Pontoon Bridges for VP

I'd consider removing yields in my own playthrough just to stop automated workers from constantly destroying themselves for mostly negligible yields. I usually automate once my empire is pretty large, but then I'll notice I have like 5 workers for 15 cities.

If you want to keep the yields and avoid the workers to suicide themselves to build the pontoons I suggest you to substitute this in the Pontoon.sql code
Code:
INSERT INTO Builds
(Type, PrereqTech, ImprovementType, RouteType, Description, Help, Recommendation, Water, CanBeEmbarked, Kill, Time, EntityEvent, HotKey, OrderPriority, IconIndex, IconAtlas)
SELECT 'BUILD_PONTOON_BRIDGE', 'TECH_ENGINEERING', 'IMPROVEMENT_PONTOON_BRIDGE', 'ROUTE_ROAD', 'TXT_KEY_BUILD_PONTOON_BRIDGE', 'TXT_KEY_PONTOON_BRIDGE_HELP', 'TXT_KEY_BUILD_PONTOON_BRIDGE_REC', 1, 1, 0, 500, 'ENTITY_EVENT_BUILD', 'KB_Z', 98, 0, 'PONTOON_BUILD_ICON_ATLAS' UNION ALL
SELECT 'BUILD_PONTOON_BRIDGE2', 'TECH_RAILROAD',     'IMPROVEMENT_PONTOON_BRIDGE',     'ROUTE_RAILROAD',     'TXT_KEY_BUILD_PONTOON_BRIDGE', 'TXT_KEY_PONTOON_BRIDGE_HELP', 'TXT_KEY_BUILD_PONTOON_BRIDGE_REC', 1,     1,                 0,     500,    'ENTITY_EVENT_BUILD', 'KB_Z', 98,             0, 'PONTOON_BUILD_ICON_ATLAS';
This will make the workers build the pontoon in 5 turns and don't disappear instead of drowning in the sea after the completion.

Hi there! I'm trying to use the bridge to recreate Tenochtitlan but it is almost impossible to keep it from glitching (a shorter section of it shows up across the main one). The only position in which the bridge doesn't glitch is when it's horizontally. I've gotten it to work in other positions but as soon as I reload the game the shorter section appears. Any way to fix this? (I just want one bridge to appear)

Edit: using the version for BNW fixes the problem, even though I'm playing VP..

Edit 2: I had all the bridges set up and all looked pretty normal, I even had saved and reloaded the game 10+ times, but eventually all of the diagonal bridges glitched and won't go back to normal..

I don't know what you're talking about. Image?

This is what I mean: https://imgur.com/a/fYm6XXk

I created a quick game just to illustrate my point, most of the bridges in my previous game ended up somewhat like this, even the ones built by the AI. It doesn't matter which sides the bridge connects, it only looks normal horizontally and not every time.

That's weird I haven't seen that bug happened at all.

I have that exact same problem! Would you post a link to that BNW version of Pontoon Bridge you found that doesn't have that graphical glitch? I've tried every Pontoon Bridge Mod I could find and they all have that glitch for me. :(

I believe we can't trade between connected islands anymore, any one else is not able ?
I think when the Polder changes were allowed to be built on water, Pontoon Bridges were affected accidentally to prevent Caravans from trading over these type of improvements that can be pillaged and deleted, getting into a crash as they did not know how to get to the City anymore.

On another note, a tiny update has been passed.
Public Works can upgrade all Pontoon Bridge (Roads) to Railroads if it hasn't already and a few tech buff!

I posted this eons ago on steam was never given an answer, even after you did your small update.
-You can build a road onto the bridge, (and a railroad with your update) but, apart from the visual and having your units not be in the water, it does nothing else.
- Is not considered a tile for trading. So if you connected an island to the mainland, you cannot trade over that bridge with a land trade route.
-Getting onto of off a bridge onto the coast costs movement point as if you had been in water.
-Units with amphibious assault will, most of the time just cross a water tiel instead of using the birdge just because it's more movement efficient. Specially in the end game when land unit movement can become really big.
-Does not create a city connection to the capital (Now this one use to be a probleme before. But it does seem that vox populi changed city connections in the year I havent played. So now it seems to work)

seems far more appropriate that the route would just end -- there must be more to this?

Didnt even realize that was a thing with the Netherlands since I never played them with Vox Populi until 3 hours ago.
Now I find it very annoying that both polders and the pontoon bridge do not allow for land routes to go through. Very annoying. Does anyone know how to fix it + the movement problems I have described above for the pontoon bridge?

I haven't played with this in a long time -- it's these wonky rules mentioned in recent posts that ruin it for me.

Given Congress recently had a very modmod-focused round, I wonder if fixes to these things might not be approached in a future round. The issues mentioned are all under-the-hood from main branch perspective, and thus outside the scope of Congress afaik, but this would be a nice one to have working 100% as desired

If the ruleset that affected these were fixed up, there are some additional bridge models in civ 4 section... Might get the community motivated for a v2.0 of this mod

So is there at least something that can be done in the meantime to hotfix until something more official comes around?

You'll have to find sympathetic dev to do the dll work.

If it's even possible via Lua, the workarounds involved will be extensive and computationally undesirable, I think

I'm nitpicking here a little but I think this mod is too much a fantasy mod in it's overall implementation for the main community to get behind. Were there really ever "pontoon" bridges or permanent floating causeways spanning parts of the ocean, facilitating trade and general traffic? Were there any long cross-ocean bridges before the past ~century? Idk for sure but I doubt it. Certainly this kind of bridge is not made of wood and floating on canoes like we have here.

There's nothing broken in the mod afaik... It adds an improvement that enables land units to cross water tiles without embarking, and allows roads and whatnot to be built across. The way the game handles these properly-applied mod functions is what you're observing -- GitHub probably best bet to request change to how these features work for now but it's the kind of thing that doesn't always get the traction it needs over there

Imo for this mod to work well with VP, we'd need to fix the rules as mentioned but also convert into a proper "bridge" mod, no "pontoon".

Yeah, I mean that's what I want. I don't want a pontoon. I want an actual bridge to connect stuff. Just like the forts and citadels allow me to have water channels to connect stuff around. Both of these things are not just about the visuals. Some time, because of the awkward way maps can generate, being able to connect things around is VERY useful.
And has it stands right now, this pontoon mod is mostly decoration with a nice yield upgrade instead of anything useful.

the rule changes must be done in dll then somehow

to me, the art will be important as well. if we had both rules and art, this could become and every-play mod for me. Right now its an almost-never, though I do very much like the concept.

the model can probably be adapted from this:

Ok. Well youve been here for a hot minute. And a barely contribute since I only do like 4 marathon plays per year.
How can we get the ball rolling or at least find someone that can do the actual work. Even if it's just a simple mod for my personal use and not something incorporated into VP. What do we do now?
