech lead on them. We don't have tanks, but for some reason we have SAM infantry. Odd.... Oh well. We also have tech for bombers but we don't have any built.

One other item I'd like to point out. Djenne is labeled as a major commerce city. BUT....

it doesn't even have a library! That makes no sense. We have a huge lead and it doesn't really matter so much, but major commerce cities should at least have the basic commerce buildings. At higher levels, it'll matter.

Anyway, moving troops and such until ...

I razed the city. Unfortunately, that spurned a bunch (8-10ish) of resistors (riflemen in this case). I don't know if partisans are still a random event turned on in some games and not in others, but it'll make conquest extremely difficult, unless we capture cities and spawn a bunch of vassals across the ocean. I'd rather just go for domination.

I started moving on with a bunch more troops. But then everybody and their dog declared war on us. Apparently, Pacal had vassalized both the other two countries and he declared on us.

Waves of cavalry hit Ankara. We won a ton of combats, but nearly every single cavalry retreated (12 of 15 who lost), so we did very little permanent damage. It eventually fell.

    I was active elsewhere.

This formed our new beachhead city, where I could airlift troops. Not too long afterwards....

I captured Istanbul, too. Two cities. That left Mehmed with only one city. Well, he had one city for a brief period of time. Culture was a pain, but enough airplanes, even fighters, can do a lot of damage.

I burned it, since it was Mehmed's last city. It keeps the cost of our overseas cities low, and it didn't spawn resistors. We'll have plenty of chances to capture additional landing zones.

Ankara was extremely full of injured units. I kept fighters busy keeping the hps low, as well as sending a few new units at it every turn. I was killing a few units essentially every turn. But once Edrine fell, I could send a LOT of units at it. Thus...

I recaptured it. And in the process I killed probably 25-30 Mayan units, so most of the enemies on the far continent are now low on units. We should be able to move relatively quick now that we are better established.

Oh, and that's already started. Stuttgart was founded on some ruins, so I took care of it.

And here's the status of the far continent at this point -- or at least our little corner of it.

    That's about it.

No choppers yet, AK. But paratroopers (who were actually handy for a while) and SEALs (en route) are part of the plan. I'm still rather fond of tanks, tanks, bombers, tanks, and a side of tanks (with infantry to hold cities after the tanks roll).

Frederick -- his land surrounds nearly all of what used to be Mehmed's land. Though Sitting Bull is an easy target, too. We kind of have to just fight them all. We don't really have a choice.

Timbuktu should build and airlift a tank every turn. That'll help a ton. Washington, Houston, and New York also have airports. Once we get some culture into our newest conquests, we can either build an airstirp (which can accept an unlimited number of airlifts) or an airport (same thing) in one of those cities.

We have a spy in one of Frederick's cities, but our destroyers can knock down the city defense of any coastal city (which Sitting Bull has more of) really quickly.

Pacal is the biggest threat, but we're just not set up to attack him at all right now. :(

Turns out computer time disappeared for arkenstone after that post. He's played 3 or 4 turns or so. Not sure we'll be able to get the rest in anytime soon. Next weekend looks pretty brutal, too, so should we just post what he has?

arkenstone left out at least two critical details.

First is that he only got 8 turns in. So the save is a bit premature. We're taking off for the weekend, though, so this is all he had time for.

Second, he forgot to attach a save, so I'm taking care of that detail for him. :) We seem to be doing extremely well in the war (tanks vs. grenadiers is a bit of a mistmatch!), so details are probably not critical. I didn't watch him play, so I don't really know what's going on. Rex, you'll have to figure it out from context. Sorry. :(

So I've played two turns in about 90 minutes. I'd like to make a proposal that we move to five turns per set during modern combat.

I played seven turns, bringing us up to a quasi-round number. I do recommend each of us taking five-turn sets while at war. These seven took about four hours total. But I'm slow.

