Phaedo02- Rage_Against_The_Machine

I wonder how long he's been paying maintainance on a Courthouse in Athens?

 In all fairness, it did him some good when he was in communism, right? Of course, he probably built it long before that.

Just finished. Here's the save: View attachment Rage_1790_AD_Norton.SAV

Notes:
-We're now tied with Alex in the space race; each of us has built 6 parts.
-Evidently Alex's horse was the real strategist, because Alex himself has proven exceptionally stupid. He hasn't attempted to land with overwhelming force, though he could certainly do so if he built enough transports, and despite all our undefended coastal cities (which he can see since the AI can see everything), he hasn't built a single marine! I guess the AI won't build marines if it can build tanks or (maybe) TOW infantry. Not only that, but his attacks have been remarkably predictable and ineffective: his bombers and destroyers seem to go after tiles with zero-defense units such as workers and artillery. As such, he can't do anything but destroy terrain improvements, city improvements, and population. IOW, we can bait his destroyers by stationing artillery in some of our coastal cities. In a little while, I'll post screenshots showing the spots he's focused on during this set.
-We're done cleaning up fallout.

-Evidently Alex's horse was the real strategist,

Indeed - and Bucephalus was his name. :mischief:

he hasn't built a single marine! I guess the AI won't build marines if it can build tanks or (maybe) TOW infantry.

Spot on.

Better yet - position Arty where his Bombers can reach, and supplement them with SAM's; works every time.

Nice work, Norton.

I should be able to play tomorrow.

Indeed - and Bucephalus was his name. :mischief:

Think I didn't know that? :D

Better yet - position Arty where his Bombers can reach, and supplement them with SAM's; works every time.

True. New Suo in the northeast has been getting bombed every turn; the other places are just getting hit by destroyers.

Now here's the screenshots I promised earlier.

First, the northwest, which is a magnet for Greek destroyers. Also, Hakodate got nuked a little while back, but the fallout's cleaned up now:

Next, the northeastern peninsula, which is drawing fire from bombers and destroyers:

Here's Dutch Island, where Alex can't land any units, but which his destroyers have shelled a couple of times:

Next, Matsuyama in the southeast, which has no strategic value but which Alex's destroyers went after until I moved the artillery somewhere else:

Finally, here's our core, good as new (well, mostly) now that the fallout's gone and the terrain improvements restored:

lurker's comment: Nice work, guys! This game's been great to follow. And it looks like the world is nicely divided up between you and the Greeks. I'm gonig to enjoy watching you guys take the rest of what is rightfully yours. :ar15: I missed some of the discussion on the victory condition. Has one been chosen?

We must win by SS only.

I've played the set, but it's late so I'll post the save and log in the morning.

Brief highlights, though:

It's been a Turkey shoot; 33 Bombers, 11 Tanks, 2MI, 16 Destroyers, 2 Battleships, and a full transport - for zero losses.

Amsterdam was nuked again.

We have 4 ICBM's.

We stole Synthetic Fibres - we now both have MA's.

We are close to completing two of the last four SS Parts.

Greece completed SS Storage and Supply.

Greece has begun to build Transports again, which wil no doubt be bringing MA's our way.

There is still some mileage in this game, but OTOH we now need only 3 techs to win; depending which way Alex choses to research them, I may have just played my last set.

Sounds like it went well! Guess i shouldn't have bothered rebuilding infrastructure in Amsterdam, though--Alex will probably nuke it again if he still has nukes being built.

I finally got some time to download Norton's save and have a peek around. Things are well in hand. I did an investigation to make sure Al didn't have uranium. That last nuke of Amsterdam must have been his absolute last one right? We have the ICBMs in case of the depletion issue so it's not a huge deal but that nuke during Buce's turn had to have been started earlier right? Al didn't get access to EDIT: uranium suddenly did he?

lurker's comment: SS victory in a 0% science game :)eek:), and it looks promising! Well done.

That was the challenge from the get go and it's not just promising but almost done thanks to a fantastic team :D

That last nuke of Amsterdam must have been his absolute last one right?

Who knows? he's probably got a couple in totally corrupt cities, up in the tundra, but as long as he uses them so inefficiently it's no big deal (unless you live in Amsterdam )

Al didn't get access to nuclear power suddenly did he?

Not quite sure of the relevance, but I'm hoping that's next rather than Stealth.

lurker's comment: SS victory in a 0% science game :)eek:), and it looks promising! Well done.

It's better than that, Aabra - we've had a trashed rep since the late Middle Ages.

@Phaedo: I've just seen your edit; no, he still hasn't got U, it's just one he started waaaaay back in some one-horse town.

Pre-turn:

All ship-shape, just a few builds adjusted for personal preferences.

1)

Shoot down 2 Bombers over New Suo; Tank suicides against an Army; sink Destroyer.

2)

Another quiet turn; shoot down 2 Bombers; another Tank loses interest in life.
Too many Bombers are getting through unpunished at New Suo, so I move a few more SAM's there.

