Carthage will be closed to traders for one year, starting now. Of course, those that would rather get back on their ships and head back home can try their luck on the black market - but should know the returns might be less than usual. (Carthage is currently working towards increased population, trade is not nearly maximized.)

Thanks for the warning. So we can trade the turn after this but the revenues we can expect may be reduced.

I'm not an expert on the calculations for trade revenues but I was surmised when a merchant got the same amount of gold for a non demanded commodity as another one did for an in-demand one. I don't think there was a huge disparity between the trade output of the two source cities. Perhaps I have missed a key point, but I would have expected the in-demand goods to get a significantly higher return. Both traders arrived on the same turn and I knew from my notes (based on other commodities produced by cities that turn) that one item was in demand. Perhaps the first delivery changed the demanded items' list somehow. I'm not complaining, just making an observation.

Athens commissions the Great Academy.

Trade payouts max out at 2/3 the science cost (or at around 200g if the cost is very low). Since Carthage has so much trade, and tech costs are still quite low, it should be fairly easy to max out payments from even moderately distant deliveries.

You had to post the turn just as I was going to go to bed didn't you  How many late, late nights have I had over the years due to Civ2 I wonder?

I could leave it to the morning but the 'one more turn' factor is too strong. Best put the kettle on!

You still use a kettle? I have a Hamilton Beach 12-cup coffee-brewer with a timer. Saves on that metallic-aftertaste. :P

My landlady provided an electric kettle to her tenants and I saw at least one in the grad student offices at my university, so I don't think they are that rare in Canada. That said, I don't spend my time figuring out how others make coffee, so they may, in fact, be rare and I only noticed because my chinese roommate made tea so often with it.

Very sorry for how late I am. I have some problems at work, I hope to sort things out in the morning.

Tea is a national obsession here, but in recent decades coffee has been making significant gains, thanks to the proliferation of Starbucks & Costas. I wonder what the ancient Greeks beverage of choice was ;)
Wine, by all records and references...
