PH09: The King and We

The whip is our only salvation here.

Please save us from this travesty, O Grey One Master of the :whipped: :p

Okay, as I was saying, the first 3-4 turns took 2 hours to play, and the remaining turns went blazingly fast by comparison such that I played a total of 15.

Our stack that was returning home was wiped out, leaving Reading dangerously close to the German stacks, and it had a whopping garrison of ONE brave defender -- longbow. A few whips and the situation improved, one thing was because Bismarck seemed lethargic in his war efforts. He was sending lone units in ... perhaps he wanted peace.

And this might helped him a bit ...

Oooo .... [pray]

Meanwhile, I gun-downed an airship.

Ph09-AD1887-lone-airship.jpg

Leaving an air unit unescorted in a fort? Improved AI? My foot!

The votes are in .... very interesting. No doubt history and politics students should be able to write volumes of thesis out of it.

Ph09-AD1887-results.jpg

The votes actually surpass the requisite number for success, but it actually registered as failed. More interestingly, the Master wanted peace, but his two dogs are going to defy it??? Hmm ... shouldn't the vassals listen to the master in matters of foreign affairs? So the result should be that peace is returned, but since the vassals defied the masters, they should be at war. The correct outcome should be we and bismarck are now at war with QSH and Sally! This game is obviously BUGGY and FLAWED!!!! WE NEED THE FUTURE OF TOMORROW EXPANSION!!!!

Anyway, this might be one reason why QSH defied:

Ph09-AD1887-chinbese-stack.jpg

So we are facing an enemy where his two lapdogs all boasted artilleries and cavs while we still have pikes and longbows. Boy, we are backward.

Fortunately, there is another way to force peace where QSH and Sally can't defy.

Ph09-AD1887-sign-peace.jpg

Yeah, it is costly. That city has lots of towns, but chances are we are going to lose it (and a few others along with it) anyway should the war be prolonged by a couple of turns more.

Thereafter is a series of build ups. Two events of notice:

Ph09-AD1888-event.jpg

Yeah, right, hammer a man when he is down! What a character you have, Spirits of Random Events!!! :( Grrrr...

Ph09-AD1889-event.jpg

This one was interesting. One of the more creative random events, I would say. Might be useful in a cultural win gambit.

Anyway, here we are:

Ph09-AD1895-victory.jpg

How to win this? I don't know, we are very backwards.

Ph09-AD1895-techs.jpg

We should be able to out tech Ramses, Sally and QSH given time with our sheer numbers, but Bismarck?

Another alternative is to go the zerg approach and keep pumping troops. What we lack in quality we make up for it in quantity.

Tech wise, we got philosophy (which puzzled me. Why Philosophy????). I go for Biology, as that is a tech Ramses, who is the only one willing to trade with us, still doesn't have.

tech to what military objective?? artillery and infantry? tanks??

then, once there, put the slider down to 0 for upgrades adn such, and then build/whip an army??

GreyFox: Well done on stopping the war.

Pholkhero: I think that's the best plan. It's a long shot, but we may just be able to do it. The danger is we get to Artillery and infantry when Bismark gets to MechInfantry and advanced flight and just wipes out our stacks again.

I must admit, if this was my personl game, I'd probably have given up by now. :(

You're not the only one, Simon :p

I would've given up once I saw that start

I agree, but that's one of the best things about SGs ~ seeing if, w/the combined playing skills of others, you can get out of a hole and learn some new things. that start DID suck, though, and I must admit i was glad to be able to hand off that save ~ seeing those stacks of Biz's really took the wind out of my sails (as Agg AI stacks have a way of doing :yup: )

Let's beeline to Industrialism and Artillery, and give it another shot. If that fails, i say that we really do throw in the towel and knock over our king ~

lads... i will have to play tomorrow... sorry for the delay. if anyone wants to slide a turnset in the middle u are more than welcome
No problem, crotazzo ~ don't know what ya'll are doing, but i'm still trying to do my xmas shopping for my wife and kids.

well... after shopping for chrismas and playing football with some friends, i could finally sit down and play... but the game crashed 2 times in 4 turns (i seem to have incompatibilities with my video card, so it crashes once in a while in every singe 3d aplication i run from civ4 to autocad) Unfortunately that made me redo all my moves, so i will finish playing tomorrow.

The good news are, that after 10 turns of peace bismark didnt attack us, even though he has his stack ready at our borders.

The bad news are that he is like 80 votes away from a diplo victory

PD. anyone knows if i can make the game autosave every 2 turns instead of 4?

that's fine crotazzo.

also, there's a line after what fox posted where you can specify how many autosaves to keep in the directory.

Finally played!... sorry for the delay.

After the 2 system crashes, the game really went smoothly. I think that bismark is trying to build up some population to win this by diplomacy.

The first thing i did is changing our economy civic to mercantilism. Then micromanaged cities trying to specialize them a little. London is trying to become a gp farm.
I also put some workers to sleep when i didnt know what to do with them.

Apostolic palace election:
Civ4ScreenShot0001-2.jpg

Traded biology with rammy. I set research to phisics and then rocketry(i think) to get artillery.
Civ4ScreenShot0002-2.jpg

And i noticed that he is still our pal, so i asked for a defensive, and he gave the OK! ;)
Civ4ScreenShot0003-2.jpg

I had nothing better to do so, i gave a little help to churchill. No diplomacy modifiers though.
Civ4ScreenShot0004-1.jpg

By the way. Bismark was willing to pay 32 GPT for our extra coal (we have 2), he doesnt have any now. But he does have coal in his lands, but windmilled. I didnt make the trade just in case.

And finally... his stack!
(i think i played 15 turns, but im not sure)

Sorry for the delay ppl.

HAPPY HOLYDAYS TO ALL!:D

does anyone else feel like we're walking to our own graveyards?? ;)

Crotazzo >> just played
Simon_c >> UP NOW
Negyvenketto >> on deck

okay, way past the 24 hours here, so we'll skip simon for now. If you can post in the next day or so, we can just swap you and Negy and you'll be on deck then.

Or are we at the point were it may be best to just retire now?? It seems like a lot of people have lost their gumption for the game, and have no desire to play it, or am i projecting a little? ;)

I don't think it's because we're losing the desire for the game.

I think it's the fact that it takes such a long time to play the turns that makes our being behind blaringly obviously, and THAT kinda kills the mood for this game .... get it
