PH03: Happy Little Wonderland

The only time I ever use IE to view the site is when I run across the occasional post where the pics don't show up under Firefox (happened a couple of times with photobucket pics :dunno:). Firefox never gives me the ad either.

FWIW, I've been taking notes on paper while playing, then writing the report afterward (like at work, where I can't play anyway). Doesn't slow me down much, since I can play almost exclusively with the mouse and write with the other hand.

I should also point out that nobody's playing until Oz posts the save file.

Well done Zophos, at least one of you noticed my, ah deliberate  , non-posting of the save file.

In any case, now that I've had a nap and the meds have kicked in I was going to actually post what happened (unless it was all that dream I had).

We researched Code of Laws, Drama and we're on Paper. I traded KK for Metl Casing as well.

We're making a run for Hanging Gardens at Novgorod (due in 3).

The second and third piccies show the wonderful effect of The Great Wall. Unescorted settler meets barb archer. No worries, found a city and hey presto, instant barb removal.

We're now up to 8 cities, with the capture of the barb city. We've got plenty of room for the 9th on the coast.

I think Yaroslavl is likely to be 3rd culture city. I'd start theatres in all 3 culture cities (Moscow and St Petes as well).

Moscow building a forge, employ an engineer here when finished. Bext GP will come from here and we want a GE, so I've fired the scientists.

Worker due in Rostov in 2, as said before, this could be a great GA farm. Start farming the heck out of everything here, switch to Caste System and run GAs.

Wonder watch, we've got 3. Hanging Gardens should make 4. Yekateringburg could make a run at Spiral Minaret soon I think.

Research, a run at Liberalism might be on the cards. KK has paper (must have burned a GS for it as I'd only just traded him Alphabet) and a mystery civ has philosophy, so it'll be a race but we should be right. Other techs we may need are Banking (for mercantilism - free GAs) and Printing Press for some cash, maybe stretch to Democracy. Once we hit Liberalism in any case, we should think about ramping the culture slider.

The save

OK, now to really expose my techinical know-how. Who or what is a Firefox? I thought it was a Clint Eastwood movie?!?!
It's an alternative web browser built by the guys at Mozilla (nee Netscape). It's free, runs on Windows and practically everything else, and anyone can write extensions & plugins for it (so the freeware community has probably already made whatever you're looking for). It also handles tabbed browsing elegantly.

Oh, and since the virus makers write primarily for Internet Explorer...no worries. I have mine set up to ignore 99% of all web ads, tracking cookies, pop-ups, stealth spyware links, etc. And I don't even have to think about it - it just works.

You can get it at http://www.getfirefox.com. 'nuff proseletyzing. On with the game. :)

well, depending on when Imhotep returns for the weekend and whether or not Rex can play, perhaps Immy could take when he checks back in if Rex can't play ~

I'll be playing Menu Surprise over at daviant minds tonight, so I won't grab this 'til Monday. If Timmy can take it, that's fine with me.

Again a nice and quiet turnset. We made some good progress towards our goals. First of all we landed this beauty:

We got a lot of redshirts through this, but that soon was cured because the Calendar Resources are now coming online.

Then an ugly dude showed up and wanted to learn the lore of writing poetry and such and said he would teach us the way to ride horses in return.

I declined, sensing that we can make this trade later on still when we want. Instead I tried to get this one:

He didn't want to either. Jerk.

But there are wiser people in this world:

Not bad for 3 older techs. I made this trade for two reasons: First of all I feel far from safe with our military as it is. All we have is Warriors and Archers - not too impressive. We should get some real defense because our neighbors are making me feel anxious. The Khan doesn't like us anyway, and Hannibal is only pleased with us too. Those AI take their chances when they see it. Better not giving them any. The second reason:

We have a lot of land to improve and resources to connect. Serfdom will speed that up significantly. I swapped to Hereditary Rule too, the Happiness will come in handy.

We will get a GP out of Moscow in a few turns, hopefully it will be a Great Engineer to rush the Spiral Minaret. The odds are 53% for that, I tried to increase this by running a Engineer at Moscow once the Forge had finished.

So much for now...

Imhotep

Hey, despite teh  's a wonder's a wonder, right?

Nice turns Imhotep ~ you really ARE a builder...i htought that was just an excuse for your poor play at warring :p

:culture: The colors of the rainbow so pretty and the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands
Saying how do you do
What they're really saying
Is I love you

I see babies cry
I watch them grow and
They'll know much more
Then I'll never know

And I think to myself
What a wonderful world :culture:

What a wonderful world, indeed. But then I opened up this piece to crap game and realized how much we suck. Here it is, 1100 after doughnuts, and we still haven't killed anybody. :gripe: Seriously, look at this:

One stinking panther? Good lord you hippies aggravate me.

Anyhow, let's see how we're doing on the wonder front. Cities with wonders include Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Novgorod, and Yaroslavl. Cities without are Rostov, Yekaterinburg, Yakutsk, and Sakae. Currently we can build a spiral minaret and a few national wonders (but those don't count). In one turn we'll have paper and then we'll be able to build the university of sankore.. Yay!. Press enter .

paper0000.jpg

It's now 1110 and I think I remember something about Timmy wanting to research civil service but didn't someone else say we wanted philosophy? I just don't remember any more. Looking at the religions screen, I see that Taoism was already founded so screw philosophy. I start on civil service, due in thirteen. Mongolia adopts vassalage and serfdom and the Celtics' golden age has ended. Saint Patrick has been born in a faraway land. Press enter.

