I won't comment on his GDR conspiracy assertion, however

Honestly, it's not even a big deal. Worst Case Scenario - If you can't rename Cities, it will take like 5 seconds in the SDK to change that and a day or two tops for a mod comp to be released that changes it...

That's a relief. I'm sure they wouldn't keep that feature out. It's not like Danzig and Constantinople are still around.

I don't do it often, but when playing on Earth maps it helps to rename cities you conquer to their corresponding city name for that geographic location. It helps keeping track of cities much easier. Especially on huge or gigantic maps when you decide to go for the largest empire in the world.
