Pre-EkoNES: Fall From Heaven

I claim Isle 19 as Rinwel isle! Keep the tradition! :p

Good luck, in again as a future NPC or maybe a fill in.

Excellent, you can never have too many reserve players.

I am just waiting for LDiCesare to choose a start location and then all locations will be final and the new maps will be up.

Are you still accepting offerers for stand ins?
Edit: As yes, post is still there. So I'm willing to offer my soul as a Stand in Player.

It says "standin players required" on the first, second, or third posts

I'm not on the list, but I said I'd be a stand in a while ago. Offer still stands.

Ok, both added. Nice to see this is still generating interest despite the current state of the OP.

Sorry, I have trouble posting here when I have no internet connection.
Since you want me to take 27, I'll pick that. Not that it matters much as long as I start on the same continent as most, although I think 50 and 48 look like nice places.

Competition!

I already have a reasonable list of resources, but to further increase the diversity of the game I am asking for players to contribute ideas for extra ones.

List as many as possible, which should be from real life and should have been available in ancient to late medieval to even the early colonial era anywhere in the worldrldThey can also be from a fantasy setting or made up, but in this case you will have to tell me what the resource actually is. Likewise, if you give me the name of some obscure plant, please tell me what it is or was actually used for.

Feel free to offer seemingly obvious ones, as I could have easilly over-looked something, although rare (so perhaps less obvious) resources are also needed. Resources could be naturally occuring, or man-made, so long as man-made resources are in-keeping with the setting.

I need a lot of resources, so the more the better.

Every player that contributes (with a short list of perhaps 10 or so) will get a small bonus at the start of the game, probably in gold. Players that contributed a lot, with useful ideas will receive more gold. (therefore, if you send me a list of 10 different species of deer, you will get a limitted bonus as it is unlikely I will need 10 different kinds of deer, however similiar resources are good to an extent). The player that contributes the most will receive a gold bonus and an additional (low value) discovery to reflect your contribution.

There may be similiar competitions over the next few weeks to help boost the content of the NES and give me ideas I may not have thought of. I make no promises that all or any of your ideas will be used however, but don't worry you will still get a bonus.

Naturally occuring resources all need to be matched with an improvement to ''harvest'' them. These can be: quarries, mines, farms, pastures, plantations, fishing fleets, fishing nets (rivers and lakes), hunting parties, logging teams, etc. Although some resources have unique improvements so it's fine if they don't fit in with any of these.

Man-Made resources need to be paired up with a suggested building where it could be made. For example, Furniture -> Carpenter.

Resources that I particulary need are ones that can be fished, ones that can be mined or quarried, ones that can be man-made, and ones that can be hunted, but don't just send me these, I need extra resources in all categories.

tin (mined), copper (mined), bronze (smelted), iron (mined), steel (smelted), salt (mined or from the sea), charcoal (mined or burnt from wood), guano (picked up by hand for burning), gold (mined), silver (mined), mithril (mined?), jade (mined)...
Edit:
tar (resin, collected from trees), sugar (made from different plants), maple syrup (like tar, collected from trees), wood (duh - timber in particular), bamboo
papyrus (hand-made, needs bamboo or similar plants), parchment (hand made, needs tanners), paper (hand mande, needs presses), ink (can be fished or built from minerals: mine + some processes I don't master).
Also: Hunted animals worth taming include:
Camels, llamas, cows, sheep, donkeys, horses, elephants, pigs, dogs, hen.
Mules have to be bred from horses + donkeys.

There are many resources that can be obtained in different ways when you think of it (ink, salt, sugar...)

Forgot my home famous product: millstones (quarried). Some were exported from France to New Zealand. Other precious stones include marble (quarried or taken from ruins), regular construction stone (quarried or taken from ruins). Bricks require ovens to build (noone to this day can build bricks like those of the Romans).

Forgot to say, please PM or email your suggestions, but nice work LDi.

Had all those pasture animals though. I think I've got every animal worth keeping domestically. EDIT: Except Hens :goodjob:

I shall think of a list too... Not that it would help me or anything but just for fun ;)

Guys, resources need to be specific. Things like ''wood'' and ''fish'' are not good enough. I need types of wood and types of fish.

Too generalistic things won't be counted for your bonus, neither will copper, tin, gold, silver, iron etc. I'm getting these from everyone, and already have all of them. Those are just too obvious.

EDIT: Very good contribution from thomas :goodjob:
EDIT2: Good work from LDi as well.

Keep it coming guys!

EDIT3: To put things into perspective, thomas sent around 100 resources ideas. I could do with a list of common, semi-valuable gems. I could also do with a list of things that could be hunted, types of deer, boar, whatever, things hunted for fur/feathers/meat. I also need a list of staple crops besides the ones found in FFH. Also, man-made things. What did people make in ancient/medieval times to sell? Things like candles, glassware are what I'm looking for.

Your resources are great, a really big help. Now lets see if someone can't just steal the prize from your grasp :p.

Also, due to the latest upheaval of the game's structure, cities will not be tied to regions, resources will each have an ''abundancy'', which is the total number of them that can be extracted from the region, and population will almost certainly return to a ''slightly realistic version'', as it will be too much work and monotony for me to upgrade the population stat of 50, 60 settlements each and every turn. Also, ''health'' is possibly going to be removed and replaced by ''population limits'', which are how many population points you can have in a settlement. These are provided by health buildings and management buildings, representing better organisation and services. Most buildings will have a required population for them to be built in a settlement.

Regions will still be used for resource placement, movement, and defense purposes. The ''abundancy'' of resources is there to make sure that whoever ends up with a gold resource doesn't spam four or five settlements in one region and fill all of them with gold mines. I want to create a balance where you have to decide whether you want to cluster your settlements in one or two regions, or whether you want to expand into lots of regions for lots of different resources (as resource bonuses do not stack and multiples are only useful for trading).

NOTE: It will be possible to only partly own a region. There may be three settlements in a region, each controlled by a different player.

I know I'm being vague here, I will try to write a final rule set at the weekend or when-ever I happen to be free. All ideas and comments regarding rules, my new ideas or anything else are welcome and appreciated.

Thanks again to everyone who's sent lists of resources, you've been a big help :goodjob:.

Was my resources helpful? Because I am about to send you 30 more of them...
