PH07: The School of Athens

Im really not the peacemonger type so im dropping out. I dont want to hurt your progress. Peace.
That's fine ~

i'll pm Pigswill and see if he'd still like to play, if not, I'll post the game in the registration thread.

i'll be playing today, report tonight.

Fed up with building cottages and securing a massive tech lead so this looks like fun. I would be honoured to participate in the roster.

Had a quick look. Doing ok so far. If we're going for SE we should probably beeline CoL and switch to caste asap.

as do i, but more thoughts on tech path later ~ for now, to the scolding!

If there's four workers all doing different tasks, then Zophos must've played before me:
550workerseg3.jpg

oh, there are four, and they ARE doing different things! I win!! Not scolding so much as lashing. I prefer to at least double up my workers (not grouped together) so that resources/tiles are online faster.

THe next turn, I sent a couple workers to Princeton to improve those bananas:
520workersbananaxn8.jpg

and cracked the whip at Athens:
520whipgrantq2.jpg

We also killed a barb on the IBT:
520deadbarbhv0.jpg

445 bc, Shaka came by, getting all 'demand-y' on us:
445zuluindianey6.jpg

I said no this (in retrospect, I wish i'd've said yes), but then reached an agreement:
445zuluobou7.jpg

on this same turn, Asoka is revolting:
445asokahrph9.jpg

well, not literally; with hair like that, who could be revolting? He's the Indian Fabio!

Aiee ~ a barb axe makes his appearance in 415:
415aieebarbshm1.jpg

However, we was owned by our archer next turn:
415deadbarbyi1.jpg

I also discovered this down to our south:
385barbcitymh0.jpg

It doesn't interfere with us too much, but i think the next longer term goal should be take that city.

Frederick came by in 355 for a trade:
355fredtradeas1.jpg

Normally I value happy resources slightly higher than healthy ones (they're the bishops to the health's knights), but we need all the friends we can get.

Buddhism spread to us in 340, and i revolted.
340buddhismrevoltfy2.jpg

You can see, everyone but Asoka is Buddhist, so . . .

And finally, here's Tiny Greece, with map signs for the next player:
325tinygreecexg4.jpg

after that Granary finishes in Sparta, pls start a settler, and whip it for 2 pop when you can;
@ Athens, whip the Settler next turn for 2 pop, and maybe head for a library.
@ Princeton, whip that Library, and set it to fast growth. We should let it get to 7, and run some scientists ASAP.

I thnk Sparta could be produciton for a bit, while Athens and Princeton provide the beakers.

re: tech path, we're still on the way to ABCs, but I'm not so sure the Great Library is still feasible. I also am somewhat against it b/c i want to go for the general SE, and not depend on any wonder for our victory, but it can be a group decision.

In either case, Alpha > Lit (?) > CoL > Civil Service (desperately necessary to spread the farms!)

We should found Sorbone first, and then Cambridge. Then gear up to take that barb city. Generally speaking, i think the SE runs at a much lower sci % so we can afford those 2, and a third one down the line. I think we may end up with about 9 cities or so, if we play our cards right.

finally, let's all welcome Pigswill, coming in to pick up the slack

double finally, I played 15 turns as that seemed to be a better pace. Unless war happens (and the player should stop at that point and report to the group), let's do 15

9 is a bit in the high range pre 100AD but still fine i think.

Can we take the poneys in the south ?

9 is a bit in the high range pre 100AD but still fine
oh, i didn't mean to put a date on it. I just figured, if we settled right, we'd get to about 9 cities in the end.

That barb city, though in a poor location, should be kept i think. It would just be a spot the AI would settle at any rate ~

Did exactly as suggested above. also cleared a lot of jungle. we now have sorbone, farms, bananas hooked to cities, sorbone connected, great lighthouse BIDL, some great people born IDL, and we are 4th in size... not much else to report.

but here are some pretty screenies...:)

Out of our rivals, Shaka is the one we MUST go well on the diplomatic front.

start assigning scientists

only bis and Asoka dont have ABC.
Trading with Asoka is a bit of risk of upsetting Shaka,
But Asoka gives us Math and Bis only useless junk
xander_trade_10bc.jpg

xander_trade_asoka_10bc.jpg

research poly for litt.
20AD Nobody know litt. good, we have a chance at GL
35AD Cambridge found
65AD i accept this deal for diplo points
remember to stop it in 10 Turns. Shaka Has Masonery & Maths so is likely to have construction as well
Churchill founded Warwick. We will have to destroy it
xander_trade_shaka_65bc.jpg

Notes Asoka is likely to be our first target, because the wonders he built (ToA and GW)
will make too strong if we wait too much. Churchill can be a pain in the **s but not yet.

We have a good chance at GL if we chop it in Princeton
Connect roads and ressources at Cambridge.

All in all, our position is ok i think.
We are still a bit weak, but this will change.
I builded workers, build more.
Dont sell Litt !

About going or not to GL, I strongly think that this is not a real SE if we dont get at least one of GL or pyramids (ToA could be added to that list, it can be very strong). We choose (well, we had not really the choice) to skip the mids, so we should snag the GL
GL is always a strong move, but vital for us, methink. We had a slow start, we must compensate now.

