Pre-Turn 144 - This is going to hurt!

Ankka, for other teams. But CDZ and C3B will not take on more people,so we can as well let them bleed reputationwise.

The people still loves us !!!
 Poor citizens. Do they not read the newspaper?

We need to withdraw as many units to KD as possible. Thankfully all of our leaders got out of the capital safely. Let's pull a WWII Berlin here: we're going to lose, but we're going to make it as painful as possible. Should the warriors outside Unlucky Harbor retreat back into there? Or will the mountains give better defense?

They renamed my suggested city name of Or. :(

I think Germany was like that in 1944, and we are turn 144 right ?
After all, we are Fanaticans ?

Whoever plays it, make sure you move our eastewrn fleet up, and get ready to leave Fanatica from the west with a settler, we will still go for an island on both sides.

Why on earth was the cavalry taken to the north? In KD they could have delayed the inevitable a lot longer than fighting Immos.

But, I don't want to see us going for some small island to wait until marines. We'll fight, and when we have fought, we'll lose. We won't do like GCA (and CGN) in the MSDG.

Battle report
Vet MedInf in Kamina attacks elite GS and kills it. 1 HP left.
Vet AC attacks lonely veteran immortal and kills it. All 5 HP left.
Vet galley attacks C3B vet galley and kills it. 1 HP left.
Vet galley attacks C3B reg galley but gets killed. C3B galley promotes.
Vet galley attacks C3B vet galley and kills it. 2 HP left.

I can't send the savegame, because I can't log in with msdg@civfanatics.net anymore.

The plan is to batter through with the galleys to deploy a unit on one of the two islands and let the settler come later. Most important is to secure the island a.s.a.p. if it's not already taken.

Perhaps one or two galleys should go back, because there are only three galleys near Khazad-Dûm. There are now ten galleys (of which two are damaged) up and due north.

... A SoD with about 20 impi and 50 or so horsemen got sent over at him, and all his Gallic Swordsmen could do was wet themselves. ...

I still had won though. Because had build Aqueducts, Granaries, and Marketplaces. ;)

... One of the things that I found a little frustrating is that I could never tell what the game strategy of our Civ was. I tend to think that we didn't actually have one. If our strategy was conquest, why didn't we persue it? If our strategy was research, why didn't we have a scientific civ? If our strategy was expansion, why did we stop expanding towards C3B and why didn't we colonise islands?

I will try to answer that and some other "deep analysis" to the best of my knowledge.

Any kind of early rush in PBEM requires tight build, at least more tight than your opponent to get more workable tiles than the opponent as early as possible. For tight build, a settler factory is required and we did not have one in this game. Besides, although ICS has been suggested to the team a number of times (and backed by Kuningas to an extent), it was repeatedly rejected. This is a required part of the early conquest/rush strategy and the only way to outproduce the opponent.

Also, there has been repeated discussion of whether to settle the DMZ and it was decided that DMZ should not be settled. This has prevented a possibility of early rush by C3B though which was a possibility to consider. We were not "rushed" and this is a small victory both for management and diplomacy considering our extremely weak position early in the game. I still think that if we were rushed with Immortlas, we could have lost despite having SoZ. So, basically our diplomacy (DZ and Emp) had saved us from humility of early elimination.

To tell the truth, I don't know how to play a game against a human opponent without horses. Well, against AI it might be possible but not against a human player. Once we knew we have horses and C3B does not, the aim could have been to exploit that advantage to the fullest by having knights. This was our only advantage against C3B which was real.

I also do not believe that a strong human opponent can be taken by surprize or some sophisticated plan while having neither economical nor military advantage over that opponent while being inferior in both areas. Someone can think he is smart and win just because of this but this cannot be true in a demogame. There are many smart minds working together on the other side and udnerestimating the opponent and overestimating your side is a sure way to disaster and loss.

The intermediate city builds and layout of the land ("measured" by other teams) as has been described in the UN forum by Dr Alimentado, dictated other builds and all development. The city build had been suboptimal either for early rush or for subsequent Feudalism government since both require more dense build. The city placement was too wide and it was very difficult to control the happiness with a single luxury we had. Hence, comes the other civilian builds which are nor required for a dense build but are required for the city pattern which we are having in this game.

So, the game evolved like dictated by "the way of the land" and by placement of cities ("will of people") especially the initial core of 5-6 cities. Wish it were different! The only obvious and possible plan was survival and defense coupled with limited expansion and some research. The lost case it had been by all means if any offense would come up from our side. Hence, swaying CDZ or CGN and persuading them to eliminate C3B was the only way out. Trying to attack C3B and making this kind of plans was apparently a suicidal move after the contact with CDZ has been made. If all troops which we had were kept at home defending, this could have at least discouraged CDZ/CGN from invasion and/or decmated their landing force. However, by no means it could have changed the final outcome of the game.

Instead of thinking "what has been done wrong so that we lost" I would put it this way: "What has been done right that we survived that long?"
