So now that gay marriage is legal do you guys think polyamorous marriage will ever become legal?

Guess it would make divorces & divorce settlements a lil more complicated.

Can't see the Christians causing a fuss tho, since its in the Bible.

It's certainly next on the slippery slope. The legalities are much harder. The major resistance will be anti-Muslim sentiment

If it can be demonstrated that all parties in a polygamous marriage are completely consenting to such an arrangement, I can't see any possible moral objection to it.

The problem is of course, that where such relationships occur, there is often a degree of coercion or manipulation involved.

(And then, from a legal point of view, as you point out, there is likely to be a lot of complexity when it comes to divorce and similar)

I dunno, I always thought cousin marriage might be the next thing in the US. I'm not doing any Xwedodah jokes here, I'm serious. It's already legal in half the US more or less and the main hurdle is the stigma.

Polygamous relationships might be harder from a legal standpoint to deal with.

I want to say no, but elmac's right about slipping. If corporations are people, why draw lines anywhere?

I've been seeing this all over the internet, I cant even tell if people are serious or joking anymore.

Though since I'm a yeti, I'll suggest beastiality next.

It would also complicate the current tax code regarding filing taxes jointly with a spouse.

I also think Christians in the US would oppose it because anti-polygamist arguments were used as part of their argument against same-sex marriage. Of course they don't care that polygamy is given the thumbs up in the Bible because what US Christians really want is a return to the 1950s nuclear family ideal, rather than what the Bible actually says about families.

Most of it is a collective temper tantrum.

Isn't it legal now?

Polyamory (from Greek πολύ poly, "many, several", and Latin amor, "love") is the practice, desire, or acceptance of intimate relationships that are not exclusive with respect to other sexual or intimate relationships, with knowledge and consent of everyone involved.

Isn't this pretty much an open marriage? These exist today and are legal. No?

It's not an open marriage. Its a marriage between more than two parties. You still can't cheat outside of the vows unless it's part of the deal.

I'm serious. Clearly monogamous marriage isn't working for everyone (to put it mildly, its not working for the majority of those who try it & thats just the ones who go thru the hassle & heartache of ending it officially).

I'm not sure I'd ever marry at all but if I did, why not two chicks? I'd even share 'em with a brother from another mother though the dude'd have to be cool beyond what I can even imagine with no traces of insecurity or machismo.

No it isnt adultery, as that means non consensual cheating.

And oh you @ typical Narz.

Isn't that adultery?

Already occurs in "regular" marriage.

Isn't adultery when you cheat on someone? Can't cheat on your partner if you both agreed that it's an open marriage. No?
It's a legal question. Adultery is common and may be a reason why (or symptom of) marriages fail. I think "cheating on your spouse" becomes "adultery" when the lawyers show up.

Yeah but my point is that it's not possible to cheat on your spouse, when you've both agreed that your marriage is open and that sleeping with other people is okay.

Isn't that polygamy then? You used a different term - polyamorousism - which doesn't seem to be necessarily related to marriage.

No an open marriage is not polygamy.

In an open marriage you are only married to one person, but allowed to sleep with others.

In a polygamy you are married to more than one person.

My point is that if adultery is illegal, then it's not possible to legally sleep with anyone besides your legal spouse. I think Narz meant polygamy, since you're right, polyamory isn't a legal thing, except that within a marriage it's illegal if adultery is.
