Same here! The game used to simply dissappear and the desktop would suddenly and smoothly appear. This time, after the patch install, things seemed to go fine.

Then....................suddenly a black screen with cursor on a black screen. It would move for me, the music played, but when the black screen dissappeared, I beheld the desktop in 800x600, which was not my setting. And too, it appeared to look like it was in "safe" mode, as the graphics were screwed up.
I also have the exact same problem. Sucks because I now have to reboot every 20 minutes instead of simply restarting the game from Windows.

It's a nice effort, and the work shows. For me load times are much faster, performance overall is much better, no more slothful rapid-screen-scroll when switching between units, and periodic slowdowns seem much diminished.

However, about every 2 or 3 turns something happens that causes the game to lock for about 15 or 20 seconds. When it unlocks, things are smooth as glass again.

I'm going back to playing the WWII Whole World mod in Civ3 while I wait for the next patch. The game is more playable than it was, but the consistency of these interruptions is too much for me. I suspect it has something to do with the resource problem somebody mentioned a few posts before mine, because many times when these freezes happen, the screen display reduces to the underlying map only, showing no units, cities, improvements or yield display icons.

slower than a turtle walking backwards on a treadmill

Ok had time to check a few saved games (modded and unmodded) all worked fine...new game ,noticable speed increase.
Tested with AA back on..all seems good so far...........

Hurray, my crash to desktop problems got replaced with a crash to desktop plus having my resolution and colors distorted, and having to reboot. :(

LOL, same thing happened to me!

I got to 3% and it stopped... I canceled, restarted the game, tried again, and again, 3% and it stops... my luck.

Use the download that is being ofered through RS.

Just played my first game in 1.09. I didn't really notice any substantial diffrences. It seemed alittle faster but not much. Everything else seems to be the same but I'll have to wait and see what things are like near the end game.

All the problems with ingame movies have been fixed for me... everything seems to run perfectly... The only thing is that since I installed the patch there is a pop up message on civ4 startup that says my machine doesn't meet the minimum requirements for this game.... It doesn't seem to matter though.

Its a bug.. my machine is well above all the requirements.

This looks good! Foreign advisor screen has been cleaned up a bit, and now you get a sound effect when triggering a revolution (and coming back out of anarchy). Works with my mods too.

Great, game runs fine, install patch now I get 'Initialize renderer failed'
X800XL P4 3.0c ASUS P4C800-E - nice patch there guys :(

yay, finally. now maybe i'll actually be able to get through a whole game without having to walk away and eat something for 10 minutes while waiting for the computer to finish processing a turn.

On my desktop PC, the patch doesn't seem to have changed much. However, I was hoping that I could install CIV4 on my laptop, which only has a Radeon Mobile 7500 - well, install I could, but afterwards I had a very weird mixture of sometimes black terrain and sometimes "somehow visible" terrain that flickkered in and out, while at the same time the mouse pointer was flickering nervously and I had several graphical glitches.

Damn it, it's a frigging TURN-BASED STRATEGY GAME, it can't be that hard to have it display a simple MAP that is not even real 3D!

Edit: The imcoptenece of Firaxis in graphics things is outright amazing - turns out that the flicker problem was caused by me having chosen my laptop's native resolution (1400 x 1050). When I switch to 1024 x 768, the flickering is gone, but of course I have a softened-up (because of interpolation) screen. Is it really THAT hard? Why offer a screen resolution in the pulldown menu if the game isn't able to handle it correctly? Argh!

After buying from Direct2Drive I have to wait for the patch. I downloaded just fine but when I try to install, it says that I don't have the game installed. So I'll have to wait for Direct2Drive to come out with a special patch. Bummer.
