Hi i'm new to the forum but i had to make an account for the following reason (and because i wanted to :p).

In Civ Beyond Earth there are "only" 8 factions and that got me thinking:
In the latest screenshots i calculated that he was playing on the Civ V
Tiny map size (56 x 36) (4 players).

Normally u can play on a map with 8 players: Standard: (80 x 52) (8 players).

The problem is that, that's way to small for me (i play with my mates on huge) and i can't find any comformation that there are bigger map sizes then "Standard"...

I can't enjoy being on an alien planet fighting the local wildlife and exploring if i find out that i'm only 8 tiles away from a competitor...

I suspect the same thing. It makes no sense to have a huge map if there aren't enough factions to fill it.

There might not be super super huge maps but there could still be maps larger than standard. It would give players much more room to expand and allow for each faction to grow to a large empire before bumping into neighbors. This would allow for more epic games where large empires fight each other. So, I see no reason why CivBE would not have large maps just because there are only 8 factions.

Well, in Civ games before V it was not unusual to have more than four, five or even six (!) cities. Larger maps = more room to expand.

I've been thinking the same thing, however I'm not sure it will actually be a problem. With the way cities seem to work in BE, taking lots of time to set up, I think empires will be a lot smaller.

Another thought, because of the (what I'm assuming will be ) small empires, maybe a map size that has 4 players in civ 5 would have 6 or 8 in BE?

Fear not--there's a precedent.

In SM's Alpha Centauri there were only a very limited number of factions--but they had all sizes of maps, from Small to Huge. And on Huge you could build TONS of cities without seeing a soul. So fear not--I'm sure they'll have huge maps, just as they have for every other game in the franchise.

Pretty much. Why on Earth or Planet would CivBE break the series' tradition and enforce an upper limit on map size according to the number of factions? In all other Civs, you could have two civs duking it out on a Huge map, if you so desired. I don't see any indication of things changing in CivBE. This is just alarmism.

I think you're jumping to a conclusion here, the fact that standard is the recommended map size for 8 players in civ 5 doesn't mean there are no larger map sizes. Nothing was mentioned about it probably because everyone is taking it for granted (including hopefully the devs) that at least all map sizes from civ 5 are included.
As Sprenk said in the original Alpha Centaury as well as Civ 2 there was a hardcoded limit of 7 players but still all kinds of map sizes. They only started assigning recommended numbers of players to map sizes in later installments when the engine allowed for more players, but it doesn't mean that map sizes are limited by the number of factions.

I don't see anything against bigger maps. From the things we know about CBE, it doesn't seem to benefit tall empires as much as Civ 5, so I wouldn't be surprised if they give more space for players to settle.

As long as the map sizes from Civ V are in Civ Beyond Earth then there is no problem for me :). Just raised this point because i didn't found it anywhere and me and my friends where freaking out about it (i usually go "small", 5 cities early and mid game and late game i go sprawling with about 10 - 12 cities max. My friends like to go sprawling early on and found 10 cities mid game and about 20 cities late game).

Thanks for clearing this up and hopefully Civ Beyond Earth will have Huge maps :)

Don't forget that firaxis made a distinction between BE aliens and typical CIV barbs in that they will pose a challenge (siege worms, krakens and who else knows is lurking in rng)

I already know that from the live stream :), hope they will pose a real threat to my early game expansive buddies :D

I think the problem is more that some people (me!) think that huge maps with just 8 factions are rather boring. That'd be enough room to comfortably put down 10-12 cities without having to worry about good spots getting yanked or angering rivals by expanding into their face. It essentially takes one of the most challenging parts of the early game completely out.

Then I don't think larger-than-standard maps are an issue, as I don't have a problem with multiple versions of the same faction. But that's a personal taste.

I have to mention that the factions are also varied by what they take on landing as well. Even the same sponsor is very unlikely to take the exact same equipment unless they've been programmed to have greater preference for that equipment when it comes time to randomly choose.
