PH03: Happy Little Wonderland

its right ya lush! robo-tripper

i will play this now tomorrow night.

Just going thread to thread and reading all these comments is highly amusing to me  But i had a small personal emergency these past couple days and will be OoP for sure again Monday and Tuesday (est).

I'm going to play today for sure but i'm not sure exactly when. It'll depend on coordinating my households schedule and w/several kids :D however, I am honorbound to convert our empire in to the Happy Little Wonderland we all know it will be!

Did i mention STate Property and Mills and Workshops up at low-hammer citeis yet?? Seriously, did I? I'm too lazy to look to check . . .

Okay, not much happened besides building religious stuff..well, that's not it . . .
Rosalind Franklin (GS) is born in Moscow!

I build an Academy with her. Boy, culture output there is LOW! We need to remedy that soon.

Also, at Rostov, i decide to finally chop a wonder as the sign instructs me to:
1210sankorewt7.jpg

I figure with the Minaret and this will be a nice combo.

When Civil Service comes in, I spend the turn in anarchy to revolt:

It immediately helps out our finances.

Nothing much happened on my turns until the end with the completion of the Spiral Minaret:

And the spread of the Book.

That's really pretty much it for now. Here's a picture of our lands.

We still need one more city, and i flailed in trying to remember to count our temples, cathedrals and culture...but i did do wonders!

Moscow: Great Wall
St Pete: Oracle
Novgorod: Hanging Gardens
Rostov: Sankore in 2 turns
Yaroslavl: none
Yekaterinburg: Sprial Minaret
Yakutsk: none
Sakae: none

Hopefully nothing serious and all is well in pholkworld!

Ask and ye shall receive. I won't even take the time to crop the screenshots.

Fairly uneventful turnset, so I'll forego the turn-by-turn descriptions. Highlights were:

1310: Brennus came calling, and wanted Divine Right for free. Um...no. However, I will make the following deal:

Didn't particularly need HBR, but Optics lets us find the other continent (where Wonder Monkey has been very busy), and the money gets us to Liberalism faster. We've already got the Minaret, and Versailles is not terribly useful, so no harm there.

We also trade copper to Brennus for fish and 6 gpt. (why do the AIs still want copper so badly when they've got iron?) Nobody will trade us Engineering for anything.

1320: Well...since we built a Jewish Synagogue in Novgorod, I guess it's our third culture city. This'll be our Hermitage city, I guess, and we may just cottage over all the mines on grassland hills.

Oh, and we built this eyesore:

Now we have six cities with the required wonder built.

1360: Russians become less woefully ignorant.

Start on Philosophy (required for Liberalism). Queue up some Universities, too.

Also launch our fist Caravel and send it east in search of Wonder Monkey Island.

1370: Hannibal builds Versailles. Good for him.

1390: More learnin':

Start Liberalism.

1400: Not much happens, but here's the wrapup.

We have Christianity and Judaism in all our cities, Islam in six of the eight. We have six Jewish Temples and two Synagogues (St. Pete & Novgorod). Four Christian temples, three more due within 4 turns, and one Cathedral (Moscow). We have three Islamic Temples, and no Mosques yet. Universities are under construction in all three culture cities, and all three have Lib & Theater.

For what it's worth, our three culture cities stack up this way:

Moscow: 43 culture/turn, 2572 total. Raw commerce 57 (89 w/ Bureaucracy).
St Pete: 51 culture/turn, 3740 total. Raw commerce 38.
Novgorod: 34 culture/turn, 1339 total. Raw commerce 27.

Yaroslavl' should get our next GP - about 75% Artist & 25% Engineer (IIRC - didn't write it down). Liberalism is due in 5, running at 90% science. This will clean out the treasury, too (-48/turn, with 233 in the vault).

Oh, and there's a barb city on the coast by Moscow now. I have a mini-stack over there, and a couple of Maces on the way to help out. We can take it as our ninth if it's grown a bit.

And, of course, the save.

Well, great playing, modulator. For the first time, i'm begining to feel good about securing the variant and winning...until i saw our culture generation in our Big 3!! geez louise!

we definitely should go on to the late-game culture wonders (Eiffel, Holly, RnR, & Brdwy) for the extra boost and think about some cheap-ass wonders for our last 3 cities. Also, should we consider farming over St Pete and Moscow and running ARtists there for more culture? Finally, Ozbenno, could you run 100% culture and see what the numbers are for us culture-wise??

