Sayounara if your haiku was written this way it would follow the format:

It is confusing
I feel the light is dimming (you got the 7 syllables right this time)
Syllables are high

I really don't know a good way to explain what a syllable is, so just follow what Sultan said.

Yes, a syllable is "a word or a part of a word pronounced with single, uninterrupted sounding of the voice" or "any of the parts into which a written word is often divided, as at the end of a line, in approximate conformity to the spoken syllables".

So to take Sim One's example:

It l is l con l fu l sing
I l feel l the l light l is l dimm l ing
syll l a l bles l are l high

5, 7, 5.