To the game, I wanted to take stock of a few things. How are we doing? Well, we're at least double the power of the three remaining civs combined. That's good. However, our tech lead is shrinking.

We're still in the lead and our bombers and fighters still strike without fear of SAM. But on the ground, we face marines and tanks. Not that that matters. We have enough military and production to afford sending outdated troops in at 50% odds. Though, while we have air superiority, we doing no such thing.

In other news, Fred's all grown up.

Guided missiles, tanks, and bombers. Fortunately, he's stupid and but his missile and more than one bomber in that unguarded fort. Free killin' for us.

This is why I decided to abandon (for the most part) the Native American campaign and turn all of our tanks toward Germany. (I still sent a large stack of cavalry and infantry into Native America--don't worry.)

And, I didn't want to waste the setup Arkenstone gave me.

That gave us a great general (or we already had him--not sure), who I used to make an academy in Washington.

    Fission came in next turn...

And I went for computers to open up robotics and (after superconductors) genetics. Computers will come in on the turn after Justin begins. I recommend going after robotics to build mechanized infantry. Still, we're starting to wallow in our filth everywhere.

Still, had to get rid of that Panzer, first. (and a couple of other nuisances)

This gave us another great general, who I turned into a great medic.

I chose an outdated unit for two reasons. 1) I like my medics to be non-combat units. If I make my beefiest unit a medic, he's likely to be chosen in defense and we risk losing him. 2) Great General promotions are free, so we can upgrade him to an infantry for free, if we want to--which I don't.

Anyhow, I airlifted him to Istanbul (where I cash-rushed an airport) and he's now on the front, healing our CR3 tanks. (there's got to be an "awesome" smiley on this board somewhere.)

Next up, Pacal has decided to get uppity.

    But we have air superiority.

I decided not to attack because I still didn't have overwhelming ground superiority. I think we can afford to take our time if it means keeping troops alive. During my set, I lost only one offensive battle (at 97% odds). That was because I was very careful only to attack after softening defenses and air striking every last thing in sight. (I did lose two troops in defense and had two fighters shot down.)

Either way, Pacal slunk his stack back to Hamburg to heal. I never gave him the chance.

In the meantime, Pacal also provided some irritation on our mainland.

I've taken out everything (there were others), but we need to build two work boats. Also, Sitting bull managed to get a caravel up to our mainland, so we probably have a spy nearby.

Moving on, operation "right turn clyde" saw our tanks outside of Berlin in three turns.

I used a spy to take the defense down to 0% because I had most of our air power to take down Pacal's stack and this is where I lost two fighters. Germany has fighters of her own.

The spy allowed me to take (poorly defended) Berlin easily. I examined the city.

Remember what I said in the BCs about not building wonders because you can just take them?

Next turn, Sitting Bull, of all people, dropped a stack next to Istanbul. Shooting horses with tanks is fun.

This was a small delay en route to the real prize, Pacal's stack, holed up in Hamburg.

I managed to kill everything except one stupid marine because I ran out of troops. Oh well, next turn.

And Fred gets five free infantry

We earned a great spy this turn. Istanbul has our most espionage, but that's because it's running five spies who can't work land.

Don't know what to do with him.

In other news, I've finally realized my dream and we can circumnavigate our own continent now.

Cleaning up lose ends, mostly the free infantry from Hamburg.

Be warned, Justin, our carrier fleet is exposed. Pacal has a destroyer sitting in one of the northern German cities. That destroyer has now taken out two destroyers who were guarding our carrier fleet (and sneaked back to the city each time). Do not let our carriers go into the norther gulf without escort.

War weariness is up to 10. I was building jails, but we need to address it. Option one is peace. Last I checked, pacal will only give us gold. Option two is nationhood. Three is to slug through it. I do enjoy being able to cash rush airports in conquered cities.

We have Cristo Redentor. So we can cash-rush occasionally and still drop into Police State for war weariness fighting. Unless they've completely nerfed CR. At least we have options! :D