It is one thing of playing a variant, and no cottage is fine, but other Civs wont stop teching to wait for us, and Asoka is just short of being as bad as Mansa in that departement.

Pigswill >>UP NOW

I see that it's been a while since we had any turns. If pigswill hasn't posted by this evening, I'll pick it up.

good turns code and LukeP ~ i, too, agree that GL is needed in order to actually win the game since I don't know how well diplo would go, and i don't think cultural is in the cards, so it looks like space has to be our aim.

sorry for being absent, was OoP, but thought i would have internet access ~ i didn't. Thanks for picking up the slack Zophos. As you said, if Pigs can't get it by tonight, grab it and go ~

Sorry for the delay, been caught up with a couple of SGs and SGOTM for the past few days.

Got it.

Will ponder tonite and should play tomorrow.

Looks like 15 turns unless we start fighting.

A GS is due to pop in Athens in 7 turns. We're still about thirty turns from CoL for philosophy slingshot. I'm not totally convinced about benefits of an academy at this point. Any other techs are likely to be a waste of beakers.

We seem to be collecting axes.

Had a look at the map and decided that Sparta is the place to build great lib; six forests, decent production and not much else.

Also decided to gather the axes into a stackette and beat up some barbs.

Techwise finish lit then head towards CoL.

Well, that was the plan.

T1 140ad.
Whip library in Sparta (2 pop).
Whip worker in Athens (2 pop).

T2 155ad.
Discover lit, start meditation.
Start Glib in Sparta (525 hammers, 40 hammer overflow from library). Workers heading towards Sparta's forests and hills.
Athens worker>axe
Princeton axe > granary.
(Shaka has lit already:eek: )

T3 170ad.
Whip granary in Princeton (2pop)
Axes slowly congregating.
Goldmine is connected, more happy.

T4 185ad.
Princeton granary>sword.

T5. 200ad.
Athens axe>sword.
Discover med, start priesthood.
Notice that Churchill has a longbow in Warwick, he must have discovered feudalism already  .

T6 215ad.
Pop GS. He'll lightbulb sailing. Put him in storage for now.

T7 230ad.
Cancel incense-ivory deal with Shaka.
Barb galley heading towards Athens. Not only don't we have a navy we don't even have sailing  . Trade lit to Bismark for sailing and masonry. Start trireme in Athens, start trireme in Princeton.

T8 245ad.
Whip trireme in Athens.

T9. 260ad.
Discover priesthood, start CoL.
Barb galley rips nets in Athens, there goes the spare food.
Athens trireme>workboat.
Trireme attacks galley at Athens, 88% chance. Loses! Sinks! Barb galley still blocking fish. Cancel workboat, start another trireme.
Axe stack attacks and razes pop 1 barb city up north; its on a hill so poor odds, however only lose one axe for three archers and pick up 33 gold.

T10 275ad.
Christianity founded in Warwick.
Checking out trade options notice that Hannibal and Bismark have CoL; we're still like 15 turns away, this is not good.
Use GS to lightbulb compass for some tech trading.

T11 290ad.
Compass trades:
Churchill - currency
Shaka- monarchy +100G
Bismark - calendar +50G
Sell lit to Churchill for 280G
Economy suddenly improves, up research to 70%.
CoL now 10 turns away, next GS not due for 17 turns.
Switch research to mono for OR, 3 turns at deficit.

T12. 305ad.
Asoka offers spices for ivory. Declined.

T13. 320ad.
zzzz

T14.335ad.
Discover mono, resume CoL.
Revolt to OR, one turn anarchy.

T15. 350ad.
OR is in. Knocks a couple of turns off Glib (still 19 turns away with one more forest to chop but Sparta is due to grow in a couple of turns which will up production). 14 turns until next GS. Philosophy slingshot is dubious at this rate.

ph1a0000.jpg

Axe stackette heading south to next barb city.

ph1b0000.jpg

Its the holy city of Warwick! (Imagine there are two CG1 longbows there)

ph1c0000.jpg

At least we're managing to keep our friends happy.

ph1d0000.jpg

We don't seem to be catching up very quickly!

The Save (350ad): http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/90414/Xander_AD-0350.CivWarlordsSave

Wow ~ a barb trireme! I haven't seen one of those for awhile!!

when was Warwick founded?!? I don't think our tech situation is all that bad. Even if we don't bulb Philo, i think going for liberalism will give us some good tech bait to catch up. We just have to make sure our science output begins to outpace the AIs.

We need to found more cities, i think. At least one for now. It's a dang shame we lost that city-site to Churchill, and i'd like to avoid that from happening again.

I think we should start heading for Liberalism, going CoL > Civil Service > Paper > Ed > Liberalism, bulbing Philo and perhaps we can swing Paper, too, depending on our ability to allocate GSs after the Caste System swap.

Zophos is UP NOW, 24 starting . . . . now!!

i think we are quite fine. Stored scientist is one tech, another soon, we will catch up methink.

I agree on needing more cities. By my count, we are at five, we need a minimum of six.

Was the ivory deal with shaka revoked ? I asked for that in my log

Ok....got the save. However, I can't play tonight, and likely not tomorrow (Thu). So, pholk, if you can play before Friday, I'm happy to swap. Just let me know.
