Prince of the World #1: Frederick

How should I settle scandinavia? This is what I am going to do at the moment, any suggestions are welcome:

What does everyone think?

Settle the copper city first to block Cathy out. Have you got currency yet? That's an important tech. It allows you to build cash in case you overexpand early.

Build the GLH asap. I assume you've got sailing. After GLH, make sure you have 3 or more cities on the island. Then your economy will be fine as long as you focus on coastal cities.

I know sorry, I have been extremely busy with my UNI applications. I have done the round, I will write it up for next weekend and I will resume the game at a far quickened pace. As all of University stuff is nearly done now. I didn't even have time to read the King Of The World thread daily, now that means im busy! lol

Ok lets get this started:

We started this round by moving our settler into his eventual position:

Frederick hoped hamburg would become key in the research towards better war technology, meanwhile Berlin accidentally created a scout:

Sometime later the Great Wall was finished and france started on a galley for our eventual war on england:

You may of noticed Berlin was building another settler, he was given a stick and told to go and form a settlement called Munich:

Civ4ScreenShot0031.jpg

I decided to beeline Monarchy as I was bound to encounter serious happiness problems with the amount of food in most of my cities:

Civ4ScreenShot0035.jpg

The focus of Germany's empire turned to infrastructure with a worker:

Civ4ScreenShot0036.jpg

and a workboat:

Civ4ScreenShot0037-1.jpg

Being created in Madrid and Rome respectively with the workboat moving to madrid to work the fish north of madrid:

Workers started building cottages to help with the great research effort:

Meanwhile the Galley was finished, and the axemen were raring to go! It was time for Elizabeth to meet her demise...

Civ4ScreenShot0054.jpg

Just a warrior for defense....

Civ4ScreenShot0063.jpg

Why am I not surprised that at 95% the Axeman got killed! Oh well there was one waiting to reinforce encase of such a calamity and London fell:

Civ4ScreenShot0066.jpg

A great prophet was born who was sent to madrid to go and create a very big temple thing, meanwhile Frederick got on board with this religion thing. Apparently hinduism would make the peasants happy:

Civ4ScreenShot0069.jpg

Rome was building a lighthouse for obvious reasons, it would then move onto building the oracle. Granary's were being spawned throughout the empire to help with the growth of the nation!

Civ4ScreenShot0075.jpg

The lighthouse was made in London and a settler was started to expand up into the barbaric Celts lands:

Civ4ScreenShot0081-1.jpg

A look from above shows Settlers being made all over the empire:

Civ4ScreenShot0089.jpg

Finally we can implement a true monarchy, Frederick sat on his throne surveying his empire. The military would act as his iron fist forcing smiles onto the faces of any peasants who would dare be unhappy!

The settlers were sent out to settle their respective spots, cologne was formed:

And Frankfurt was created:

Things became quiet for many years, granary's were made and Courthouses were now on the agenda. The Hindu temple was also being constructed to spread the one true faith even further:

So as you can see there is another settler on the way, Europe has not only been secured but is now growing into a true empire. Should I be thinking about a more violent approach to expanding or should I just get on with the rexing? As always your advice is welcome and probably needed.

What about cathy, should kill her next and the greeks, alex is still alive is'nt he? after that maybe egypt .... REXing can wait for later, we can take care of scandanavia and theres even land in south america, africa & australia for that.

So i say no :):):):):)-footing, lets go kill some more people until our economy crashes :D

Personally, on an Earth map like this, I would res into scandinavia, grab 2 cities in Northern Africa, grab the city in Ireland, and just tech out to a massive lead. That is, until you get bored and start running cavalry vs. longbows, and panzers vs. musketmen and riflemen.

Yeah I would continue to expand, claim all of Scandinavia and continue your tech mastery. One thing to note on this map is it is very possible to gain voluntary vassals with a large enough power rating. That is very useful in securing large blocks of land - Cathy and Mansa Musa are very quick to bow down to foreign powers and both are useful. Cathy can field some impressive, if technologically limited, stacks to assist in campaigns in Eurasia, and Mansa, well, he's Mansa. He'll help tech for you and keep Hatty hemmed in a bit.

Rex and Tech! Great early war run. You have some fantastic city sites now.

If I may suggest an example of :hammer::hammer::hammer::hammer::hammer: time, here's what I did as Frederick on Earth 18 once, and man, was it fun. Destroyed Mongolia in 3 turns and vassalized China after 1 city, good times......

Well, my point being, if you see easy pickings, eat, eat, eat :goodjob:

In this case, after taking most of Europe(I went Greece, France, Rome, Spain, England) and arming my borders with Russia, and preparing an invasion force, I got bored and saw that Egypt was waaaay weak. One DOW later, Egypt is mine. That's when I really took off. DOWed on Saladin because he didn't have longbows yet and took Turkey and Syria/Israel/Jordan/Lebanon from Sal and limited him to Arabian desert cities, and Somalia. After that, I rexed into Africa, and took even useless desert cities. He did get one last city, in East Africa, but by that time, I had been teching like a fiend and had colonized South America(not sure which came first tbh), and I smashed Saladin apart with rifles and cannons, while finishing up on settling Iceland, more of Scandinavia, and Ireland. Meanwhile, I have tons of cash, Cyrus has been at war with India for years, India offers vassalage, I accepted, and used my military to wreck Persia into a hellhole wasteland that owned parts of Indonesia, and one lone city in Siberia, who was then vassalized(cba to chase him down with transports). Meanwhile, I had expected a better fight from Persia, and had tanks infantry and artillery rolling towards South Asia. A few turns later, I DOW on Quin and take over one city, the next turn, he vassalizes, and a while ago, Russia and Mali had become voluntary vassals. Only free nation was the Aztecs, Mongols, and Japs(Inca and Americans where vassals of Monty). Meanwhile, I was at modern infantry(I was teching like a fiend ) and DOWed on Mongolia. I took all of Mongolia within 3 or 4 turns, and started dropping corporations that gave culture ASAP to stop Chinese culture rexing. Meanwhile, I had built an airport in Colombia and was dropping off 10-15 modern armors in the city per turn. I would have DOWed on Monty but the game became too laggy, and once I had some border pops from my conquered Mongol cities, I won domination.

What the hell is the point of such a big summary? Take a risk and watch it blow out of proportions. I played that game as a semi-shadow of yours, actually.

An extremely minor nitpick (to the point where it could be called a different option rather than an objectively better strategy)... Did London have anything worth taking? If it was just a mediocre Pop 5 city, this early in the game, it may have been worth razing and refounding a bit to the west, to grab the Crabs and the western French Dye and so as not to conflict with Paris' BFC so much. Then again, if the city had a wonder or two, or even some reasonable infrastructure, maybe it was worth keeping.

Outside of that, fantastic job making Europe your oyster. My suggestion would be to make Russia your next target. Cathy can become, maybe not a monster, but certainly a contender if left unchecked, so check her. Time is on your side regarding Alexander. He'll fade into obscurity if left to rot. Just make sure you hit Egypt before the dawn of the Gunpowder Age. Before that, owing to her lack of metals, Hattie is limited to Archers and Chariots, and is easy pickings. If you're beating your head against Rifles, though, she can be a tough nut to crack.

Its a very good point Neal, I need to be more aware about city placement generally so I'm glad you brought it up. It doesn't have anything of value in it really, so it would probably of been better to move it west as you suggested. Nevertheless we must press on! :)
