PH05: THe Honorable Emperor Spaceman

Zophos said:
@Ozbenno: I haven't opened the saves yet, or done the math, but I do have a couple of questions for the resigned Prime Minister:
  1. Did we research Theology, or trade for it? The tech is useless to us (we can't run Theocracy in this variant), so I hope we just got it as a bonus in some trade.
  2. Why Free Religion, and not Free Speech? we've got to go cottage-heavy now to research the big space-race techs, and we need the boost to the towns sometime. Like I said, I haven't run the numbers, so help me understand the choice.

  1. If you had read the report Zophos, you'd realise that Toko gave it to us as part of his joining the war effort :lol:.

    Free Religion/Free Speech? You might be right on that, I don't know. I wanted to get out of Pacifism, as we're going to need to boost the military, I only wanted one turn of anarchy. Just thought the saving on troop upkeep, plus 10% research boost in all cities, would be better. At some stage we'll need to swap to Universal Suffrage, so if Free Speech works out better than Bureaucracy, we can swap this one as well.

Oh...you mean I should actually read the screenshots, too? Work, work, work, all the time. :hammer2:

Shame he didn't have anything useful in the tech department. Of course, that just means he won't be a rival in the space race, so it's ok.

(It's also a shame I didn't preview that post for formatting before clicking save. :sad:)

Wow ~ i haven't had to post a roster since my last turns...you guys are great :D

Roster
Pholkhero > OoP
Zophos > on deck
Ozbenno >
RoboKai > just played
RemConius > UP NOW and able to play tonight

As you can see, I'm going to be OoP this weekend so just skip me. I didn't realize it was thursday already and i've got a ton of stuff to do at home this weekend for my kids bday!

Pre-Turn:
Anarchy in switch to free speech. We have lots of towns, so bureaucracy is not needed anymore.

1605:
Statue of Liberty is built!
Rearrange specialist to be mainly scientists and merchants.

1610:
Brennus gives us MT for Liberalism and Constitution.
Peter gives us Sci Method and 700g for Democracy
Bismarck is paid 240g for peace.

Science now upto 80%

We have oil near seattle.

1620:
Nasty Brennus wants chemistry, I deny, he declares. What an old story. Bet, he, we are at war with our weak neighbour.

1625:
Units are moved over to Brennus, should be strong enough to take his capital (bombard and suicide strikes)

1630:
Assembly Line comes in, rifling next.

1645:
Rifling in, Biology next.

Important notes:
-Moved all units west, leaves east flank lightly defended. And there are a few units approaching in Toku's country.
Other cities are lightly defended, we could trade for some cash to finance upgrades.
-With the current units we can take a few cities from Brennus, but we should upgrade to infantry and build more. Infantry have high odds against longbows.
-Our culture snooped the horses from Brennus, which he was using to build cavalry. I think he only managed a few.
-We should be able to build units fast and take Brennus' cities.

Silly Brennus ~ don't you know you have "chosen unwisely" :lol:

If we can, should we just eliminate him, do you think?

btw, nice turns :goodjob:

I spoke too soon. Can't play tonight, but I can tomorrow. Oz, if you can play tonight (and want to), I'll swap with you.

Ok...sorry for the delay. Turns played, but it's late, and there's a lot to tell. Report tomorrow.

It's been....bloody. :scared:

So...Brennus thinks he's tough, does he? Let's take a look around and see if we can convince him otherwise.

Inherited Turn - 1650: Tech situation is mediocre. Peter, Luis, and AC all have 1-3 techs on us (and we have a couple back). Peter & Louis are at WFYABTA, AC might trade Steel, but not right now. Blah.

And, yep, we're at war with Brennus. He's got a respectable stack in his capital, which we're lining up on, and there are a couple of lightly-defended cities in the south. Can't see much else. And we're advancing with...what? A few Grenadiers, a cavalry, and a smattering of maces/swords and an axe. Hrm...I'd have kept the outdated units home and upgraded them - they won't be much help in city-taking, but maybe we can find a use.

Our power rating is in the toilet. This is bad.

We can't whip, draft, or rush-buy, nor do we have much money for upgrades. This is very bad.

I remember something about the eastern front being lightly defended. Let's see...ah. There are a pair of longbows in Thracian. But Brennus has a Cavalry and a Crossbow in Tokugawa's territory within striking distance.

