Im playing as Portugal in the great scenario Age of Imperialism Deluxe made by El Justo

It was Christmas, 1894 and as the rest of Portugal and her colonies celebrated, King Carlos I worried. His prime concern came fro the British Empire, Portugal could not stand a chance against the British Lion. He new that this new age was one where the idea of survival of the fittest played a big role in the carve of Afrca, what if Portugal is not fit to survive? This was a time of new ideas, nationalism, socialism and Social Darwinism, this is an age of War, Greed, and Imperialism. Portugal's only chance was to kick around everyone who is weaker than them to become stronger, sounds easy enough, as long as we keep Britain happy.

1895​

week 1, Carlos' first act was Industrialization, factory construction started in Lisbon, Porto, and Macau, all throughout her coones Portugal built Business districts and constabularies. He hoped this would help Portugal compete with the other powers.

Carlos' Economic/Industrial plan was going smoothly. In week 21 Lisbon completed their factory and started work on he gold standard, but more importantly a great scientist was born in Lisbon, not knowing what to do with him, Carlos just had him sit outside of Lisbon. The city of Lisbon was enjoying much gain in the recent weeks.

in week 33 Protected cruisers I was researched and a factory was built in Macau.

in week 41 Lisbon completed the Gold Standard, Goa built a factory.

in week 45 Porto finished its factory

in week 49 military tradition was discovered

Carlos and other members of te Portugese government eagerly awaited the new raw materals the next year would provide.

week 17 Espionage discovered and a Rop with Britain is gained.

week 21 Railroad corporation is completed in Lisbon.

week 33 Pre-dreadnoughts I researched, got to build up the navy.

week 37 Military Academy is completed, yes there will be a war soon

Week 41 Colonial Infantry move into souther China

week 45 War with China, general Afonso Soares is put in charge of the operations

week 49 2 Chinese cavalry units were obliterated when trying to take Macau, this was the first battle of the Sino-Portuguese War, who knows where it would end, Carlos thought, will we conquer all of China, thats too optimistic, or will it completely fail and if so we are expelled from Macau, not likely, Soares is a great general and a great man, but sometimes is prone to making sudden, stupid choices.

The battle of Macau was the the first conflict of the war, in December 1896, but the War would continue until March 1898.

1897​

In Week 5 Afonso Soares led 3 units of Portuguese colonial infantry against Kunming, intelligence reports showed that it was only defended by a militia and 2 home guards, Soares led the attack, it didn't go as well as expected, the Portuguese were winning, barely. Soares then ordered that there will be no retreating, we will capture the city or die trying, and that was what they did. 3 quarters of the troops were killed or wounded, and among the dead was General Soares. But the city of Kunming was taken. Dowager Cixi was concerned now.

For now King Carlos would take command of the Portuguese armies, he ordered a census of the opposing armies and found that Portugal had:
8 colonial sentries
2 city guards
15 Portuguese colonial infantry
2 steam transports
1 protected cruiser
7 coastal gunships
2 TB-Pre 1895

China has:
1 militia
18 home guards
1 light cavalry
2 Imperial Chinese riflemen
1 steam transport

also that 1 cavalry was killed that turn, trying to take Macau

Colonial Admin II was researched in week 13

In week 17 a Chinese cavalry unit tries to retake Kunming, and is killed, also in Fuchou, coastal gunships bombard the city and destroy a steam transport, the only ship in the Chinese navy.

In week 21 Germany completed the world fair. Reinforcements from Goa land near Fuchou.

In week 33, Fuchou was surrounded and bombarded.

In week 37, Kiev hosts the first Olympics, in which athletes from Portugal did fairly well. 2 Chinese Cavalry units are killed trying to attack the besiegers of Fuchou, although some Portuguese were killed.

In week 41 a Portuguese colonial Cavalry Unit is wounded while killing an Imperial Chinese Rifleman, the city cant hold much longer, an infantryman however dies trying to do the same thing.

Advanced Mining techniques were researched in week 45

In week 49 the Chinese launch 2 failed attacks, one on Kunming, another on Macau

1898​

In week 1 4 infantry units assault the city, half of them die, half kill the enemy.

In week 5 a Cavalry unit kill a city guard, an infantry does the same, and then another infantry is killed trying.

In week 9 however, the defenders were annihilated2 cavalry units kill an Imperial Rifleman and 3 militia, the city is ours.

Peace was then made with China and they gave us 165 gold (15 pt) China lost their honor, as Carlos said after the peace, there is no way we should have won, if I had led the Chinese forces, Portugal would have lost Macau. He then praised the bravery of the veterans of the war, and said that one day we will take it all.

