Policy trees exhausted, but now must select policy

Obviously, I have some sort of mental block or learning disability.

I've achieved all the policies in all the trees I wanted. I went the route of Rationalism and Freedom, and so Piety and Autocracy are locked.

Yet now that I've accumulated enough policy points again, the game will not let me proceed without selecting a policy, the action of which will nullify either Rationalism or Freedom and (I assume) deny me the perks I derive from those.

I realize there's a setting at the beginning of the game to delay policy acquisitions, but is this what that's for? Why would the game force me to select a locked policy and thereby obliterate the ones I like? I wanted them; that's why I chose them.

Am I just SOL here?

How many policies have you unlocked? It could be that you have unlocked only the base policy from said trees, the "opening policy" if you will. There are still 5 more policies in each tree after you take the base policy. To truly be out of picks you would have to be coming up on 2050AD and consciously decided not to build the Utopia Project and win by culture.

Thanks for the quick response!

Yes, what I meant by "exhausting" the trees is that I have every "sub-policy" for every tree, except of course Piety (because I chose Rationalism) and Autocracy (because I chose Freedom).

But the game will not move forward unless I choose a new policy. (You know, the big diamond icon in the lower right.)

Doing so, however, will mean that I will have to switch either from Rationalism to Piety or from Freedom to Autocracy because those trees are mutually exclusive. Choosing one will lock the other. And I assume I will lose its benefits as well.

Thanks again,

Lib

ETA: Incidentally, I disabled every victory condition except time.

Attention Moderator:

Could you please change the thread title to say "trees" (plural)? It's my fault for not being more clear. I've made it sound like I haven't exhausted every compatible tree when in fact I have.

Thanks very much.

It's even worse once you filled both autocracy and piety as well. I've hear others report that in sucha case your game is stuck entirely.

There should obviously be an option to not spend a policy and let it go to waste, instead of saving it or getting stuck.

thats why u always set cultural victory on - it will giv eu a win if u filled those things

Technically you have to build the utopia project before the cultural win kicks in, so the bug could still occur. Its simply a bug, pure and simple. The system needs to know that once all of the nonexclusive trees are filled it should give you the option to bow out of policies.

@ ori

Thanks for both the assistance and the information.

@Stalker0

It does indeed seem like a bug inasmuch as I'm now unable even to move on to the next turn, much less complete the game.

Is there an "official" thread where we're supposed to report this sort of bug?

That's interesting. I hadn't considered that you were going for a time victory. That is certainly game breaking. I guess until it's fixed we could all play with policy saving enabled and then resist the urge to save them up for Ren. Era trees. Of course the buffed Freedom/Tradition trees should help beat that temptation.

Okay, well... thanks everyone for your comments and help. Not particularly in the mood to start a new game now, knowing that this will inevitably happen again.

Maybe they'll fix it or something. Hope springs eternal, I guess.

Looks like you can just check the box that makes it so you don't have to choose one to progress.

But still, this is such an amazingly dumb bug. I guess no one in the office thought "Hey, what if you don't have any more social policies you want to research?"

Lots of culture = Awesome!
Too much culture = game ending bug.

I'm wondering if you could've sold off some of your culture-producing buildings and improvements to delay tree exhaustion. Shouldn't there be some culture-sucking institutions (Facebook?, Telebision?), the way unhappiness reverses progress toward a Golden Age.

I'm also wondering whether the Utopia Project begins automatically, or do you have to initiate it.

Thanks, jdog5000. I've done as you suggested and opened a thread there with a cross-reference to this one as well.

I appreciate everyone's comments and suggestions. I've started a new game with the Advanced Setting allowing me to delay policy selection. It might work. Then again, it might not. We'll see.

Am I missing something? Surely you can just switch back to your other policy afterwards? You are allowed to do that aren't you? I'm sure I've done it myself once.

But why should more culture result in more anarchies ? It is like if you Research all the techs, then you've to research all the modern/future era techs again. :(

Suppose I were to have played on and taken Autocracy to replace Freedom. Aside from the turn of anarchy, what happens to my +1 production in every city? My cheap settlers in the capital? My workers' bonuses? My game will have been built around these and after several turns with a policy I don't like, I'll have to earn my original ones all over again. That just ain't right.

have you tried right clicking to dismiss the choose policy selection icon in the news ticket?