Tokugawa won't even talk to us. It's been twelve turns since we cancelled trades with him twelve turns ago. And clearly he's got Open Borders with Brennus. If he turns on us, this could get extremely bad.

And most of our cities are constructing buildings. Markets, Banks, etc. Nice, but we need some troops! Well, most of 'em complete in a couple of turns - let 'em finish, then start the mobilization. Switch Thracian to an Infantry NOW, and bring a Grenadier up from Seattle to try to stave off that Cavalry. MM a bit in the cities, then press Enter.

IBT: Yep...the mini-stack in the east invades. And kills our Axe on the border (which I had not even noticed was there. It stops to pillage a town.

Turn 1 - 1655: Move the troops up to Bibracte in the west. We need to take down the defenses (our best attack is at 22% right now), so wait for the siege to form up. I figure I'll take down the stack in his capital, which ought to take the fight out of him, then mop up the cities on the southern coast, then evaluate. Since we need a heavy-hitter, I move up Ziggy from his guard duty in Vienne. Nothing in Brennus' arsenal looks too threatening to Infantry, and I think I'll need that Medic III on this campaign. The CRIII Infantry stays behind as garrison. :crazyeye:

IBT: The cavalry stack in the east closes on Thracian and pillages again.

Turn 2 - 1660: Ok...we have a grenadier in Thracian now. The enemy cavalry is at 12 strength (healing after fighting the axe, so he did some good). It's a straight-up 50% fight if we attack, but the cav will only get stronger if we let it rest. ATTACK!

Drat...that's supposed to show a dead horseman. Ah, well. As I keep telling Pholk, it pays to be in good with the RNGod:

Not a scratch on our Grennie. :bowdown: I decide not to push my luck with another 50% battle (LB v. Xbow), but just take out the Xbow with my perfectly healthy Grenadier next turn.

This marvelous success also gets us a new GG in New York. Easy choice this time - I send him to Boston (the HE city) and settle him as an instructor for +2 XP.

Oh, right. Boston: Market-> KFC Infantry :mischief:
Vienne: Cavalry -> Trebuchet

Start the bombardment in Bibracte.

IBT: Biz cancels our peace deal. Joy. And Brennus throws a Treb at us outside Bibracte. Not much collateral damage, but the treb withdraws. :mad:

Turn 3 - 1665: Washington: Cavalry -> Infantry. The Grenadier at Thracian takes out the Xbow, as expected.

Bombarded again at Bibracte. Why are we only down to 10%? Oh, right. The patch made walls reduce bombardment damage by 50%. :gripe: We have good odds with a Cavalry, so I send him in. He kills off the top defender w/o a scratch, again! Next combat is at 30%, so I wait again to take down the rest of the defense and let Ziggy catch up. Oh, and I punish a Musket trying to sneak by us to the east.

A GS is born in Vienne, as well. He'll lightbulb 1851 beakers toward Physics, or I can settle him in NY. If my math is right, he'll give 21 bpt there (while we're in Representation, anyway), so we'll be ahead in 90 turns if we settle. Easy choice.

Also note that I've moved half our navy (i.e. a Caravel) over to the coast near NY to watch for incoming ships.

IBT: Three of Brennus' Grenadiers leave the southern cities and head toward Vienne. Also, Peter decides we haven't been pulling our weight:

I deny his request - I don't want Biz breathing down my neck again - and he stays Pleased. Good enough for now.

Turn 4 - 1670: Philly: Market -> Catapult. It'll take forever, but every little bit helps.

Finally, the pieces are in place in Bibracte. First, we strip the last of the defenses, then Ziggy goes in at 96.4%. And wins.

Ziggy takes March, BTW, 'cuz he's going to see more action. Then a cavalry takes out a Grenadier at very high odds. Now, the second string comes in. First we send in the cats & trebs for collateral damage. I lose two cats and a treb, but everything is weakened enough to give wonderful odds. Then I just throw the rest of the stack in, and...

The plunder money goes to upgrade our Caravel to a Frigate, since there's a couple of Brennus' ships snooping around there.

IBT: Yep...Brennus hits us with two frigates. We get the first, but the second takes us out. And the Grenadiers near Vienne pillage a bit.

