How the hell is this possible?

I was playing a game with catherine, continents, monarch difficulty, my capital had 4 gems in the BFC. My second city also had one. And I grabbed Philosophy in 625 BC with the Oracle...

How the hell is this possible?

You researched Col while building the Oracle, I assume... In monarch even the human can do that with some ease ( and the date is not that wierd... in fact it is a little late for Oracle IMHO )

If you do it properly ( and you don't need 4 gems for that ), you can even grab CS with oracle ( I've seen it it Emperor in the Darius LHC )

I expected it to have been gotten with a Great Scientist lightbulb, not the oracle, when I clicked.

Deity players are hard-up for liberalism, to which Philosophy is a direct prerequisite, so they do stuff like that all the time.

Ah, ok. I was kinda amazed by it, cause I'm more of a casual player.

Don't get me wrong, Philo in 625 BC is pretty damn good. Those players I was talking about didn't get there by sucking :p You just didn't use the normal method, which surprised me, is all. (that and the fact that on monarch, no AI had the oracle by 625 BC)

Ah, excuse me... Is Philosophy only important for Liberalism or is there another advantage other than that and religion?

Oracle can go anywhere between 2000bc and 1000ad, its a matter of luck.

Has someone really got it in 1000AD? In my games it's always been built somewhere before 500AD.

About the main topic, I once almost always took Philosophy from The Oracle (or Civil Service until the prerequirement change), but my tactics have changed since that and nowadays I do it much less. I still sometimes try to use The Oracle for Philosophy tech.

You could also have used the Oracle to grab Code of Laws, and then used a great scientist to lightbulb Philosophy.

... and of map size.

Can you explain this??

In my games the Oracle was never built after 1 AD I think.

Should have grabbed CS.

CS needs mathematics ;). I didn't plan for it to be that big. I found out you can easily get CS at 600 BC.... I should try different strategies and approaches in my next game.

Smaller maps = fewer opponents.

Fewer opponents = fewer competitors [for any Wonder].

On small maps, the chances are high your opponents are aggressive, non-Industrious, don't have marble and/or don't start with Mysticism. All of these increase your chances of acquiring The Oracle later.

It's a very rare occurrence, but it sometimes happens that all the planets align in just such a way to make The Oracle a later-game build.

If you optimize it is no problem ... I´ve grabbed CS at 1600 BC on emperor... :D

Yes, you get double GPP. This makes the next Great People come even sooner. Also ,IIRC, no civic cost.
