At least according to a certain black lady in line at Popeye's that I had the pleasure of encountering today. Here's the situation:

My wife and I swung into Popeye's chicken to pick up lunch for me, my wife, our daughter, and my parents. When we get there the place is really crowded and the workers were obviously struggling to keep up with the lunch rush. Anyway, we place our order and our order number is 42. A few minutes later they call number 42, we grab our food, and start heading towards the door. While we were leaving the black lady who was number 41 and hadn't received her food yet proclaims very loudly towards us "Oh, of course the WHITE PEOPLE get their food first!" I just shook my head with a grin on my face and walked out the door.

Anyway, what I wanted to discuss is why is it every time a member of a minority gets a little bit of poor service somewhere, they automatically blame it on racism? Did this idiotic woman ever stop to think maybe they were low on the items she ordered, so they had to cook up some more and that's why it was taking so long for her food? Or maybe they were just understaffed and her order just got forgotten in the hustle and bustle? Or maybe they did call her number and she didn't hear it (it was pretty loud in there)? No, of course not. It just absolutely must be racism! The employees of Popeye's saw me walk in and quickly decided "hey, we hate black people so much, let's make sure this nice white family gets their food before this lowly black peasant here."

So CFC, do you think the above incident can be chalked up to racism? Or was this lady just an ignorant fool who tries to blame everything bad in her life on racism? I tend towards the latter given my brief experience with her.

A broader question for you to consider is: Why do some members of minorities immediately jump to racism as the reason behind every negative experience they have in their life?

This seems like a racist over-generalization to me.

And here's JR; writing his usual posts that avoid the issue raised entirely.

But you are somewhat correct. I should have worded it as "some members of minorities" rather than just "members of minorities".

Just this once though JR, pretty please with sugar on top, post something that actually contributes to the topic at hand. It would make me oh so happy.

Do you think the staff of Popeye's was acting with racist motivations? Or was this lady simply being a fool?

You were merely inarticulate, not racist. Hopefully some posters from the locked thread will see that it sometimes happens. Icing on the cake, so to speak.

As for the specific incident, I think it likely that your order was ready sooner and there are some people that see racism where it doesn't exist. There is a small possibility that her order was sandbagged a bit (either because of race or she is a known troublemaker that the workers at Popeye's were trolling).

I thought this was titled "Popeye is racist".

Expected those olf comics/cartoons, and i am disappointed :(

Me too.

I don't have enough information about that particular incident, and it's certainly possible and plausible that the reason white 42 was served before black 41 is purely logistical, but maybe that woman has experienced enough casual racism and small not-necessarily-racist-but-it certainly-looks-like-it things that her assumption is perfectly logical from her point of view.

So that's a no then, on the whole contributing to the topic at hand thing?

For some people to not accuse you of being racist, it only works if you do something that is 100% related to race such as directly specifying you won't associate with them because they're of "the wrong race".

I edited my post, but the thread is on the topic of racism and perceptions, so I think my posts have been on-topic enough. You didn't mean to come across as racist, but if a minority heard you say that statement I quoted, they would be within their rights to wonder if it was racist.

There maybe another, broader, question:
Why do some people immediately jump to [homophobia/gay agenda/the patriarchy/********s/the bourgouis/unemployed/immigrants/christians/muslims/jews/atheists/etc.] their own pet gripe with society as the reason behind [removing hyperbole here] many negative experiences they have in life?

If this is too broad, and you wish to focus specifically on members of minorities using racism to explain many irritants, then a possible reason is that they are more likely to experience genuine racism than non-minorities, and after enough negative experiences they begin to see it in places where it isn't.

Yeah "just not into you" would be one thing but, but "eww, brown boy" is an innocent brush off.

I thought this was titled "Popeye is racist!".

Expected those old comics/cartoons, and i am disappointed :(

I've never once been to Popeyes in USA but I've gone to Popeyes in Jordan and Turkey.

It always seemed kind of low rent to me in America but when in another country with limited fast food options it was ok. Likewise I never go to Hardee's in America but they got Hardee's in Erbil (Iraq) and its good. They have Texas chicken in Iraq too which is actually church's chicken in USA and actually it's not that good even in Iraq but its ok. There are better places like chicken cottage, not sure if they're connected to any chain.

Some people see racism where there isn't any. Some people make jokes about racism when they see an opportunity like the white 42 going ahead of the black 41. This could have been either one of those.

In North Carolina they have gotta wanna needa wanna have a bojangles. That's their commercial.

You should have told her that you got preferential treatment because you know the answer to "what do you get if you multiply six by nine?". :p

Maybe she just ordered something that takes longer to prepare? :dunno:

That was how I initially read the title, too.

His post is on-topic.

The other thread can always be re-opened if you ask the moderator nicely...