Turn 5 - 1675: Tolosa: Bank -> Trebuchet

At Vienne, I send out our Infantry to squash the Grenadiers nearby. I fortify Bibracte a bit with the low-tech units, and send the siege and heavy hitters south toward the coast.

IBT: A bunch of Brennus' ships show up on the northern border near New York. And he drops this steaming pile on us.

Oh, crap. We have a grand total of 2 archers in NY. And nothing that can get there in time.

Remaining report in the next message (might take me a bit...the three year-old is gettin' persistent).

(Does 11 hours later count as 'a bit'? :lol:)

Turn 6 - 1680: Ok...this is not good. Nine units outside New York. We have two Archers inside. Our good forces are all 3-4 turns away inside Celtic territory. Hmm...what can we get inside the city from nearby cities? One Warrior? :aargh:

If I lose New York, this game is effectively over. We'll never win the space race. Cheery thought.

Well, there's a little good news:

Start on Steel. And Boston: Infantry -> Infantry. The new one can't get to NY in one turn, but if I can hold out, it can get there in two.

So...how to weather the storm. I need to upgrade those Archers to Infantry THIS TURN or I have no chance. So...I get the money the only way I can:

And I missed the screenie, but Louis gave us 260 gold for Democracy, too. That's enough to upgrade both Archers to Infantry. I move in that Warrior, too. Every little bit helps, and maybe I can upgrade him next turn, too.

Down on the western front, I bombard Bagacum. Ziggy leads the charge, again, with excellent odds, and wins. Again, the next one (cavalry) has mediocre odds, so I wait a turn to capture it.

Cross fingers, press Enter.

IBT: New York: The treb bombards, then Brennus gets down to business.

As you can see, we repulse the cavs, and the Grenadiers decide to pillage instead. The muskets wander to other tiles, presumably to pillage next turn.

Over in Bibracte, Brennus tests the defenses as well.

And, of course, a pile of ships is wandering over the coast north of New York and Atlanta. :sad:

Turn 7 - 1685: Vienne: Treb -> Cavalry

@ Bagacum: bombard away the defenses, and send in a Grenadier to eliminate the last longbow.

We also wipe out a few units outside Bibracte, before they can attack or head east into the heartland.

More good news...we're no longer in last place on power score:

Some cavalry and an Infantry are racing to reinforce New York. Looks like we might make it. I don't attack out of the city with my injured infantry, because I don't want to get trapped outside the city. Towns are easier to replace than the city.

IBT: Brennus' frigates catch up with the other half of our navy. The results are as you expect. With nothing better to do, they start pillaging our seafood. Atlanta and Chicago are heading into starvation.

Oh, and Biz wants a handout. Liberalism for free...no. Might sell it, though:

That's enough to upgrade that d-mn Warrior in New York.

Turn 8 - 1690: Slam a couple of the Grenadiers outside New York with the Infantry. Cavs are on the way from the Western front.

[/b]IBT:[/b] Pillage, pillage. I hate you, Brennus.

Turn 9 - 1695: Boston: Infantry -> Cavalry

With Cavs and another Infantry, we finally finish the pillaging land units @ New York. One town is completely gone. Several others have been busted down in size, but they'll regrow.

Oh, and Ziggy leads us to yet another victory down in Celtia:

I kept all of them, BTW. Pops are high enough that they should be able to pay their own way using sea tiles if nothing else. And Ziggy is up to 40 XP. I gave him March somewhere in there, since he was spearheading all the attacks, but he still has one unspent promotion.

IBT: AC wants to trade (our) silver for (his) fish. Since our fish has been pillaged, and several cities are unhealthy, I accept. We should cancel this deal once we get rid of Brennus' navy.

Turn 10 - 1700: Another tech comes in:

Start on Railroad. Feel free to veto.

I send a Cavalry west from New York to cause some trouble, and it LOSES to the longbow on the gold mine. :mad: That was at 86%, too. Well, the RNGod giveth...

That's about it. Could be better, could be worse. I wish I'd defended NY better about 2-3 turns sooner, so I didn't have the panic in 1680, but it turned out...not horribly. Brennus still won't talk, so we have some more conquering to do. And I HOPE that he's pretty much shot his wad at this point - we could probably roll up his whole empire in another 20-30 turns.

The only big problem at the moment is food - both Atlanta and Chicago are in heavy starvation

And finally...the save.

Out of one frying pan and into an even hotter one is a good summary of the events of my turn.