It does look pretty anemic at the moment, doesn't it?

@Pholk - I think we'll get more culture from mature cottages than from Artists. So I figure we're going to want to get Democracy (for Emancipation and the cottage-growth bonus) and cottage over everything in Moscow, St. Pete, and Novgorod. I think that Rostov or Yaroslavl' might have been better choices for the third culture city (Rostov in particular is all grassland = lots of cottages), but I think it'll work out OK in the end.

On the other hand, this'll be my first culture win, so what do I know?

I do have a screen-shot of the current state at 100% culture. Keep in mind that this is without most of the culture-multipliers in place. Still sobering though.

Thoughts on culture: researching to get advanced wonders is less efficient than stopping science and putting those coins directly into culture. However, if we need wonders for our satellites, then we need to continue research. Also, religion is a far better way to crank culture than any wonders. Check out the culturemonger game. All we did was religion and we won an all-peace domination.

At this point, I think we need to stress engineers, rather than artists so we can rush wonders in the remaining cities.

And yes, Versailles is important. Any wonder we've already researched is one we don't need to waste financing beakers on. Start Versailles somewhere and put a bunch of engineer specialists in our next GP city.

Well, since Hannibal built Versailles on my 7th turn, I'd advise not trying for it at this point. ;)

Is that what you meant by "1370: Hannibal builds Versailles"? See, I was sort of confused. I thought you were talking about building Versailles in a Freudian sense. Which, of course, means that Hannibal has attempted to escape the reality of life's pressures by ignoring them and diddling 'is mum.

Sorry for the confusion. I now know to take you waaaaay more literally than I previously had been.

Wait, I don't suppose this means that Khan *didn't* adopt Brennus as his Id and take up hanggliding lessons?

those numbers look better. As long as we can get it to around 500 per turn, I'll feel all right. In my last culture game as Louis XIV, I was getting around 800 or more per turn which was a personal best for me: 3 religions + late-game wonders. I won in 1962 which is not too bad for culture @ monarch i think.

Now let's see. Are we ready to start?

Beer? Check.
Chips? Check.
The Save? Check.
A plan on what to do when we hit Liberalism in 5? Ummm...

We are up against a bulldog called Winnie. Trade him Music, Philosophy and Drama for Guilds and some loose change.

Novgorod - University - Islamic Mosque

Bugger me with a fish fork!

Even worse, look who beat us there! Hang our heads in shame.

I trade Education and Philosophy to the Big Fella (aka KK) for Banking, Engineering and change.

After Liberalism hits I set sail for Nationalism. We need to hit up the Taj Mahal straight away after this (probably in Sakae) for wonder #7.

I revolt into Free Speech, Caste System and Mercantilism.

St Petes - University - Christian Cathedral

I trade Hannibal a junk tech for his world map (as he was first to circumnavigate) and see that Cyrus is out there as well. I end up meeting him last turn and he's the most backward of the AI. I trade him Literature for cash and then beg 2gpt from him.

City #9.

I want to start National Epic in Moscow but park in into building culture so we can have a rational and adult conversation about it and then Rex can tell us what to do!

Culture values at 0% culture

And at 100%

And we need 3 more wonders in Yakutsk, Sakae and Cuman. Our next GP will be in Yaroslavl, most likely Artist but maybe Prophet. Need to get a forge going here.

Nationalism in 4 will give us Taj Mahal (chop and go crazy) in Sakae. Democracy, Statue of Liberty and Communism, Kremlin. So we've still got a ways to go. We've really got to make sure we get these.

Techs neeed Nationalism, Constitution, Democracy, Gunpowder (can trade for this now), Printing Press (Tokogawa probably took this from Liberalism but good luck trying to get it of him), Chemistry, Scientific Method and Communism!!!!

nice playing Ozbenno, and i agree with your rationale for the techs. That matches well if we wanted to swap to a workshop/watermill based production city @ out last couple cities.

well, let's see what happens from this point, eh? Not too much further until the finish line, i think.

Ok...since I'm at work and can't check, someone please fill me in: Do Sankore and the Minaret stop working when we switch to Free Religion? Or do we get bonuses from ALL religious buildings (not just Jewish ones)?
