PBEM: A Soaring Spirit

According to the documentation that comes with the scenario, tech trading is against house rules.

I'm pretty sure this is the best information we have on the riot factor:

https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/hapiness.322213/#post-9212476

You may want to read the whole thread, but I think the linked post contains most of the information.

Of particular interest is

CiOw is not actually the number of cities owned. Rather, it is increased by 1 every time a city is built by the player, and is decreased by 1 every time a city owned by the player is destroyed. It is also reduced by 1 when a city is disbanded (for any cities processed after the city that was disbanded). CiOw does not change when cities are captured or lost. Finally, CiOw is set to the number of cities currently owned by the player each turn, after all the cities are processed. Essentially, if you capture cites, you will get a turn of production without them adding to your unhappiness; but if you lose cities they will still contribute to your unhappiness during your next turn’s production.

I have just double checked the house rules and you're quite right, tech trading is forbidden. I have no idea why I would have made that a rule and I propose we ditch it. Sharing knowledge seems to me a totally historically accurate concept. I am more than happy to gift any techs I have developed unfairly to the other nations to make amends for my transgression.

No news

The Corinthian-Ionian League shares the following technologies:

Athenians - Amphora & Stonecutting
Sparta - Polis & Stonecutting
Phoenicians - Polis & Stonecutting
Etruscans - Polis & Stonecutting

I think the science bonus from trading is meant to represent the flow of knowledge between civilizations that have regular contact. It is unfortunate that the bonus is not limited to when your civ is researching a tech that the destination civ already has.

I would prefer not to have tech trading for a couple reasons. The first is that we would progress through the tech tree too quickly. Trade should yield 1 tech per turn, which is already quite the pace. Tech trading would double this already quick rate. I should disclose that I think Twin Monarchy will strengthen other civs much more than my own, and I was planning on having some time to benefit from my relatively compact holdings first.

The second reason is simply that I don't want to go to the trouble of activating the cheat menu every turn to facilitate the exchange.

If Northerner prefers allowing tech trading, I'll go along with it.

In any case, as long as the Athenians still discover Polis on the upcoming turn (which shouldn't be a problem) I'll consider the matter resolved

OK, we'll let Ingvar cast the deciding vote. If he decided to keep the no tech trading rule I will undo all trades including between the Ionians & Corinthians. I really should have clarified all this before doing any tech exchanges (a couple of turns back) but I genuinely didn't remember that house rule. I was thinking of the normal Civ2 game where you can exchange technologies with the AI Civs. A bit embarrassing being that I designed the scenario

Alternatively, if Ingvar votes against tech trading we could leave the current trades in place and just forbid any more going onwards. That would be simpler, but I will go with the majority on that. I gave the two techs to each human nation as an act of compensation for breaking the house rule. I do see your point about the pace of technological progress being sped up too much.

If Northerner really wants everything undone, then I will support him in that. Personally, I'm willing to trust that the two technologies is adequate compensation and go from there if it will keep the game moving.

I have had a look at undoing the tech trades and it is a bit more complicated than it may seem. As all of the nations are at roughly the same level of technological (5-6) research I propose we carry on with the current save. I have removed Stonecutting from the Ionians (now on 5 techs) and the Corinthians are also on 5 so I have not gained any unfair advantage over other nations when the two compensation techs are taken into account.

I hope this is acceptable and that we can move on.

I support forvidding tech exhange and otherwise stating course.

My computer seems to have broken down, it gives me a warning about a broken fan and refuses to boot. I will have a go at fixing it tonight, some screw may have gone loose. I haven't really thought through what I'll have to figure out if that doesn't work. I'll keep you guys updated, sorry for the time this is eating up.

No worries. Hope you get it sorted. If it's just a replacement fan you need that should be fairly easy to sort. Perhaps a friend or relative may have an old PC that you can cannibalize. If it's a laptop that might be a bit trickier. Best of luck!

Are you happy to carry on with the compensation techs or do you want me to undo all of the tech trades already made?

It's working again! I just needed to find out how to take the case apart, then blow some dust out of the cpu fan! Strange thing was, it was but a tiny ball of dust that brought everything to a scheeching halt. I'll get to playing the turn in a bit!

And with regards to the technology trading debacle, I'd rather we don't trade technologies, I'm siding with the McMonkey of yore who wrote the original house rules. I choose to believe the current state of affairs is not too generous to any single party!

Glad to hear you fixed the issue. I tend to hoover the inside of my desktop pc periodically as it is a magnet for dust.

So it's decided. We'll play on with the last save I posted. Apologies again for the mix-up. Luckily no real harm done..

Etruscans: Raze the Lydian city of Destroy! and get 4g.

World Events: A new Strategos has risen to lead the Athenians to victory.

No Athenian News.

No news of the Spartans.

Segesta captured. Entella besieged. A Minor City unit on the cities other side could capture it before I do. I hope that won't screw any game mechanics up.

Athenian Strategos trains his troops by fighting in the hills near Samos, then gets exited and captures the city of Samos (but some resistance remains in the hills). Due to the nearby troops, I replaced the walls immediately with the cheat menu. The Athenians offer to give Samos to the Ionians in exchange for the island of Andros and the right to settle (264,96).