Well the unwanted war with Brennus has set us back somewhat but we still look like we're in a good position.

I switch research to Physics (head to Industrialism). Trade deer to Augustus for 12gpt.

Chicago is still building the courthouse it was last time I played :lol:.

Press enter.

We slowly advance on Brennus' last four cities.

Tokogawa will finally talk to us and I trade him Rifling for 750 much needed cash.

Isca falls.

We now have 8 unhappy faces from war weariness :mad: so I pull the plug on the war, we can't afford to get distracted from our goal of space.

Although I raze Durnovaria first, we wouldn't have had many useable squares from this one.

Physics in Electricity queued.

I start to move the infantry to the other coast, just in case Toko gets frisky.

You freaking little pr*ck :cry:.

He was pleased with us last turn :mad:.

No sign of any unfriendlies yet. I move the infantry back

Here they are.

He obviously has Combustion.

Brennus holds them off. We're going to be sea pillaged again. AC didn't have Assembly Line last time I checked.

GS born in New York. Might want to check what he will give us after Electricity (due next turn).

I force Brennus into Mercantilism, to stop him giving trade routes to Peter and Louis.

Something to keep in kind. I think its worth it as Peter may actually have some naval might to lend to the battle or distract AC from us.

So where to from here?

AC obviously has the naval edge but we have the military one (I think). We should have Industrialism next turnset. Do we then want to go Artillery --> Rocketry or head Railroad --> Combustion first?

Just remember that in the new patch, you can't see units that are on a transport. Transport outside Bagacum (did someone make that one up?) IS empty as it was the one that unloaded the cavalry at Brennus' place.

I still think we're all right but it really is going to depend on what Augustus throws at us.

AC declared war on Brennus and us? (shrug...)
EDIT: Oh, we had vassalized him... good, he will absorb all the attacks.

Whatever, playing now, I'll see what AC has in store for the astronauts.

I think AC was gonna declare on Brennus. It just so happens we vassalized him. Maybe AC will talk peace in the near future then we can resume tech trading soon.

Turn 1:
Research: Electricity -> Industrialism
Follow the plan. Probably should research Fission next so we can build battleships (uranium unlocked with Fission). Although a town in Free Speech is tough to lose, I'm sorry it has to go. We need the uranium.
GS popped in New York, settle immediately.

Turn 2:
AC's Destroyers leave our area and head over to Brennus' place.
NY: Oxford -> Factory
Tolosa: (forgot) -> Grocer
Boston: Factory -> Infantry
Redistribute Celtic War veterans to our north shore cities.

Turn 3:
Deal Canceled: Cow to Brennus for Clam.
The reason? AC's destroyers have returned and pillaged Brennus' fishing vessel.
NY: veto Factory -> Grocer (health reasons)

Turn 4:
Atlanta: Frigate -> Bank
Vienne: Factory -> Bank
Camulodunum: Theater -> Courthouse
Deal Canceled: Our Horse for Peter's Copper + 12gpt
The reason: Peter has culturally acquired one of Bismarck's horses.

In other news, AC's destroyers continue to ravage Brennus' shores.
ph05lostdestroyervo9.jpg

Turn 5:
Boston: Infantry -> Bank
Philadelphia: Cannon -> Forge
Destroy town and finish Uranium mine.

Turn 6:
Tolosa: Grocer -> Market
Bibracte: Infantry -> Courthouse
Cut science to 60%, now +12 gpt.
Put workers to sleep outside Washington. (there's a sign)

Turn 7:
Washington: Bank -> Grocer
Thracian: Bank -> Grocer

Turn 9:
Research: Industrialism -> Fission
Good news, we have not one, but two Aluminium deposits, already mined.
ph05alumxx0.jpg

Renegotiate Toku's gold deal up to 16 gpt + his rice for Wheat + Sheep (it used to be Deer + Wheat).
ph05reneg1av8.jpg

This allows a Deer trade with Peter for 15 gpt.
ph05reneg2ca8.jpg

Turn 10:
NY: Grocer -> Courthouse

NOTE: We will be able to upgrade Frigates to Destroyers soon, when Fission is done, but feel free to veto Fission if there are any more pressing concerns. Other paths suggested by Ozbenno were Artillery -> Rocketry (forgoing the navy) or Railroad -> Combustion.