Throughout the Empire there was a short break from the constant wars

In week 21 Prag completed the Great Novel, we research Colonial Administration III

In week 29 The British force us to give them 100 gold, we don't want to lose Goa, do we?

In week 37 Our agent in Port-Au-Prince is killed, we still have our other 2 agents in China and he Boer Republics

In week 41 Destroyers I is researched, and Portugal is now a Red Cross Member.

In week 1 Intelligence reports confirm that that Santo Domingo has 3 home guard in the city, and it was the same for Port-Au-Prince, in week 5 Pre-Dreadnoughts II was researched.

In week 9 it is War, we lad troops near Port-Au-Prince

In week 13, 3 Cavalry and 3 Infantry attack the city, 2 Cavalry units die, but the city was taken, they would have to heal before hey would attack Santo Domingo, but for now Haiti is under the grasp of Portugal.

In week 17 a Wooden screw frigate and a steam transport were destroyed in the Port of Santo Domingo

In week 21 Maxim guns were researched

In week 25 the shocking statement came "The German Empire declared war on the British", soon after the Austrians joined in, too. many battles are visible in our line of sight.

In week 37 Industrialization I was researched, and a Cavalry unit is almost wiped out, but they took out a rifleman there would be more assaults coming in the following weeks.

In week 41 3 Infantry units attack Santo Domingo, only one is destroyed, all that is left is a 1 HP militia

that Militia was destroyed by a Cavalry unit in week 45, the city was ours, and so was the country. President Ulyses Heureaux was tied and thrown into the sea, most Haitians and Dominicans just went on with their lives.
It also has been seen that the Germans lost Lome (Benin) to the British Empire. Portugal wishes to remain neutral.

with the War done Portugal awaited a new century.

Portugal's got to be one of the tougher assignments, just judging by the maps I've seen.

1900​

on new years day King Carlos made a speech for the occasion:
Friends, Patriots, fellow citizens of the Portuguese Empire, we begin a new Century, one that will be full of great achievement by our people. We have made much progress over the years, in science, in industry, in the Army, and in the economy. 5 years ago I was worried about our nation's ability to defend itself, now, however I have no such doubts. I put trust in you my people, just as you have put our trust in me. I am very proud to be leader of a people as great as you. We have gone a long way in the last few years, we took part of China, even though they had more soldiers in Area, then we conquered Hispaniola, together we will lead Portugal to greatness.

the people cheered, there was a strong feeling of Nationalism in air, but some people were a little suspicious, they were worried that Carlos would start ruling as a tyrant, instead of a Constitutional Monarch. Indeed their fears were realistic, Carlos had been growing in power where in other countries the Royalty was gradually losing influence. In 1897 he had taken supreme command of the Army, but many chose to overlook it because he was a successful strategist.

week 1 Field guns I was researched, and a great Scientist Jose Tomas de Sousa Martins (that guy that we left outside Lisbon in '95) hurried Aspirin, marking the beginning of a golden age in Portuguese Science.
In war-related news, the Germans took Aba (Nigeria), and the British took Kaiser Willhelmsland (Papua New Guinea).

King Carlos ordered a census of the Empire, and these are the results:
population: 1,134,100,000
Area 2%, British have 20% (those darn Brits!)
population: 3%, Britain has 22%
Victory Points: 276, 12th place, Russia in 1st has 450
Portugal is the tenth most powerful nation
approval: 57%, 26th in he world

week 5, Aspirin is completed, giving Portugal the Theory of Flight and Mountain Guns.
Hamburg completes the Kaiserliche Marine Academy.

week 13 Russia enters the war on the side of the Germans and Austria-Hungarians against the British Empire, this war is going global.

week 17, the Wright flyer gave us Howitzers I and Armored cruisers II

week 33 German and Austria-Hungarian alliance made peace with Britain, after losing Aba, Germany lost the one thing it gained.
Light Cruisers researched,
Lisbon completes the X-Ray, giving us Electronics and submarines II

week 45 Germany demands of us 100 gold, the Portuguese ambassador laughed and laughed, then he said we'll give it to you only if you take it from our cold dead hands. The Lisbon times, and many other Papers throughout the Empire reported that Germany has no backbone.

week 49 War With Lowlands was a complete surprise to both the Portuguese People and the Lowland people, but the Portuguese army was prepared and confident, the Dutch and Belgians freaked out when they saw Portuguese troops land on Lowland-controlled Islands in the Caribbean and in Indonesia, but more shocking was the mass of troops that moved right next to Leopoldville, the Capital of the Belgian Congo.
3 cavalry units attacked, 1 was successful, but the other 2 were destroyed, also Portuguese spies were killed trying to conduct espionage.
The Lowlands launched a desperate offensive on Vila Luso, but it was repelled.