3)

Immediate dividends paid at New Suo, 4 Bombers down; another Tank dies attacking our Armies; sink Destroyer.

4)

Alex lands 4 Tanks + 2 MI near Kyoto; he has also left 7 Destroyers and a Battleship in coastal waters.

6 Greek Bombers go down over New Suo; Tanks/MI's eliminated; sink all shipping.

5)

4 more Bombers fall from the skies above New Suo - will Alex ever learn?; apparently not - he continues with his policy of sending single Tanks to their doom attacking our Armies; 4 Destroyers and a Battleship, left within Arty/Cruise range, are sunk.

6)

Nothing attacks us this turn, but a look at f3 shows that Alex is building Transports again; he has over 200 MI and 75 Tanks to put in them.

7)

Alex loses another 6 Bombers, this time in the skies above 'Buce's RC' and the Northernmost Army stack.
He won't be building any more Tanks - he just learned about Sythetic Fibres, which strangely is all that is required to bring armour in to the Modern Age.
Our Spy safely steals it.

8)

Another 3 Bombers down, and 2 more Tanks.
Oops, Alex has another ICBM - the residents of Amsterdam should head for the shelters.

9)

Amsterdam turns orange again.
Greeks add SS Storage/Supply to their SS.
Destroy another 4 Bombers.

10)

Workers do their stuff, and Amsterdam starts to regenerate.
Alex has only a few Bombers left, loses 2 more;
3 Destroyers and a Transport decide to visit 'Davy Jones' locker'.
MA attacks Army stack, with expected results.

Epilogue:

My policy during this set was to not use the Bombers against shipping, saving them instead to deal with the inevitable landings; now that they have MA's things get a bit tougher.

Instead, I waited until ships were within territorial waters, then red-lined them with Arty, and finished them with a Cruise. It proved a highly effective strategy, so much so that I dedicated a number of cities to Cruise production, and rushed others when necessary.

Kagoshima is set for 2 turn MA's; I suggest that Osaka should return to Army production once it has finished SS Storage/Supply.

We have 3 Tank Armies, and 1 Army that is a hybrid between Tanks and MA's.

I've located the Bombers in a central position; the last few landings have been in the core.

No need for a map; the destroyers have been following an entirely random pattern of attack, but the Bombers are completely predicable - they either hit New Suo from due North, or Buce's Red Cross, again from the North. No need to do anything, the SAM's are taking a heavy toll on them.

Good luck, Elephantium.

Oh, and here's the save

Got it. I can maybe play tomorrow evening, but Saturday is more likely. If someone else would like to take a turnset before then, be my guest :)

It's going well so far:

Preturn:

Hire a taxman in Nara. It slows growth, but we're already
size 9.
MM Toyama - take a citizen off a hill.
MM Phaedoville - grow to size 7 in 3 turns (then hire
taxmen)
MM Haarlem for more gold and fewer shields this turn (it's
about to produce a missile)
Trigger starvation in Fukushima so it can hire a taxman.
Hire a cop in Edo: Missile in 4 instead of in 5.
New Sado: Change Missile->Harbor (to get an even food bonus
from the fish)
MM for growth in Sugar Pond, growth in 10.
Trigger starvation in New Izumi to allow hiring a taxman.
Ditto in Ise
Hire an extra taxman in New Edo - a citizen was working the
mountain!
Ditto in New Kagoshima (take a citizen off a hill this time
though)
Hire a couple of extra taxmen in New Matsuyama
MM Tusker's Riverbend to hire an extra taxman and start slow
growth.
MM Desert Fish for growth in 4, then extra taxmen.
New Hakodate switches to Harbor (it can grow to size 7 if we
give it more food).
Hire extra taxman in Sugar Lake.
Hire extra taxman in Hunting Hill.
Hire two taxmen in Sandsong.
Hire taxman in New Echizen.
Trigger starvation in New Echigo for tax purposes.
Hire two taxmen in Hakodate
Starve New Kozuke for taxes.
Hire a taxman in Osaka 2
Starve Izumo 2 for taxes.
Hire extra taxman in Nagasaki 2.
Starve Yokohama 2 for taxes.
Extra taxman in Shimonoseki 2.
Extra taxman in Matsuyama 2.
Starve Halifax for taxes.
Hire taxman in New Fukushima

Amsterdam riots. Gee, what a surprise after that nuke.
Groningen: Missiles
Suo: Duct->Market

Turn 10 (1830 AD):

Move some workers into place to start cleaning up Amsterdam.
Sink another transport stack by Hakodate.

Keep an eye on Hakodate and New Echizen; both will grow soon, so they'll need adjustment to keep taxmen rather than citizens working.

I'm up again, right? If so, I'll play tomorrow. Hopefully, Alex will continue researching toward robotics. Any bets on whether he'll nuke Amsterdam again during my set? :crazyeye:
