The best way to avoid the embarrassment of having your tank defeated by a spearman is to play at a higher difficulty level. I find this never happens to me at demigod - because by the time I get tanks the AI is defending with Mech Infantry

Speaking of modern air vehicles being destroyed, planes need *somewhere* to land. If a city with aircraft is captured, and the aircraft are out of fuel/grounded, they can be captured/destroyed. (of course, people would rather destroy their own planes than let it fall into enemy hands, but still)
