Hi.

New to posting, not totally new to modding. Can anyone assist me in fixing War of the Ring for Mac? I've got several other mods to work but this one seems to be above my abilities. It does look like a killer mod btw.

Appreciate it.

Are we talking about this one?

I've downloaded and unzipped it and placed the folder and .biq files in my OS X system, in ~/Documents/Civilizaiton 3 Complete/Scenarios/. It loads and starts a game. Where do you hit problems?

I guess that my experience with various mods had been sufficiently bad that I no longer even try to download them, except for using the maps for other things, after running them through my Windows game editing box, and stripping off all of the added stuff.

The Mod I can get to work is The Return of the Shadow: The War of the Ring. So far that seems to be the only customized version of Middle-earth that has the map and all the cities pre-planted.

Any new ideas?

Sorry, you will have to give a little information if you want any assistance here!

I tried to guess which mod you are complaining about, I downloaded and tested it, and it worked as far as I went.

If I guessed right, then what happens if you try to use it? If I guessed wrong, then which one *do* you want help with?

Sorry. Missed pronounced. Return of the Shadow: War of the Ring does NOT work for me. I tried downloading it and put the documents in what I believe to be the right folder:
Conquests --- Scenarios --- ... I just get the standard error mistakes when I launch any other mod that isn't completely downloaded in the right place.
If you have any tips, I would be most gracious.

Any chance of a link to it? I can't see it in the Completed Mod Packs forum.

Downloading it now.

I normally try installing into ~/Documents/Civilization 3 Complete/Scenarios/ first. I *know* the designer says put it in the program directory, but Aspyr don't play by those rules. They have tried (not always successfully) to arrange for C3C to work with mods installed where I suggest, since the folder structures in Mac C3C are significantly different from those in Windows C3C.

I'll be back with my findings shortly.

Please note that the mod I tried out and linked in post #85 has a Middle Earth map, and pre-built cities, and the usual LOTR tribes. Did you try it?

[UPDATE]
Yeah. It fails with FILE NOT FOUND "Art\Units\Warg Rider\WarriorRunFoot1.wav"

Is that what you see? BTW, it would be helpful if you can say what errors you are experiencing, rather than just saying it "doesn't work"!

There's no file of the above name, but there is WarriorRun.amb. I've seen this sort of thing before. I think it's to do with the strange way that separate .wav sounds are compiled into sequences in .amb files. Mac Civ3 has difficulty dealing with these files sometimes. I don't have an easy answer. You can try copying the missing files from the main application folder/Civilization III Game Data/Art/Units/Warrior/, but I suspect you will just keep getting the same problem with other files. If you are dedicated enough, you might eventually get it to run ... rather you than me!

You're right. I am not giving much information. Here's what I know. With this scenario (Return of the Shadow) there are 4 biq files that set up the basis of the scenario: Gondor, Arnor, Shire and the rest (Ents, Mordor, Dwarves etc). So when I open up a game with any of those Civilizations, it loads up to the point that you can see the map and the corresponding cities of you civ. But then the game fails giving you an error message. (One of which is the one you have listed above.) However the error message changes depending on the civilization you start the game with.

There are also 3 different biq files that are inside the game file folder: thewarofthering, thewarofthering-beta, thewarofthering-betaback. These files, if taken out of the folder and left directly under the scenarios file and not in scenarios - warofthering folder. These files fail and leave similar error messages. (mostly wav files, thewarofthering asked for a swordsman.INI file(?)

I'll tell you what I think might be a problem and you as the expert can tell me if its logical or just claptrap.:
When setting up Aeldrik's WW2-XL Europe scenario you had to manually install a good number of unit files. Half of them from the web, and the other half from a folder already installed from the C3C cd. After putting those files together where indicated by the creator, the scenario worked and its a good one.

So what if in Return of the Shadow, these missing files could be installed manually from other sources? Maybe from LOTMs which may have some of the same files.

Just food for thought.

The file that my error message says is missing is available. It's in the main application folder, in Civ3 Data/Art/Units/Warrior/. If I had started with a different scenario I would have seen a different error message first, because the starting units are different, so the game goes looking for unit files in a different order.

You are correct in suggesting that you can find the missing files if you go hunting. But how do you know which files you need to find? The only way I know is to hit each error in turn and fix it ... one at a time. My point was that this is a tedious exercise, as you have to start the game, load the scenario, get an error message, find and install the missing file, then repeat.

Even when you have persuaded the game to start and play the first turns, you are likely to hit a later error as a new unit becomes available somewhere in the scenario, exposing more missing files.

IF YOU’RE ASKING SOMEONE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO INSTALL A MOD FOR YOU OR YOU'RE REQUESTING SOMEONE TO DO A PC TO MAC TRANSFER FOR YOU THIS IS NOT THE PROPER THREAD AND THE MODERATOR WILL BE ASKED TO MOVE/REMOVE YOUR POST
Moderator Action: As indicated in the opening post of the thread, the "Solutions" thread is for proven solutions only.

Ok. Well thanks Alan. I've put myself in contact with the creator of the mod. If he can give me a list of the files or some advice I might be able to piece it together. If not, I'll just have to settle with the other LOTR scenarios. cheers
