Just wanted to thank you guys for your suggestions - I too was getting the "RunTime error" and after trying AlanH's suggestion of cleaning out the cache, I can now play!
And like alot of solutions for problems in the computer industry, it was the simple thing that worked
I don't see any reason why it should have worked either anyways I meant when you download it it comes in a zipped folder I just unzipped it to the save directory
Hmm! The links I know of are to unzipped raw .Civ4SavedGame files. I'd still be interested to know where you found the one you used.
Leaving it zipped would certainly have made it difficult-to-impossible to play! I wouldn't have thought you could even see it to load it ... unless Civ4 is able to handle zipped files.
I'm just adding in case it helps that I had the same error message described in this thread, but fixed it by uninstalling Civ4 completely and deleting eveyrthing in MyDocs/games/Civ4, then reinstalling the game and patch 1.09. I had the Canada mod installed.
Unfortunately though, my computer crashed suddenly about 20 turns in... It never crashes, so I suspect it had something to do with the game.
Yep I had autosave on, not sure if it was every turn though. I reloaded at the most recent and played through to 600BC, so eveyrthing seems fine now...
For future reference, you can change your autosave setting to once per turn by modifying your civilization4.ini file. The game shoves it into MyDocuments/MyGames/Civilization4: it's the text file. Just scroll down until you find the line for autosaves and change the 4 (for saving every 4 turns) to a 1.
