possible explanation

Hi guys,

I've been thinking... Is it in any way possible that the random crashes (either to desktop or complete restarts) or programmed in by Firaxis? Remember the game XIII (I think it was this one), if it detected something abnormal (for example noticed a different number of bytes in his executable) it didn't immediatly asked for the correct cd, but gradually diminished it's graphical quality over time (this is way more difficult to crack, because you can't tell where exactly the check is done).
I know we are not supposed to discuss piracy (and if any mod thinks this posts goes to far please delete this asap), but I would like to know if there are many people with a legal version (and who have NO extra software running because their dvd/cd driver is incompatible with the copy-protection from the original cd's/dvd's) who are experiencing these problems?
If there are, please reply here (I'm not asking for people who did pirate the game, only asking for people who did NOT pirate the game).

I haven't seen any posts that suggest this, it is just an idea. (There are so many people with random restarts/crashes that I'm thinking in the direction of an anti-piracy measurement, otherwise Firaxis would have noticed the problems in her beta tests)

Greetings,
Rob.

I sincerely doubt this is a possibility, i have several friends who have pirated it and it runs perfectly.

how ironic that with a legit version it is unplayable for me. I mean seriously this is the kind of crap that turns people toward piracy - why waste money on a game if there is no guarantee it will even work for you?

That's actually a great point FruMp.

Imagine someone looking at these boards and seeing all the complaints etc They would be much more inclined to download the torrent of this game and try it out first than to part with their hard earned cash

I have the pre-order edition! So no piracy for me.

My system is old though. I have no problems with game play but random restarts.

No piracy for me. My PC exceeds the recommended requirements and still it randomly crashes. At least I got the graphics fixed and autosave works, so I do not lose much, but still it is very annoying, no real fun playing it. In my 19 years playing computer games I never experienced such a piece of crap. It reminds me a bit of the times of DOS-games constantly editing the config.sys and autoexec.bat files to get the different games running. These times should be gone and it is much more difficult for me to tweak windows. As there are people who can play it without problems I doubt it is an anti-piracy measurement. I bought the game and it does not run correctly, but your thought is reasonable. This happened before. There was a game that was shipped with a corrupt anit-piracy code that did not allow to play the game even for the people who bought it.

i'm actually suprised to learn that everyones having problems with it. I figured i would be the one with the most problems as my system lacks any service packs or fixes. Yet i play for 12+ hours a day and ctd's are minimal, maybe 1 per game, or none at all. It's just plain whack. :crazyeye:

Thank you,
I just thought of it as a possible explanation. Because these bugs are really something that should have been noticed during the betas. But since people with original installations (you for example) are replying that the problem is definately there with the shipped versions I doubt it is an anti-piracy thing.
I'm a little disappointed in the fact that Firaxis hasn't made a statement about the problems (so we at least know they are working on a fix).

Rob.

As someone who bought the game I can wholly attest to the fact that it is, quite frankly, buggy as heck. I can get it to start without a hitch and can play for some time without a problem, but the moment I get into late game it slows to a crawl and randomly reboots my system which is decidedly way uncool.

However, to turn your question on it's head, I wonder if the Starforce protection contributes at all to the memory bloat or instability of this product....

CIV 4 doesn't use Starforce, it uses Safedisc.