You have constructed an Islamic temple in Yaroslavl. And there was much rejoicing. I began a Jewish temple. Christopher Columbus has been born in a faraway land. Press enter

It's 1130 and Saint Petersburg has just constructed an Islamic temple. Being the cesspool that it is, I started it on an aqueduct. Novgorod has just finished a forge and I started on a long bow. Yekaterinburg Finishes a Jewish temple and I started it on the spiral minaret, due in twenty. The Kong Miao has been built in a faraway land . When Rostov done with its forge, I recommend starting it on either Versailles or the university of Sankore. Rostov is our city with the most hammers that doesn't have a wonder or isn't already building one. Press enter.

Brennus Wants to trade his fish for our copper but I don't like that deal and I tell him to piss off . He is willing To trade us machinery but he wants music and divine right. No thank you . I then offer him music for compass and he accepts. I didn't think he would go so I'd missed the screen shot.

compass0000.jpg

Press enter.

Novgorod Finishes a long bow and I started on a catapult. Press enter

Novgorod Finishes the catapult and I started on a courthouse. Congratulations the burgeoning Russian empire now holds 5 million souls! Larger cities allow more citizens and specialist, increasing our productivity! Very well, Carry on then. Press enter.

Yakutsk has constructed a barracks and I'd like to work on an aqueduct next. However that city has now been severely cramped thanks to Hannibal.

shangian0000.jpg

I think that in order to pay for this offense, Hannibal ought to forfeit every one of his cities. What say the group? To add insult to injury, we had two workers building a plantation on the dies he just stole from us so pretty much we just chopped his jungle for him. I'm trying to build a road to connect some of our cities. Yes, we have trade routes but it takes for *ever* to get troops anywhere. I look around through the tech trading screen and realize everyone has machinery when we don't. Mongolia offers us the best deal of machinery for music and drama. I tried to get him to sweeten it by throwing in horse back riding but he had none of it. Instead I accepted the trade he offered.

bigtrade0000.jpg

machinery0000.jpg

Press enter

1180 and we have constructed a Jewish temple in Yaroslavl. I started on a courthouse and in Moscow, Rosalind Franklin, a great scientist has been born.

scientist0000.jpg

The light bulb is 1716 beakers toward education. Or we could put an academy in Moscow, a city giving us 25 beakers per turn. I vote for the academy but let the group decide. Press enter.

In 1190, saint Augustine has been born in a faraway land we also just hooked up the bananas near Saint Petersburg, so that's one extra health for each city on the trade network. Press enter

At 1200, Saint Petersburg finishes its aqueduct and I started on a theater. Novgorod finishes a courthouse and I started on a Jewish monastery.

That's it folks. That's the end of my turn set.

Nice playing, Rex. Way to build with ferocity! :goodjob:

I want to make sure we get organized a bit on the Culture front. to that end:
Cities:
Moscow: ?? temples; (wonder)
Saint Petersburg ?? temples; (wonder)
Novgorod ?? temples; (wonder)
Yaroslavl ?? temples; (wonder)
Rostov ?? temples; (no wonder)
Yekaterinburg ?? temples; (no wonder)
Yakutsk ?? temples; (no wonder)
Sakae ?? temples; (no wonder)

Culture Cities:
Moscow: ?? Cathedrals, ?? cpt, ?? total culture
St Petersburg: ?? Cathedrals, ?? cpt, ?? total culture
???: ?? Cathedrals, ?? cpt, ?? total culture

Did we ever decide on the third??

[ed. note: obviously, it need work. please fill in at your leisure and remembrance. I will take up the baton once it's my turn.

A further thought for the late game: swapping to workshops and watermills at our wonderless cities, and revolting to State Property to try and hurry up production. I'm thinking we have to aim for the late-game wonders just to satisfy the variant!

Anything else?? Oh, war with Hannibal ~ do we need that to get a 9th city? if no, then i say no. otherwise . . . :hammer:

if and only if we DO end up attacking, and if we have a shot at LIberalism, then I say we use the GS for Education, and head that for a Liberal-Nat'l sling for Cossacks.

now, anything else?? ahh crap . . .

As for pholk's large, rambling and ? filled post:

I nominated Yaroslavl as our third culture city to a huge round of indifference  . Rostov might also be a contender.

Rex and Imhotet seemed to have some temple builds. I also have vague recollections of a couple of cathedrals being built in Moscow and St Petes.

Do a stock-take in your upcoming turns and we'll try to keep it updated as we move through.

The GS should be used on Education to bump towards liberalism (a needed tech). I'd use it to take Nationalism so we could build Taj Mahal. I'd then only research non-built wonder techs and start sliding up the Kultcha.

No, but we need it to satisfy my sense of vengence and your panty-wearing lack of honor.
Dude...that's such Age of Pisces thinking! Peace is where it's at, man. Like, we could just build some truly awesome wonders in Yakutsk and, like, set up some coffee shops with poetry readings and some little jazz quartets and a bong or two, and I bet the Shangianians would just come over and join the love-in before long.

Far out.

(Translation: We ought to be able to win a culture war out in the jungle, and just disband Shangian when it flips. Ninth city goes on the coast, as we've discussed.)

I hear that, dude [pimp] ~ :smoke:

no war for panties! I'll dbl check things on my turn, and I was 80% sure we wanted Novgorod simply b/c of the amt of hammers there*. Build Culture really is a great option now that they've changed things a bit, so that'll work out well.

* edit: for grammar
