Priests' canonicals

I was watching a discussion on tv between various priests of different religions(the topic they were discussing is irrelevant).
Anyway, I realized that some priests' canonicals and look could be considered ultra-old-looking/old fashioned(since there was no update in thousand of years) and barbarian, respectively.

Keep in mind that I'm not reffering specifically to what priests wear when they're in church and do their job, but what they wear outside on the street. I'm seeing the whole affair from an aesthetically view on our modern society, and how much their street-clothes fit in.

Anyway, let's begin with the religion that is dominant here, the Orthodox Christian religion.
What can I say? Can't the priests decide to start wearing something better than that? Even if they want to keep it, can't they start cut their beards to make them smaller, for God's sake, and not look like barbarians?(ok, they do so at a degree, but after their beards are already long enough).

Muslims: what I said about the Orthodox Christians, with the difference that their canonicals are white-looking instead of black.

Catholics: They're better when walking on the street, since if they're not close, you cannot recognise them right away. A certain improvement over the previous examples.

Bhudists: I don't remember well what their priest was wearing at the street, maybe he was wearing normal civilian clothes.

Luthirans:(German) Now, I'M IMPRESSED! Not only the Luthiran priest was wearing NORMAL civilian clothes, BUT the priest were a W O M A N!!! That's what I'd call PROGRESS of the human specie!!!
Allowing a woman to be a priest! Haven't men ruled religion and churches JUST ENOUGH YET and decide and make men rules? :mischief: :mischief: :mischief:

Jewish: That half-hat they wear on their head is, somewhat, rediculous to me: can't they have a normal-size hat that would look better? Their beards are also barbarian like that of the Orthodox priests.

Anyway...I just wanted to share it with you and hear your opinion. I don't hide it that the Luthiran priest-female impressed me(Luthirans allow both sexes to become priests, apparently, and they're not force their priests to wear canonicals outside the church).

In the LDS Church, those who hold the priesthood will wear a white shirt and tie (often a suit as well) in church, and their normal work or casual clothes (as we have no professional clergy) outside church.

Women in our church don't hold the priesthood, but they are teachers, preachers, and ministers just as much as men are.

@Eran: I searched about "LDS" and I found out it's "The church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". What the "latter-day" stands about, it doesn't recognise the old saints(or I got confused and don't know what I'm saying...)?

No, the idea is that the primitive church (ie the New Testament church) referred to its members as saints. One of our key beliefs was that this church eventually slid into apostasy and ceased to be the true church as led directly by Christ. It was then restored in 1830 through Joseph Smith. Thus the members are called "Latter-day Saints", ie saints of the latter as opposed to earlier days. "Latter-day" also refers to the fact that Christ will be returning soon ("soon" historically speaking, anyways).

Also, we don't venerate Catholic saints particularly, many of them were good people but other than that just people.

EDIT: Eran beat me to it.

Ok, thank you both, Eran of Arcadia and aussieboy for your explanations and answers. It's good to learn new things and hear new opinions.

Protestants in general don't wear any fancy garb.

So, the only ones that allow a woman to become a priest is the Lutheran church? Just curious. Is it written somewhere at the Bible that women aren't allowed to become priests, and why? If so, the Lutheran Bible doesn't have that part?

As with a lot of LDS doctrine, this is based not on the Bible but on what we believe is modern revelation. Only men can hold the priesthood as such (the power to act directly on behalf of God) to perform ordinances such as baptism, but like I said women can minister (ie visit other members in need) or preach and teach in church.

As far as I know Lutherans don't view the priesthood in the same sense that we do, it is just the authority to run the church for them.

As with everything protestant, it depends on the denomination. A fair few denominations do allow them though. In fact, I can probably think of more that do then don't.

There is a passage saying that a leader should be a man with good children, but it is disputed.

But i like what they are wearing, it makes them unique and you can always recognize a orthodox priest / muslims. I think they should remain as they are. Fashion is irelevant. They are priests and vanity is a sin.

This is really one thing they should change around here. (Orth. Christianity here also) I don't see any reason why they won't allow a woman to be a priest.
And i don't want to hear that it says "God knows what" in the Bible. Just think of the circumstances in wich the Bible was writen. Think of that time.

Maybe it's just me but i would rather see all priests have canonicals. I hate this cosmopolitanism where everybody conforms themselves to everybody like a flock of mindless sheep.

Black shirt, Roman collar? I thought that was pretty easily recognizable...

Not all the time. I've seen my parish priest in a regular polo shirt, albeit with a Roman collar.

Yeah, I've seen mine without the Roman collar, even--just dressed like any normal person would be.

Although the Catholic priests and brothers I had in high school had Roman collars, the parish priest-turned-professor and one of the rectors I had in college who was a brother always wear "civilian clothes" as appropriate to the situation.
